The Angel

This is a proper London pub. Good priced beer, but you can walk straight past it if you don’t know it here. If you want a quieter time, go around through the beer garden at the back to enter the ‘darts area. Nice, secluded and out of the sun on a hot day.

I call this a bit of a «Sneaky Pete» location. I missed it the first time, and sometimes I still miss it. Maybe that’s why I like it. Easy to get to from Tottenham Court Road station, and while it can be busy, it doesn’t get rammed.
There are different entrances as there are two parts to this pub.
For the side with big booths (and the one with darts), ignore the door that says «go around the corner to enter» telling to go to the right. Open the door on the LEFT of it. I find it’s less busy over there. But be careful, if you are meeting someone, they will probably go to the signed side where you will not be able to see them. Both sides connect with the small garden (concrete) garden out back.
It’s a Sam Smith’s pub, so you know you can’t go wrong (vegan beers and snacks). Strawberry beer, please!

Perfectly decent Sam Smiths pub in a busy area — we were a bit confused by the multi door entry system, and I’m still not sure we found all of the pub. But we ended up in the darts room and found ourselves a corner for a chat and some beer. I’m no stranger to SS beers, and these were good as always.
Real mix of people in there. We were the only ‘suits’ to be found — quite a few people having themselves a solitary pint.
The atmosphere was reserved and relaxed. Nothing crazy, just a nicely decorated room that has a bar in it.
An ideal retreat when in the area.

Nice enough place, this pub is one of the Samuel Smith owned places, so only Sam Smith ales and lagers on sale. The bitter is on hand pump, but I think they had a sparkler on the tap as it was very frothy and took a while to settle. It has different bars, the main one i think was the lounge bar, it has a coal fire, which was very welcoming. A saloon bar, which wasn’t very big but had comfortable seating and a public bar, I think that was what it was as it had a dart board and games machine. There was also another area, which seemed like am inside outside area, it had garden tables and chairs, it may have been just a storage area, anyway you have to go through in the is area to get to the saloon bar, which is where the toilets are. The décor is the usual dark wood type, this time it had gold wallpaper above. friendly enough place.

The Angel always brings back memories of Trash. And that can only ever be good. (Apart from the time Erol was rude to me, forever burnt into my vengeful brain)
I personally really like it as it is very english with warrens and tons of «hidden spaces». I love the way the «Darts pub» is separated from the «normal» pub. I love the way I didn’t realise the Darts side existed for ages.
The only thing is I don’t like Sam Smith beers so I normally go for organic cider or their version of appltizer.
Tonight I found out the other thing is they don’t really give a damn about this pub, telling a fellow Unilocaler her beer is from the bottom of the barrel, it’s not fresh nor very good (and refusing to change it).
Usually this will piss me off but somehow it just adds to the vaguely weird charms of The Angel. Sort of like being in Shoreditch but in town. Perfect.

It’s a damn shame that this place got so popular because it has had to sacrifice a bit of what made it so awesome. Back when this was relatively unknown and never as crowded, it was the «joint local» for my very close-​knit group of friends because it was centrally located and reliably awesome. Now that other people have discovered its awesomeness, it is completely shoulder-​to-​shoulder by 5:45pm most nights of the week. Since the beer garden closes at 5:15pm, I spend most of my time out on the pavement chain-​smoking to avoid the crowds.
The menu, as stated by a previous poster, used to be quirky and fun but is now completely bland. Our quiet, no-​frills, little old-​man pub now serves risotto. Feels a bit like a sell-​out move to me.
The Angel is still the typical pub of choice for my group of friends because it is cheap, familiar, and in an absolutely ideal location for meeting up after work. It has been a victim of its own success in a way, because even reliable old regulars like us are losing patience with the crowds and occasionally looking elsewhere. If we could kick 50% of the patrons out and have the place a bit more chill, this would be a 4-​star review fo’ sho’.

To be frank, many of the pubs around this area are rubbish. So the Angel stands out. A Samuel Smith pub (guaranteeing a decent, cheap pint), it is also Tardis-​like in its hidden extra rooms.
There is one issue. This pub used to have an imaginative food menu. In here you could get excellent nachos (ie not a few crisps with a sprinkling of cheese on the top). You could also get all kinds of oddball combinations of things like potato fritters, chips, etc. For some reason, this eccentric menu was thrown out and replaced by an über-​bland one. Shame.

I liked this pub because it was a Samuel Smith’s and had a bit of character to it. It’s small, cosy or cramped depending on your personality, and had an interesting mix of people.
I’m a designer, so the typography on the window bugged me but I realise that won’t be an issue for most. ;)
This pub has charm and good beer at good prices and that goes a long ways.

We took over the snug for an informal leaving do, and I must admit, for an old man’s boozer this place has a certain charm. Like the sister pub just up the road — the Princess Louise — it’s a bit of a maze with different sections and areas to disappear into (just don’t try and move the chairs around, they seem to get rather angry about that). It’s cosy and considering the location, quite a well-​kept secret.
Sam Smith’s are cheap and the beer drinkers seem to love what’s on offer. The organic cider is good and I love the lack of branding — get ready for Ye Olde Coke mixers with your vodka.

The Angel is a wonderful old Victorian style pub, including tiles, with a tiny bar which looks original. Down the side is a seating area that has huge doors probably from the days of coaches. It can be a bit cool in the side bit which can be good as the bar is usually packed solid. Great location and friendly atmosphere. Undiscovered mainly by tourists who would love the original features of the place.
Lots of actors and musicians use it. It is close to The Astoria and near the Intrepid Fox too.
The do pub meals including veggie and the beer is good and pretty cheap for London.
It is between Covent Garden and Tottenham Court Rd so a good meet up pub.
It has a beer garden but it closes around 5pm maybe due to noise. It has a dartboard but never seen enough room to play. getting served can be slow due to being so busy.
I recommend it as a cheap and nice place to go.

This pub is brilliant. It’s simple and friendly and a great place to meet friends when no one is really sure where to go.
It’s split into two halves with a little snug at the back which no one knows about, the part with the smaller bar section is a bit more of a old man’s pub. The other half seems to be a bit cooler with more indie kids after they’ve finished playing with guitars on Denmark Street.
As the other guys have stated, it’s a Sam Smiths pub, which people either seem to really love or hate. I’m a fan. Two quid for a pint of beer is pretty good in my book. It’s nice beer too.
The general atmosphere is pretty good. The old locals can get a bit annoyed if the young kids hop over onto ‘their side’ but it’s fun in here. They also do a pretty good lamb hotpot.
If you want a cheap night out in a friendly relaxed pub, you’ll have a great time in here. Just make sure you stay ou of the snug at the back. Unless you want to buy me a beer of course.

The Angel is a great pub to relax and have a few cheap beers in. The amazing Alpine Lager is £1.99 a pint and the pub is cozy and homely, nice for a central London drinking spot. There’s also a garden open on nice days during the day but sadly it closes at night. It seems to be a hit with the rock-​music loving folk around the area, it’s as good for a few drinks before going to the nearby Astoria or Astoria 2 as it is for kicking back for the evening with a few mates.

Another Samuel Smith’s and another great location for one too being just off Tottenham Court Road and tucked in a bit… so it tendsnot to be too busy.
As usual for S. Smith’s the pints are cheap, it has an «old man pub» sort of feel and with the typical furnishings of that sort of thing, there’s also a strange area which I suppose is a converted stable /​coach house… either that or I’m a medium for dead horses…
Probably my favourite of the Samuel Smith’s.
