This is one of the worst places I have been in London. On a recommendation of a colleague, a group of us went after work for dinner. The location is in a horrible part of Camberwell, the hotel resembles a brothel and the food was pretty awful. I had a lamb dish, pretty standard for this type of restaurant, and it was chewy and tasteless. Other people ordered some traditional dishes and also fish. It was all appalling. They also struggled with our group size(15) and told us we’d have to wait an hour despite us booking in advance and only two other tables being occupied. It’s hilarious to think about now, but at the time we were gutted to be paying to eat somewhere like this. Funny manikins and a fish pond in the dining area did make us laugh though.

Wonderful place. I liked the enormous decorations on the walls and I felt cozy and welcomed. The food was delicious and there were lots of people eating around which also speaks for the high quality of the meals and service.

I recently had a surge of interest in Silk Road/Central Asian history — so what better way to explore it than coming to this restaurant? I will preface my review with the fact that this is hands down, the most random yet memorable London restaurant experience I have ever had. This restaurant is in the back of the rather non-descript Pasha Hotel, which also seems to have a spa/hammam. You have to walk through a long, dark hallway, past several hotel rooms, posters of Kazakh scenery and Kazakh women, and two mannequins wearing traditional Kazakh costumes. The restaurant is unmarked except for a non-descript open door. Inside the restaurant, there is a little pond, and a small bridge. Tables for large groups are cross legged or are on tiny stools with very little room for your legs, and you have to hunch over your table for most of the night. You are, however, ensconced in pillows. There are some sitdown tables, but for some reason there were very few people sitting at them. Food — it was my first time having Kazakh food, and it was a mix of Turkish, Tibetan, Russian, and Greek(not sure how authentic this was.). I ordered the Laghman noodles, which were really tasty! Momos were also on the menu, as well as a series of hummus-y dips and boiled meats(not as tasty.) All entrees were very reasonably priced, at around 7 – 14GBP. To add to that, the added treat was the night time entertainment — a Kazakh singer singing what seemed like Kazakh dance hits, as well as some Besame Mucho. I would gather that this place is perfect for an interesting night out, or a memorable birthday party, although it is slightly out of the way for people who like taking the tube — but well worth it! Side note: for those office workers out there — your knees will kill after sitting for several hours at those tables — stretch it out when you can.
