When it’s good it’s good, when it’s bad it’s very bad. 5* for the lunch in the indoor/outdoor space out the back. Minus 3* for the cake. Let me explain. We ordered a red velvet cake and a carrot & orange cake to go following lunch. The red velvet cake wasn’t red the whole way through(never seen this before!) and was definitely stale. On the other hand, the carrot & orange cake was fabulous! I’ve been here two or three times now and the service can be a bit patchy but it’s never too long to wait for food. Major bonus points earned for the Presidente Andrea Pirlo burger with sweet potato fries. My boyfriend attests that this was divine!

I think this place is consistently good. They have recently tidied up the back area which is a nice sun trap. On my most recent visit I had a «Mediterranean breakfast» which involved halloumi, figs, walnuts, olives etc and was really tasty and alright value at £8.50. If you don’t like the look of anything on the menu(unlikely but possible) they will make up a sandwich for you no problem.

They make a nice flat white and serve some fresh-tasting, good-looking breakfast food. I had the gluten-free breakfast, and was happy with all but the funky veggie sausage that tasted like Thanksgiving stuffing(if that comparison works for most of you). Gluten-free is not synonymous with meat-free, however I realize that many sausages contain bread product of some kind. Anyway, if the weather happens to continue as it has been, then a stop at the Parlour for a nibble in the back garden is definitely in order! *Order at counter and then go choose your seat.

Just discovered this and as a café expert I would like to say it ain’t bad. Nice coffee and a very perky little cake — fruit and walnut. A good size slab you get too.

First of all, what a stunning green exterior this place has. I know other aspects of the place need exploring, and may seem more important, but you have to admit it is a beautiful shade of green. Now that’s out of the way, I have to say that the rest of the place is pretty damn fine, notably the cosy interior. The snug feeling can be attributed to its raw brickwork and quaint decoration. As with most good cafes, a decent selection of good quality sandwiches are on offer for a reasonable price. There is also free WiFi for customers. There is always a risk in opening a café in a highly populated café strip, but I get the feeling this little place will be just fine.

This café is fine. That’s really all there is to say about it. Next to all the other deli’s, bar’s, brasserie’s and tea rooms in Stoke Newington it just doesn’t do enough to stand out. The selection of drinks and sandwiches is roughly what you’d expect although I will say that they do cater very well for those with wheat and gluten intolerance’s. I’ve been in a couple of times to use the free Wi-Fi(a bonus for any café) and found the staff to be quite grumpy whenever I’ve asked for the network key. Also, when I tried there gluten free apple shortbread I concluded that the gluten must be a pretty vital ingredient as it was horribly dry and tasteless. Having said that, my freshly squeezed apple juice was very nice and I bet the outdoor area would be lovely in the height of summer. All things considered I will end this review of in true school teacher style and say to The Parlour, ‘Must try harder.’

When this café opened I did think that maybe the last thing this stretch of Church Street needed was ANOTHER tea room and to an extent I still think this is true when the competition is a strong as it is here. However, The Parlour is a perfectly nice, well-decorated café with a lovely garden serving tasty food. If you are wheat or gluten intolerant then this place is a godsend as they serve many wheat-free goodies that still taste great. The staff are also very friendly and welcoming, even 20 minutes before closing they were happy for me to sit and have tea while they packed up around me.

The newest addition to the long line of café’s on Stoke Newington Church Street would have gotten four stars, had it not been for my flatmate reporting the sighting of a mouse on the outdoor premises. It was outside in the courtyard, so I risked going to the café one day, and was pleasantly surprised at its chic interior, with good music. They mostly serve salads and sandwiches, and have a large number of takeaways attesting to the quality of food. The sandwiches are in the usual range of deli items, remarkable for the resonable 2.50÷3.00 takeaway or eat in prices. I had a salmon sandwich on toasted rye bread as well as a latte for a fiver. No rodents of any kind were spotted, and I think the café is safe to eat in. Or if you’re very squeamish, make your own sandwich for a takeaway in the park. I think you might miss out though on the warm homely interiors, with bright colors and leafy plants, that give the impression of being in the parlor of a friend’s house.
