Went here last night after months of walking passed wondering what it’s like. Our server for the evening was a girl called Olivia. The place was empty but she made us feel right at home(literally its in an old cottage) Ordered the standard fish and chips and it was great! Will definitely recommend this to people who prefer a sit in fish and chip dinner as opposed to a takeaway although they do that as well.

I had promised my daughter scampi and chips for supper tonight and we decided to try Brett’s rather than head off to a pub. It was our first visit and the interior is very vintage but not in that cool fashionable way… There were 2 other couples already eating so it was very quiet but the speed of service did not reflect this. We must have been waiting for our meal to arrive for at least 25 minutes and we waited for our bread and mushy peas to arrive several minutes after the main course. The meal itself was perfectly nice but nothing special. At around £12 for the scampi and chips alone I did not feel it represented good value for money. I also felt irritated by the automatic 10% gratuity added to the bill given that the service was so slow and slightly dour. Might use the takeaway service again if I was passing by but will not eat in again!

We took my fry up lovin’ ma and pa to Bretts for a fishy treat, having heard lots of good things. I’m sorry to say how disappointed I was, especially after all the good things I have read about this place. I have eaten at both the restaurant and had a take away from Bretts, and have found neither visit to have been that good. The restaurant /café feels very 1930’s inside — oak paneling, a few pictures dotted around the walls and oak tables and chairs. However thing is so close together that I can imagine it feeling cramped when full. It’s not going to be to everyone’s taste. For me it felt like an old lady tearoom minus any retro vibe that might give it some charm. We went on a Saturday lunch time in March, and there was only one waitress on, and this clearly caused a delay to our food. we waited 20 mins for deep fried food! My mother and I had a mixed fish platter each, and while some of it was nice, our squid was either very over cooked or had extreme freezer burn — it was beyond chewy and further inspection revealed a hard and fibrous pearlescent ring of massacred squid. When I complained, the waitress returned to tell us the chef says«he has cooked it for the shortest time possible». That’s not acceptable in my book, luckily on telling our waitress this, we were given a replacement. This was scampi and was actually very expertly cooked, if very, very greasy. The rest of the fish on my mixed platter was varied — some of it really lovely; it’s clear they know how to cook haddock, but other fish were overdone. The batter is heavy, and suits wet, meaty fish like cod and haddock, but not scampi and squid. Our chips were pale, too firm and too floury for my liking, and would have benefited from a second fry. The mushy peas and coleslaw were nice; standard but not lovely. Finally, a fish supper for 4 people came to over £60 — certainly not value for money in my book. A note on the stairs to the toilet, these are really poor — even the rubber safety strips were slippery and one patron even fell down the stairs while we eating. I have to say, our waitress was excellent — she retained a cheerful and helpful attitude, even though she was clearly very busy. When we have had take away, it’s obvious that the food benefits from being wrapped in paper — it’s less greasy but retains that fried in dripping flavour, and the chips loose some of their solidity, but this is not enough to make me want to go back ever again. I’ve popped a similar review in other places, because i really am surprised that this pace has had consistently excellent reviews and feel that perhaps a fussy eater like me has a duty to inform the world, well Leeds, that Bretts is not for everyone.

Some weeks ago my boyfriend and I decided to treat ourselves and eat out for tea. Having come out a little too early for Thai Sabai we ended up standing on a street corner in Headingley a little stumped for somewhere to nosh. There, like a beacon of obvious, was Brett’s Fish Restaurant! I’ve so often wandered past their lovely front garden and fancied trying out their menu that it was decided then and there. Inside is just as quaint as outside — the whole place feels like an old tea room, it’s a quaint old place that reminds me of those cute seaside cafes that you can find in Devon and the like. As we were early we had our pick of tables, although there are only about seven or eight in total! The menu is reasonably simplistic, and a little pricier than the takeaway fish and chip shops near by, but once the food arrived I realised I was getting what I had paid for. The fish was beautifully cooked and the service was grand. My boyfriend was a little disappointed that his platter of various seafoods were all in batter, but being a glutton that was no bad thing in my mind! Batter rules, especially with Brett’s lovely curry sauce. All in all I’ll be sure to come back every so often, depending on both the £s and lbs!

I agree with previous comments, the food is really quite good but there seems to be a bit of a surly attitude with the staff. I do think that BRYANS, not too far away in Far Headingley, is preferable.

Down a path, removed from the traffic that often polutes North Lane in Headingley, and away from the many Otley Runners making their way to the Headingley Taps, sits Brett’s. A traditional fish and chip restaurant, its ‘dollshouse’ appearance really does redeem what would otherwise be a bit of a grim part of Headingley. Brett’s has a main restaurant, seving up outstanding quality fish and chips, in an idyllic old fashioned oak panneled setting. A classy spin on an old favourite. I have to admit, I have never actually eaten in the restaurant itself, but oh! How I long to. What I have done though, is queue up outside their ‘fast food area’. To the right of the warm, delightful-looking restaurant, they have a fish bar, ideal for passers-by, serving up all the chippy favourites. There is a miniture seating area, though beware, it is barely used due to the queues getting pretty long in the evenings. It is a brilliant touch, enabling their fish and chips to be sampled by anyone, including those who don’t have the time to sit down to a slap-up meal. This is a very good thing! The food is fantastic, those ‘chief fryers’ know how it’s done! I highly recommend Brett’s as a fish bar, and cannot wait to go to the main restaurant.

