It’s taken me over a year to publish this negative review of my dining experience at La Crêpe Rit. Partially because it’s taken me some time to put my experience in words but it’s mainly due to the photo that I’ve uploaded making me gag every time I look at it. This tiny, Parisian themed café is situated on the Albert Docks in Liverpool and after hearing my best friend describe their pancakes as «the best in Liverpool» I had to go check out this place for myself. I took an old friend there when she came to visit me and ordered the cheese, tomato and egg crêpe but asked to swap the egg for ham whilst my friend opted for steak and chips, which apparently was actually quite edible unlike my meal. The crêpe looked pretty impressive when delivered to my table but was one of the blandest meals I’ve ever eaten in my life with next to no flavour, even with the several toppings I ordered, even adding sauces, salt and pepper to the dish. I haven’t eaten crepes since, I really think it’s put me off the dish for a long time.

This pleasant café on the Albert Docks has a really nice and genuine feel to it. It is amazingly clean. You are welcomed by happy and welcoming staff. The menu offers something for everyone from English breakfast to croissants to traditional crepes. And, the coffees(or the Café Latte) and milk shakes(what my kids loved) are delicious. When strolling along the docks, I definitely recommend La Crêpe for a good meal balanced with a nice atmosphere.

1 seems harsh based on my limited experience with the menu, but 2 would be generous for this uninspired tourist trap. Let’s say 1.5. We went in for a crêpe and coffee, which seemed like a logical combination. The coffee was mouth-wrenchingly terrible, but not cold, which leads me to assume it was the lowest grade instant coffee available(the server said it was filter, which is hard to believe). I drank it because I needed the caffeine, chewed a piece of gum, and hightailed it to Starbucks immediately afterward to kill the taste permanently. The service was prompt and friendly-ish. No complaints on this score. The crêpe was nothing special. A little doughy perhaps, but it’s hard to go wrong with icing sugar and maple syrup. The restaurant smelled like grease and vinegar, so not your typical creperie! Their burgers use processed cheese, which I find very unappetizing, but maybe their fish and chips are a saving grace? Not recommended, unless self-torture with horrible coffee is your thing.

WOW, I didn’t think you could screw up a crêpe. This place is awful. There were only about 6 people, at 3 tables, in the whole place, and yet, it took forever for anyone to come to the table. Then we ordered, and even though the guy who makes the crepes is out in front, and visible, and we saw that he was texting on his phone the whole time, it was only after 10 minutes that the guy even started to cook our food. We know this because when the guy WAS finally ready to cook our food, after his texting, the waiter had to come back to the table to ask us again what we wanted in our crepes! Bizarre. It was so bad, it was like a weird dream. And then when the crepes came, they were very dry and tasted like styrofoam. I was in Paris for a week before going to the UK, so yes, I had some good crepes. But honestly, it’s just a pancake. It’s not rocket science. You can go to any street vendor in most cities and get one that is halfway decent. This was barely edible. It was like chewing on cardboard. We both ended up pouring salt onto them in a vain attempt to give them some flavor. We should have just gotten a pastry and a coffee at the café at the Tate Museum.

Well cooked food that arrived quickly. Check out the specials board for great value meals. Something for everyone here including pasta, burgers and baked potatoes. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food while we were there. Not a big place, but the quick service made this a nice place for a quick pit-stop, before heading off to do some shopping.

La crêpe Rit is a French bistro within the docks area which attempts to provide authentic French cuisine to the good people of Liverpool. The place looks very classy indeed from the outside and as though it is the kind of place a formal dinner should be had or something for a special occasion. The place proclaims a lot of itself which I suppose is a typical sign of French arrogance which is not a bad thing at all as long as you deliver on the bold promises that are being made. The problem here is that I do not believe this place does deliver to the level it could do. I have eaten at many French restaurants and recently returned from a few days in the wonderful city of Paris and unfortunately this place does not quite measure up. In fact I believe places such as Bistro Franc and Café rouge which are slightly less central and expensive both offer a closer experience to that of France itself. This place promises much but unfortunately delivers little.

La Crêpe Rit is situated along the Albert Docks and is a French style café. La Crêpe Rit offers diners an authentic French Bistro dining experience. The menu is packed full of dishes. My favourite is of course the pancakes! The service was quick and very friendly. I also really enjoyed the view. It’s not a place that I stay at for long, but rather eat and move onto the bars surrounding the café.
