Happens on the last Sunday of every month, has plenty of choice of local produce, all traders should come from a 100 mile radius, value for money and some stalls have try before you buy, the only thing I find slightly off putting is things like cake and bread are uncovered despite being outside

Not content with being the most bohemian street in Liverpool, Lark Lane now has it’s own farmers market. Held the last Saturday of every month, it’s a small and cosy affair that involves local farmers and artisan producers selling their goods directly to locals. Prices are reasonable and unlike when you buy from a supermarket, you can rest assured that your food has come from within a 30 mile radius rather than being flown or shipped from another country. As for the produce, we’re talking everything from fresh sausages, bacon and pork pies to pastries, bread, cakes, vegetables, fruit, salad and cider. I bought some wonderful bread and tomatoes but alas, I couldn’t find any soft or hard goats cheese to go with it!

On the 4th Sunday of every month the Lark Lane Farmers Market takes place. It is set up at the Aigburth Road end of Lark Lane and curves round onto the paved area of Aigburth Road. There is always an excellent mix of stall here selling produce such as sweets, plants, coffee, cheeses, specialist sausages, specialist meats, beers, smoothies, cakes, black & white pudding and much much more. Many of the stalls have free samples to try and the smell that emits from the market is delicious. The produce on sale is often more expensive than you would find in supermarkets but this is to be expected. The produce is of an excellent quality and you wont find many of the specialist items in supermarkets at all. This is a great addition to the Lark Lane community.

The bohemian chic of Lark Lane, which is littered with bars, eateries and quirky stores selling retro interior accessories. Drinkers mill about with students — presuming there’s a difference between the two — and«dedicated followers of fashion». What a perfect place for a farmers market. This market, held on the last Saturday of every month, is bigger than its counterpart in Woolton Village, although it does suffer slightly in comparison as half of it is on the edge of busy Aigburth road. A great plant stall selling lovely and unusual bushes at very decent prices greets those who enter the market from Lark Lane. The kind of stall Woolton is missing out on. There’s myriad cake and bakery stalls selling pasties, pies, pastries and bread and the ever present Savin Hill Farm meat stall, which sells sausages presumably butchered in Heaven. Last time I went, today(28 August), there was a fantastic flower stall with some of the sunniest sunflower bouquets I’ve ever seen for a mere £3. A very good place to visit every now and again, but it rarely changes, which is a shame.

As if Lark Lane wasn’t varied and alternative enough, here at the busy end of the street over looking Aigburth Rd is where you will find the farmer’s market at the end of the month. On the 4th Sunday of the month to be precise is where all sorts of food producers and farmers or arts and crafts sellers will congregate in a showcase of goods from across the locality.

This is a welcome addition to the very vibrant community that exists around Lark lane. The farmers market provides a lot of foods that even the Tesco Metro or the Home Bargains cannot match across the road(and they are both awful to be honest for food). Of course, in general, the farmers market is where you expect not only a higher quality of food, but also food with a low carbon footprint as it is all grown or sourced locally. Being the eco-minded person that I am, this gives it the advantage already. However, I will now add the fact that I am a vegetarian into the mix and this is where the farmer’s market is still very good for me, but obviously being quite meat orientated isn’t great for me. Obviously, I know I’m in the minority of people so this is only a minor complaint. The only other gripe is that you do have to get there early because a lot of the stock tends to get sold off by the early afternoon — so make it a morning trip if you are a serious shopper. Other than that, this has a great variety of food and seems to be expanding quickly so no doubt the problems I have had will begin to subside somewhat.
