Great place to get a sandwich for lunch. I am a seafood fan so have had the teriyaki salmon(and when they had it the thai fishcakes) a good few times. Sandwiches are made right in front of you so you can see what is exactly in your sandwich. They also do different soups. Great if the weather is cold Shlurp is well worth checking out.

Tucked away off Brazennose St, Shlurp! isn’t the easiest place to find, or to explain to someone else how to find, when they see what you’ve got for lunch and ask where you got it from. I’ve only tried the sandwiches here — the chilli beef and the salmon ciabattas are very tasty — but they do a wide range of soups and the specials are often strange and adventurous. Also, the speed at which these people can make sandwiches is incredible. It’s like they’re going for personal bests.

Ok set the scene, your fingers are bitterly cold, so much so that the nipping frost has made them go numb. Your doing lots of shivering and your metabolism is going faster, couple this with the vaso constriction in your capillaries to reduce blood flow to the surface of the skin thus heat loss and finally to tip it all off the cold is stimulating your pituary gland to produce ADH resulting in you needing a wee. Then out of the biology lesson and the cold comes shlurp an award winning(apparently) soup kitchen. You go in, have a wee then pick up one of their winter soups, after 5 minutes you realise that you weren’t going to die and feel an affection towards this purveyor of hot beverages. A few times you’ve been here sure it’s good the soups are constantly changing which keeps you guessing however the queues are always ridiculous come lunch time. Bah its good for what it is though and you keep going.

Blimey, how can no one have reviewed Brazenose’s Street infamous SHLURP! yet! Particularly as it serves some of the cheapest and most delicious home made soup in Central Manchester. Shlurp calls itself a «soup bar»(which isn’t the same thing as a soup kitchen. Mainly because there tend to be less homeless people floating around, and you actually have to pay for your food), and boy does this plucky little independent lunch outlet do good soup. From chunky stews topped with wondrously flaky pastry to low fat ‘skinny’ soup, Shlurp’s selection of lunch in a cup is inspiring, bringing together flavours from all around the world and fresh local ingredients. The soups change pretty much every day. and there’s such a wide range on offer that you can go there every day and never eat the same thing twice! They also do a cracking range of sandwiches and salads, all of which are bursting with fresh, tasty ingredients. Even better, you’re usually able to choose from five different types of bread, and a mind bogglingly large list of ingredients, which include everything from Char Sui Pork to Lemon Peppered Mackerel. For the low low price of £4, you can get a sandwich and a cup of soup which you can devour in Lincoln Square whilst watching the world go by. And if that wasn’t enough, did I mention that they also serve porridge? And lip smackingly zingy smoothies? And that the staff will usually serenade you with whichever song is playing on their radio if you give them a tip? So next time you’re wondering where to spend your hard earned lunch money, why not take a trip to Shlurp to have a good old… errr…Shlurp!

What a great name for a place where broths are the order of the day. In some countries, ‘shlurping’ is actually a polite way of showing how much you’re enjoying your liquid lunch. But it’s not just soups that are the stars of the menu at this popular little takeaway situated right in the middle of white collar Manchester. The soups themselves are helpfully categorised into the following: value(cheap and cheerful), skinny(for the diet conscious), veggie(for the herbivores), fish(chowders and the like) and meat, self explanatory really, plus there are seasonal specials. In fact a lot of the menu falls within these categories, such as the stews, casseroles and salads. Fresh fruit is also available to buy, alongside healthy smoothies and little extras like yoghurts, cakes, cookies, cereal bars and crisps. You can also get rolls, warm ciabattas, bagels with spreads and pitas to dunk in your broth. Sandwiches are also standout here. You can get them served on wraps, pitas, ciabattas or long soft wholemeal rolls, and they include the likes of lemon prawns with dill crème fraiche, duck and hoi sin, houmous, tuna, or my favourite — crumbly Lancashire cheese with tomato chutney, celery and carrot. They start at £2.75 a pop so they’re great value too. I love Shlurp. But so do a lot of nearby office suits too, so a tip is to get in early. Remember, those lot usually get off at around 1pm so if you can get there as twelve strikes you should be okay. Oh and if you are one of those office suits… I do apologise. Hey, if you run you might be able to grab that last smoked haddock chowder before your colleague! If not… it’s great for breakfast too, the home-made porridge with brown sugar being a particular delight.

I want to like Shlurp. I really do. They’re an independent company that have survived the recession. They use fresh and seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. All their soups, stews, salad boxes and wraps are made on the premise. They use recycle and biodegradable containers for take-aways. And they offer tasty food for incredibly affordable prices The problem is, whenever I think of going back there I remember the fish and chip soup they served me and I get flashbacks of a tasteless pea soup. Even worse, a tasteless pea soup with an inedible fish finger and potato wedge floating in it!

I love soup on a cold day. It’s just what you need and this place is just the place to go for it. Very centrally located although you’ll never know where it is until you’ve been there, Shlurp is a fantastic hidden gem. Although I adore the soup here, there is so much more to the place including the sandwiches, pitas, wraps, salads, snacks… the list goes on. Definitely a good place to head for lunch, eat in or take away and back to work, bound to get your co-workers jealous!

There’s nothing you can possibly knock about this place. This cheap as chips back street eatery opened by Lucy and Andrew Walker in 2002 to a roaring trade and has never looked back. The concept is very simple — provide quality & fresh soups, stews, casseroles, salads, sandwiches and bagels without any additives or chemicals at rock bottom prices. It’s a no brainer for most of the locals to come here every day for their lunch rather than a sandwich chain where you’ll be queuing for 20 minutes and burning a hole in your pocket before too long. Here you’ll have a generous home-made lunch for somewhere around £3.

I don’t even know them but I already love the people behind Shlurp! Starting your own business takes major balls as you give up the safety net of a guaranteed monthly salary to take on the risk of potentially ending up in the kind of financial trouble that isn’t easily erased. It really is a serious thing– you are basing yours and your family’s future happiness, lifestyle and financial security all on the success of your efforts. So, anybody who is willing to take such life altering risks and bank it all on a place called Shlurp is obviously a complete and utter nutter who has learned to see the comedy in tragedy. Though it’s a shame about the pretty depressing location, Shlurp has enough pep to brighten up the dingiest of Manchester alleyways.