Originalyl Headingley was well known for it’s Test Cricket and as a wealthy, well respected village. However, with the increase of students in the outskirts of city, KFC’s, clubs and bars, the town is almost recognizable. This is apart from Bretts Fish Restaurant. The is nowhere else you can sit and eat a takeaway or sit down and have a meal in a 1930’s oak paneled surrounding! Bretts ivy covered restaurant really does stand out from businesses such as Lucky’s and Gangster’s takeaway on the same road with very contrasting, modern exterior. Bretts has many famous specials(as well as their gorgeous, traditional fish and chips… very scrummy) such as Lincolshire Maris Piper potatoes and Icelandic Haddock. Bretts has put a classy twist on a meal that has been branded in modern society as a dirty, greasy takeaway. You can eat a well presented, fish meal in Bretts restaurant with a lovely bottle of wine off the extensive wine list! Due to it’s location Brett’s is often frequented by cricket media and fans!!! You must book your table during Test Match season well before!! I

I was not even aware of Brett’s presence until a few years back when a friend suggested we should go in after watching a cricket match at Headingley stadium. Before visiting Brett’s, I had been satisfied with the other two standard Headingley chippies, Midgley’s and Bryan’s(both excellent) but, as I realised on my first visit, Brett’s outshines both. There are many, many reasons for this; firstly, it just feels like a chippy — always a long queue of cold Leodensians dying for something warm and fattening, staff who yell orders to each other and have aprons covered in chip fat, and a couple of rickety sheltered benches just outside the shop for those who can’t wait until they get home. On top of this, the setting(inside an old, ivy-covered terraced house on North Lane) makes Brett’s both quaint and perfectly located in equal measure. Whether you’ve been at the cricket, the rugby, or just on a ten hour drinking binge, Brett’s is always a welcome sight. But it is the food, of course, which makes the biggest difference. Rumour has it that the reason that Brett’s batter tastes crispier than anywhere else is down to the use of beef fat, rather than vegetable oil — a stroke of genius I’m sure you’d agree(as well as making the food taste better, it also means there are no vegetarians ahead of you in the queue!). The cod and haddock itself tastes and feels fresher than any other Leeds fishery I have stumbled upon, and the chips are just glorious. Go to Brett’s. Go now.

Brett’s is located in the heart of headingley, providing some of the best fish and chips in leeds. The fish are always really tasty and the batter crispy. There are benches outside in the summer for you to eat your takeaways on, perfect before an evening in Headingley, or after an afternoon at the cricket.

I have never eaten in the restaurant but I have had takeaway fish and chips a number of times and they are delicious. The fish is cooked superbly, the fish isn’t dry and the batter is crisp and not soggy. The chips are golden, fluffy and fab(again not soggy). The food is cooked fresh and is hot when you get it. The service is great even when it’s busy and the price are standard but the quality is fantastic. It’s a great local chippy.

At Bretts the food is always very fresh and the fish is always crispy. One of the reasons its the best fish and chip around is that they fry all their food in beef dripping rather than vegetable oil. Makes everything taste so good! I usually just take out but i have on a few occasions eaten in the restaurant. Once for fish and chips and once for the breakfast served on the weekends. It is a bit more to eat in the restaurant but the service is good. You can always eat on the benchs outside for free though. One of the best fish and chip shops in leeds!

Most of us had fish as a main course. I had fish casserole, and can quite honestly say it was the nicest fish dish I have ever eaten, and inspired me to write this review. My husband had the halibut, and is of a similar opinion. My fish came with a dish of buttered spinach, and we all shared side orders of jenga chips and fried courgettes. Delicious. Some of our party had locally sourced steak, A nice place to eat

As a family we have been coming here for years. Superb, best fish and chips in Leeds. I have been coming to this fish and chip shop for over thirty years, my parents worked in Headingley so I speant a lot of time there as a child and they are still serving great fish and chips. I always go here when i go to the cricket in the summer, nipping out for fish and chips.

One of the best fish and chip shops in Leeds. Gorgeous flaky fish, with a nice golden crispy batter, sumptious chips that melt in your mouth lathered in lashings of salt and vinegar and plenty of scraps. A round of bread and butter and a can of coke, mmmmmm heaven.

Although I have never actually eaten inside Brett’s I have fond memories of school lunch times walking into Headingley and getting fish, chips and scraps with loads of salt and vinegar and eating it in the outdoor sheltered section. If you have a leeds card you can get a discount here although it is quite reasonably priced anyway.

Om nom nom, Bretts is the best fish and chip shop within a two mile radius of my house, FACT. They even give you scraps if you want them. I like a nice battered snorker, chips and gravy. And a tin of dandelion and burdock. Laaaavely.
