I’m not massively too sure how much of a brisk trade this place does when smoking seems to be the ultimate sin in 21st century life… But for the 5 mins I was in here it definitely seemed to be busy enough with fans of the old brown weed. Needing to pop in and buy some Havana cigars for our friends wedding, the staff were very helpful, knowledgable and friendly — helping me choose the 3 pack of Bolivar’s(£48 for 3) that went down a treat once all the service and speeches were complete. Personally myself, I have no probs with people choosing what they do with their life and bodies as long as they’re not blowing smoke in mine or my kids face and these sorts of places used to maybe be ten a penny back in the old days, but it’s nice to see something so traditional as a classic, artisan tobacconist on the high street still. When the next big wedding is on, I’ll now know where to go to get my zig-a-zig’ar on!

I rated this 5 stars as I didn’t find anything wrong to consider worth dropping a star to 4. Not being a smoker this is not the kind of place I would go in thinking it might smell of the obvious and not sell much else. However this couldn’t be further from the truth as in the window they have a great display of Swiss army knives, multi tools and what caught my attention were the old 40’s style«safety razors». I went in for a closer look(Aug 30th2011) and its a great little shop, with a surprising amount of stock and the last thing it smells of is tobacco. I bought a beautiful Merkur razor and a pack of 10 blades for £30 which was inline with any prices I could find online, bar £1 or £2. I stood talking to a mid aged gentleman member of staff who was polite, helpful and a very jovial sort of chap. Therefore the staff, the stock and the shop overall has made me a fan and I will use this shop as a regular place for shaving purchases and more in the future. Shops like this are sadly in decline due to supermarkets etc, however you will never get that personal attention, knowledgable staff or pleasant surroundings in a supermarket. A nice little shop for the discerning gentleman. Great.

Ah, tobacco. The ‘evil weed’ as Allen Carr tells me. I’m currently reading his ‘Easyway’, yet here I am extolling the virtues of C. Aston. Well, either you’ll find it useful to know there’s a wonderful specialist tobacconist in town or you detest the thought of coming anywhere near it, but it’s definitely worth a veritable mention in my eyes. C. Aston has most everything you can think of in tobacco terms. A wide selection of rolling tobacco including Bali Shag, Italian pipe tobacco, unusual cigarette brands and of course a great selection of Cuban cigars and cigar accessories like cutters and special cases. At the moment I can appreciate the aroma but hopefully in time to come that won’t be the case. It’s a love-hate relationship.

I don’t smoke. I abhor the smell. But so many of my friends and family do that it is sometimes good to know a decent tobacconist presents wise. A friend of mine has just given up smoking, and is now addicted to lollipops. So much so that he must always have one or two in his coat pocket at all times. Not to encourage such behaviour I have tried to get my father to quit, he managed for ten years once then gave in, but if you can’t beat em you might as well make them happy. Isn’t that the saying? You get the usual here but it is also good for older gentlemen, or in the case of one of my sister’s friends younger girls who think they are Oscar Wilde. Tobacco, cigars, pipes — this is the place if you need these types of, say we say, accessories, in some cases. The staff are everything you would wish them to be and won’t try to convert to their little addiction club.
