Okay, for starters this place is now called Dawat. Service was beyond atrocious. It took 5mins for the waiter to show us to a table. Then after ordering, it took about 30mins for our drinks to arrive and then another 40mins for our food to arrive, so don’t go here if you’re in a hurry. I should also point out that the restaurant wasn’t that busy. There were 3 other tables when we were there. The food itself was average. I had the tandoori chicken, which was not bad(it wasn’t too spicy, which is good) but cooked inconsistently. The outside was charred, but parts on the inside were undercooked(not by a whole lot, but you could tell). Co-workers also ordered Naan bread, which was soggy. When the check came, we asked to split it, the waiter reacted like we just asked him to write a novel on the spot and got a calculator and started getting very sweaty. In the end we managed, but still. Won’t be coming back here, I’m sure there’s plenty of places in London that have way better Indian food.

We went to Kasturi in Aldgate once and were very pleasantly surprised. We found the food a bit different, not the same as the usual or overly greasy, like in some Indian restaurants, and the service was brilliant and polite. We were also offered discounts on future visits. I had the Royal Thali and really enjoyed it. The place is also modern and nicely decorated and prices are reasonable. I’d recommend trying it out.

The food was okay but the service we received really let this place down, my compliments to the chef because the food was fantastic. My partner ordered a glass of coke and when it came out it was flat so we asked for a replacement glass, when the second glass came out hat was also flat. When I told the guy serving us he told me I was wrong and went to the bar to demonstrate he was pouring the coke from a bottle, after he poured it I told him to try it. He did and didn’t say anything afterwards. I won’t be returning.

Apart from the plain and unadorned décor and not over-generous seating, this place shines in this part of the City and has long been a favourite for north Indian food. The cooking is absolutely delicious — rich but not heavy or greasy, and served in abundance. They make a superlative tarka dal — the lighter of the dals — which to me is the key test of an north Indian meal. The mixed kebabs — kebab ke karishma — makes a perfect starter, to be followed by the vegetable biryani and superlative Dum-cooked lamb shanks(koh e avadh) [find out about Dum cooking — it’s an amazing story]. The rice and vegetables are naturally perfect and there’s a reasonable wine list with an excellent Rijoja.

We were full of great expections going into the Kasturi. Its in the Cobra Good Curry Guide and they call it Best in London. I was there with my son, who is chef himself, and we were most terribly disappointed. Both our starters were disgusting. My shaami kebab(two lukewarm meat(?) balls) had no taste at all and felt like rubber. Also the inside looked very unnatural. I never had anything so unnatural in an Indian restaurant before. My sons sheek kebab looked most peculiar with big longish almost white bits in it. Also this one had hardly any taste. When the waiter cleared the table(because we had hardly touched those UFOs), we had a discussion about it. They simply thought it was good. Then came the mains and the chief waiter mentioned to be sorry about the starters. My sons lamb dish — a speciality of the house — with lots of onions looked very dark brown — and as my son put it — was just saved from the stove 10 seconds before burning or going black.(I would have thrown it away.) My dish was quite boring but without a great fault. In the end the manager came, appologized again and said we would get one extra dish next time. I was to worn out to make a comment. I guess there will be no next time !! Whenever I pass by there I remember those artificial rubber balls with disgust. — Best rubber ball maker in London!
