I too had the misconception that this shop carried American products. I think every American expat in Liverpool(including me) has been filled with hope and then thoroughly disappointed by this shop. They might have one or two items that originated in the US but you will find these same items in any Asda or Tesco anyway. And what they do sell is just average corner store cheap stuff – similar in quality to Iceland, but not as cheap.

The US Food Store? As in the United States? This line of bungled internal questioning led me to believe I was about to step into a little corner of Yankland, a mini-mart fully stocked with Hershey bars, Lucky Charms, Mountain Dew, Jolly Ranchers and a whole host of other brands you only ever hear about in cable sitcoms. I was wrong. US Food Store Express is a strangely sad place, a bright, sparse arrangement of shelves that will never be able to contend with the nearby Asda, the closer Aldi or even the local newsagents. It feels inexplicably entangled in failure and the only American thing about it is its potential to be robbed.

US food store is effectively a small mini market. I imagine it’s existance is facilitated by people not wanting to cross the road and queue for the basic essentials from Asda, otherwise this mini food market wouldn’t really need to exist. US food store also has the facility to pay bills such as council tax, gas, electiricity, water etc. through the in store paypoint machine — a useful addition. Aside from this it offers the usual mobile top ups, magazines, papers and a larger than normal selection of household goods.
