cheapish pub beer, food fairly basic pub-grub, best bit was great staff, inside looks tired, remember this location as a motorcycle store.

The Hogs Head chain is a bit naff if I’m being honest. In fact it’s only saving grace is the cheap food you can get which is pretty standard pub food at low prices. This one in Leeds is a bit dirty, with awful toilets, sticky table tops and pretty bad service from the staff. If they’re not forgetting your food is ready and serving it cold, they’re yapping to their mates while you’re waiting to be served. And don’t get me started on the choice of music — banging chav anthems that be heard across the street at the weekends attracting an all manner of characters. Before I get branded as a toff, I’m certainly not opposed to dirty, cheap pubs that serve poor beer; in fact I’m well aquainted with them, I just don’t like places like this that basically promote chav culture to make a quick book. Avoid.

The Hogshead isn’t exactly Leeds’ finest venue for the drinking and eating experience, but it certainly isn’t one to turn your nose up to entirely either. It was in fact, rather unromantically, the place where I went on my first ‘date’ as it were with my current boyfriend about three and a half years ago! Not ideal, but hey — we’re still together now, so it wasn’t all bad! Basically, for the Hogshead little has changed since then. I think we had a cheap burger and chips to soak up the copious cheap lagers we were drinking, and it was totally pub-tastic food. Not gourmet, frankly, but certainly it filled the alcohol shaped hole in my stomach! There’s plenty of places to sit in here too, being one of the larger pubs around, so never fear if it looks busy.(Which it invariably does!) Cheap, cheerful and a tad on the sporty side at times, this place is all right with me. Totally dandy!

The day I dared to mention I’d had a rather pleasant, and cheap lunch in the Hogshead, I was met with looks of derision and expected leg pulling on my part. I was unaware it had any reputation as a bit of a rough pub, and in the fair few times I’ve been in I haven’t experienced anything untoward in the trouble causing area. When you walk in it’s not quite a pub and not quite a bar either, there’s sofas knocking around and pine type tables and chairs. There’s also the brief moment you walk in and the locals collectively look at you, but it doesn’t last long and it’s not too bad. We were actually really surprised by the food, a waiter came to the table, took the order, which was nicely shocking in itself, some of the menu bits were two for one, as was all desserts, and for the two of us i think the total came to £14 for a drink, main, and pudding each. Saturday afternoons when the sports type events are on make the place a bit crowded, but on none match days I find it to be all ruddy right.

Great value for money pub in the centre of leeds just off the main shopping drag of Briggate. Friendly staff and great deals, 2 meals for £6.95 from a selection of favourites you can’t go wrong. You do get what you pay for so don’t expect restaurant quality food and service but it does exactly what it says on the tin or box ! Drinks deals are always on and the clientelle mixed and friendly. Nice atmosphere although possibly in need of a little updating. Highly recommend.
