The attitude of its proprietor leaves a lot to be desired: lots of smirks and sardonic backchat. The food is better than average, however, and fairly reasonable prices.

Never before have I felt compelled to return to a café after getting take away sandwich but then again I have never felt physically sick after seeing what I wad actually eating. I went to Guido’s looking for a traditional Italian snack, I ordered a chicken escalope chibatta during my lunch break with just lettuce(hold the tomatoes). Much to my surprise the person preparing my food was not wearing any protection on hid hand nor a any point did he wash his hands(before or after serving me and handling my money). I got back to my office and found it just didn’t taste ANYTHING like mama used to make and took a peek inside. To my disgust the lettuce was well on it’s way to actually rotting! It must have been one or two days old and I just felt like being sick. I marched back and demanded a refund(which I got very promptly — surprise, surprise). Avoid this place, and if do go make sure they are wearing gloves or at least wash their hands and check your food before you go. Oh, and did I mention they put tomatoes in it?!

I surprisingly like Guidos despite not necessarily having the reasons to back that preference objectively. Good-sized pastas for about 7 pounds, and waitresses that are rather attentive(though they don’t seem to always get along with the chef), it is a good place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. And I especially like their 3-cheese tagliatelle. It seems to still be open at about 6−7pm, though I’ve never been there for dinner. Being just a short walk away from the LSE is probably one reason I’ve been there so many times, but nevertheless, I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a filling and good Italian meal cheaply.

This café serves good value food with a variety of generously sized pasta dishes. The penne with bacon and advocado in a tomato sauce is my favourite. A range of all day breakfasts and a number of other comfort foods like cottage pie and lasagne is also served here, along with sandwiches, paninis and the like. At around £5-£7 for a main dish that will keep you full until dinner this is the place to go to.

Guido’s is a little café perfect for lunch. I usually grab a bowl of pasta– they have good portion sizes. Its not the fanciest place you’ll ever eat but its good food and its pretty cheap. Good for a quick lunch if you’re in the area. The service is decent but if you get there later on close to closing time you might have to work to attract the waitress’ attention.
