Waited over an hour for our delivery. When we finally go it they’d sent some of the wrong items. We used to order from Sakura a lot but it seems to be getting worse every single time we order.

I’m not sure if the chefs have changed, but I tried Sakura again for some Chinese food this time, and I’m sad to say it wasn’t as good as I remembered. I went for salt and pepper chicken wings, special curry, and special fried rice, and it wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. The food arrived in good time, as stated, and delivery was pleasant. The portion sizes are certainly in line with others I’ve experienced, as far as the curry and rice was concerned — one portion can last me for two days as I halve them both in general. I’m certainly greedy at times, but there’s no way I could eat all that grub in one sitting! The food had plenty to it, with generous amounts of meat and such, but there was something in the sauce that didn’t agree with my tastes. The curry was almost a little sweet or liquorice-y, which I wasn’t keen on. The other part was the coating/batter on the salt and pepper chicken wings. I’m sure this was the first place I tried those, and loved them — the batter used to be light, flavoursome, crispy, and spicy. Not this time, sadly. It was thick and a bit stodgy, and tasted like frozen pre-battered wings that you might purchase whole sale, rather than light and freshly made. It’s a real shame, as I was so looking forward to them! They weren’t particularly spicy either. However, I suppose one boon is that you get about eight or nine wings for £3.80. Perfect if you happen to enjoy them that way. So, the food was fine, but just not as good as it used to be. Of course, everyone has different tastes, so it may be somewhere that suits others. Sadly though, it’s not for me.

We heard so many good things about this place, so we ordered a takeaway for the 2 of us on a saturday night around 7pm. It took over 2 ½ hrs to arrive! By which time it was cold and we were ready to go to bed(we’ve just had a baby so not so many wild nights staying up past 10pm for us at the moment!). Also, there wasnt much sauce with the meals, very dry. We wont be ordering from them again. Although they did say when calling they were busy, we didnt quite expect to have to to wait so long for some cold food. Maybe if you picked it up yourself it would be better? We would have cancelled the order or refused to pay but we paid on the phone when ordering.

This Cantonese take away is a personal favourite of. Personally this is due to a particular dish that I LOVE — mixed vegetables with black bean and garlic sauce(137). Absolutely gorgeous with egg fried rice or I imagine any noodle or rice-related accompaniment! I can also highly recommend the fried bean curd with sweet and sour sauce(142) and the fried bean curd with aubergine in spicy sauce(143). Another favourite is the salt and pepper chips(‘a Sakura invention!’) which are affordably priced at £1.70 and can be found on their website under ‘sides’ which is strangely found in the ‘mains’ section! They are an interesting take on standard chips and very tasty! Not for those who are very sensitive to spicy food but not excessively hot at all. I did have one not quite as tasty experience though when I decided to ‘branch out’ and ordered the 139a vegetarian Singapore style chow mein. It may have just been a one off but the sauce didn’t seem to have been mixed in properly and the flavour was rather uneven… though I suspect most of this negativity was due to my regret at not having order my faithful 137! They deliver to Headingley, Hyde Park, Burley, Kirkstall, Armley, West Park, Adel and Meanwood for order of £6.00 or over and Horsforth, Holt Park, Moortown and the city centre for orders of £20.00 or over. They take cards which you can use to pay over the phone if ordering a delivery — they take a quick look at your card when the delivery arrives. Their website is adorably designed and tells you more about Sakura’s history and cooking in the ‘about’ section.

Sakura is probably the best Chinese takeaway in Headingley — not bad, considering it specialises in Cantonese, rather than Chinese, cuisine. Everyone’s experienced Chinese takeaways that are rather grubby inside(go a few doors up to Star Chef and you’ll see what I mean. While you wait for your Sakura, however, you notice that the interior of this place is ever-so slightly more classy and clean that most Chinese takeaways. More importantly, the food is top drawer. These guys pull off standard Chinese dishes with style but also show you what real Cantonese food tastes like. The crispy beef in OK sauce is the best example of this, but I’m confident that whatever you order from here(they deliver too) will not let you down.

Very fast delivery, with a loyalty scheme(spend over £15 and get a voucher — redeem 5 vouchers for a free meal under £5). We couldn’t find a menu the other night so drove down instead, which was good because they lady gave me two baby spider plants for free(I like spider plants and she saw me looking at hers). We ordered — salt and pepper chicken wings, pork gyoza, prawn toasts, prawn crackers, schredded chilli beef, sweet and sour chicken and two lots of fried rice, all for £22.20. Bargainous.
