Sadly this pub is no more :-(A few months back you could be guaranteed a half decent pint and some friendly conversation in a true South East London boozer but now this pub is closed and due for demolition.

My first visit to the Clipper was around 6 years ago when I first moved to the area and I vaguely remember that I quite enjoyed the food. So a couple of weeks ago, fancying some Sunday brunch/lunch and finding the Blacksmith Arms had a problem with the oven(albeit, the owner was cooking Sunday roast in their house and bringing it into the pub! Dedication for you…), we went to the Clipper. I have to say, I was quite disappointed with the food. We both had a Sunday beef roast and on arrival, it smelled and looked delicious. After that, it was a bit downhill — the vegetables were either frozen or boiled until they didn’t taste of anything. The Yorkshire pudding and the roast potatoes were nice, but we suspect also frozen. The beef was OK. There was nothing to write home about. That said, it is a really nice, friendly pub — it has a great community feeling about it. But I probably won’t be back in a hurry for food, which is normally the only reason I go into a pub.

Located not far from where I moved recently and in vicinity of the Hilton Docklands. The atmosphere is what you would expect form an English pub and so is the menu with pub favourites, such as bangers and mash, burgers or steak and ale pie. They got Stella, London Pride, Guinness and Flowers on tap. There is a restaurant area that is only separated by a sign but blends into the bar area. The staff is friendly and direct. The toilets are clean with enough toilet paper, hand dryer and a condom vending machine. All in all, The Clipper is a fairly average London pub, nothing special but my steak and ale pie was what I expected and satisfied my craving for pub food.

I just had to Unilocal about my favourite pub in all of England(Scotland, you are another matter!) Just another pub really, but what I groove on is the location – residential and quiet, and right by the river. It’s about a 10 – 15 minute bus ride from Salter Road/Rotherhithe St to the nearest tube(Canada Water – Surrey Quays is closed for the time-being) or the nearest shopping experience(a Tesco’s). Totally worth finding if you want to leave the congestion of central London and hang out in a non-tourist and non-diesel fumed atmosphere. The Unilocal survey asks«Best Nights?» and I used to go there every day. Which shocked one of the marketing-survey people hanging out there when I told her where I was from. No matter, it’s still a place I look forward to coming back to visit.
