I’m not a sushi snob, so Mugen is perfect for me since I can buy sushi and other Japanese lunch items at good prices. For my tastes, the quality is excellent(especially for the price). I would recommend going early to get the chicken katsu curry, since they never seem to have any left when I visit(admittedly this is usually after 2pm). It’s pretty tasty when they do have it.

So much better quality than the likes of Wasabi– but at the same price! Good range of sushi and bento, hot food, soup, and steamed buns/dim sum. Has a very loyal following with many people in the area.

One of the nicer lunch spots in Farringdon, it’s pretty much takeaway only though. I’ve had the chicken katsu and chicken karaage curries before, both are delicious and cost £5.60, not the cheapest lunch in town, but a lot more reasonable than Wagamama. The portions are perfectly sized and they give you chop sticks and a spoon, which is nice.

Popped in for lunch today as I work round the corner, there is quite a lot of Japanese options in the area atm but most of them are chains. Picked up a decent sized box of sushi for under £5 all pre-prepared but the fish tasted fresh. Ok, it’s not the best I’ve ever had but a combination of convenience, cost and taste makes it a good option if your in the area. They also have a selection of hot food along with some buns that all look worth trying. Better for a take away option as seating is limited to a small area outside.

Good food for good price. Try the pork buns!

Not a sushi destination, but if you live or work in the area, it’ll do. Not a ton of variety, and the rolls have a lot of rice, but it’s tasty enough, the fish is fresh, and the people are friendly. The space is tiny, and with the lunch crowd, there’s something about the atmosphere that makes you forget to get your change! I thought it was just me, then I saw it happen to someone else who had to be shouted back for her 50p.

Finally got around to reviewing Mugen hah. I lived in London in March 2012, Mugen was the reasonably priced way to meet my Asian food hankerings in the expensive city called London. Go after 5pm, get some great 50% off food(it’s a real deal at that point). Most everything I tried was tasty at Mugen. Not great for groups, I would recommend take out.

I love finding places like this in London. It isn’t the best sushi in town but I still like it. The obvious key ingredient to sushi is of course the fish… but also it is the rice. I think there is a little too much rice in the california rolls but man is it good! The rice has to be moist and sticky with the right combo of vinegar, sugar and salt. The steamed buns were okay. I’ll definitely be back for the katsu curry next time.

Decent sushi choice, but not enough of it. I don’t think I got a particularly small pack but apparently my selection wasn’t enough for me, perhaps next time I’ll grabs so miso with it. I haven’t tried the Katsu curry but I hear it’s one to try, so I’ll be back!

I haven’t been here for a while, as I left the country a year ago, but I have not found a single place in California that can compare to the Chicken Katsu curry in this place… It’s the best EVER, it smells soooo good and it has an effect that i’ve never seen with any other food, as soon as you open the pot, everyone in your office will go and get the same thing — it’s THAT good. I haven’t tried anything else there, but it deserves 5 stars for that dish alone.

So what you save in money here, you miss out on in quality. Not the worst by any means but when I worked in Covent Gdn I was spoilt for choice for really fresh and exciting sushi. This stuff was pretty run of the mill. Tuna and salmon but not too much else. Stodgy rice too which is always a shame. Not moaning on the price, you get what you pay for mostly dont ya. And the miso worked. But compare that to something like Tobiko on Garrick St and I’m more than happy to pay the pound or so extra for infinately better and more imaginative sushi.

When I was a grad student, and feeling tired/depressed/celebratory/didn’t want to cook/etc, I would head one of two places – this take out was one of them. When I’d pass by here in the morning, I would watch them preparing the sushi fresh each day. How did I know i was fresh each day? Because at 5 pm, they knock everything to half price to get rid of it fast. I had many cheap sushi feasts on my student budget thanks to this place, and I remember it fondly. The sushi is surprisingly fresh – I mean, compared to Yo! Sushi down the street, it’s positively gourmet. I miss this place. Mugen, I’m coming for you, honey!

A decent sushi and Japanese food take-away place moments from Farringdon station. Unlike most other Clerkenwell«sushi» places,(Abodako and Yo! Suhi, I’m looking at you), Mugen offers mostly authentic sushi. The salmon avocado roll was good, and the selection of fish looked to be fresh. There are also a selection of steamed buns and soups to buy. Quality is above what I expected for packaged sushi, but then again so are the prices. This is not a place to dine-in, so expect to take your sushi on the go.

A solid choice for simple sushi and other Japanese delights like katsu curry and bottled Ito En green tea. Even better after 17:00 when everything still left in the shop is 50% off. Which is perfect if you’re headed home and unlikely to start cooking once you arrive.

Mugen is a tiny delight only a wasabi pea’s throw from Farringdon station. While their menu is as limited as you would imagine from a quick take-away sushi stop, the quality is surprisingly fresh and the selection robust. You’ll find everything from sashimi platters, nigiri, hand rolls, inside out roles, edamame, and even a small hot selection with teriyaki, curry and steamed buns. Unlike its literal Japanese translation of ‘no limit,’ unfortunately Mugen does have a limit for me — it seems a wee bit too expensive for pre-made sushi in my book. But you can trust that I will be back again and again, wallet be damned.

Steamed pork buns, sitting in the window, waiting for me. Yes, yes I’d like one please. £1.50, mmmm.

I concur with the other reviewer. It’s a solid little lunch place with inexpensive and tasty sushi, rolls, katsu curry, noodles, etc. Right near Farringdon station. Much more reasonable option than the Yo! or Itsus of the world.

A nice little Japanese takeaway lunch place in an excellent location — near lots of offices and Farringdon Tube station. Specializing in Sushi, with a wide selection for adventurous sushi masters to basic creations for the sushi virgin. Note however, there is only one vegetarian option. Also on offer are rolls, rice cakes, deserts, bento(meat only), curry and a selection of Asian soft drinks — Green Tea, Pocari Sweat etc. They also have a few chocolates and sweets imported from Japan which can be quite hard to find; they are also priced quite well. Worth a visit if you are after Sushi or a Japanese lunch in the area and don’t want to spend a lot.
