Nothing special and basically a chicken and chips place with proper chips rather than reprocessed ones. You have to pay for sauce. The chicken is fine but has always been sat around for a while. Prices, as you would expect, are cheap but there are better versions of this place around.

YUM! By far my favourite chips in London and I can almost never say no to this place. Unfortunately they charge ketchup and mayo by the packet. :(

Nom nom nom nom nom, Lizzie and fish cakes sitting in a tree, K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Having lived in this area for a while and never actually having been here was nice for a ate evening to pop in and get some lazy take out. Firstly, it’s pretty good value for money, and secondly, their chips are top notch. If it’s ‘paradise’, well, I’ll leave that up to you, but their fish cake was really quite tasty. I love the fact that this place has such high ceilings too. It means that by the time you leave with your take out order, you don’t actually smell of fat or grease. They also serve up mushy peas which were pretty damn good as well as tartar sauce, although this is served up on those stupid packets for 20p each.

Used to be a favourite ‘just off the bus’ favourite, but I think it has changed hands and it has changed a bit. The last time I went in they wouldn’t serve me a half portion of chips(I didn’t want a whole one) which might be a small thing, but I was a bit put out.

This is the best fish and chip shop I know in London. The fish is generally cooked to perfection(if you ask for plaice or skate, the lovely owners will cook it especially for you — and boy is it good) and chips are proper, not greasy in the slightest. Everything’s kept great and fresh by the heavy footfall through the place each evening. And the best thing of all? It’s at the bottom of my street :)

This place is my local chippy. Since Evelyn’s last post the place has changed hands and had a bit of a makeover. The new owners have invested in different oil, which certainly has made the chips(and fried fish) much more crispy. The first time I went back over after they changed hands, I had a bag of chips, which I ate ALL of… including the crispy bits, which I’m not a great fan of. Some of the prices have gone up a bit(chips are now £1.20 from £1), but you can get fish & chips from £4.50, which is pretty good for this day and age. I have to confess that I’m in there once a week now, so trust me, you will give it a go, and I’m also sure you’ll love it too. Alan

This is my local chippy and it’s good enough, although calling itself ‘Paradise’ is a bit of an exaggeration, it is still a chip shop after all. The shop itself always seems to be busy which is great because it means you don’t get stuck with a piece of fish that has been resting under a heat lamp all day and your chips are still nice and crispy, not soggy with grease. Personally I’m not a fan of battered fish with its skin still on though because it never seems to crisp up nicely, it just gets a bit soggy. This is not a phenomena unique to the Paradise Fish Bar though so I do have to forgive it. Paradise is obviously very popular with a lot of the locals and school kids. On your walk up to Newington Green its rare not to see at least a few people holding bags of chips soaked in salt and vinegar. The service is always quick and friendly and the prices very reasonable. Paradise also makes a very welcome break from all the fried chicken chains which seem to dominate the area. I’d take fish, chips and mushy peas over greasy fried chicken and limp straw fries any day of the week.
