Service here is absolutely aweful. I visit quite infrequently as a result, and then it’s just on account of the coffee being better than others close by. Even then it isn’t great coffee. The staff look hen-pecked, flustered, unorganised… not professional on any level, with the exception of matching uniforms. The guy who owns the place has been mentioned a lot on here, for his not so charming approach to customers. I can’t agree more that he should be working in an office somewhere. The public are hard to deal with, agreed, but obviously too hard for him. When he asked if he could get anything else for a customer sat next to me(which in itself seemed a stretch for him) the girl replied«Oh yes actually, I might have something sweet. What cakes do you have?» To which he replied«There are too many to say, you’ll have to go and look yourself». She half stood up to do this, and then dropped back into her chair, realised the sharp tone of his voice, and clearly making the decision not to give him any more of her custom. So she said simply«I don’t think I’ll bother, could I just have the bill please?» Then with his back to her, cleaning another table said«Just pay on your way out». The girl and her friend proceeded to rant about his terrible attitude, and how they had experienced it time and again, not knowing why they ever come back. They also referred to other friends of theirs experiencing the same from him. So the reputation of Rotcher and its owner seems to precede them. Try Scufflers(off the Co-op car park). Small, but much better coffee and a smile too!

I have been asked to write a review of rotcher by my seven year old daughter, who is very upset by the comments made by ‘gollo3978’ and the previous review. We,(me, my husband and my three children aged 7, 5 and 2) have been going to rotcher since it opened over two years ago and have never been treated badly or offencively in any way. When I first started going I was heavily pregnant and was always made to feel welcome, with the owners, especially Dean, being very chatty and friendly. Since the, birth nothing in that respect has changed, still very friendly and chatty. When any of my family visit from London or Holland we always use rotcher, my children wont go to any other café in Holmfirth. All my friends use rotcher, last year one of them had a childrens party there where the hosts couldnt have done more to make it special. At Halloween and Christmas they give sweets to the children who visit. The food is always excellent and very large portions, the cakes are superb and very large portions again. You would have to go a very very long way to find a better coffee. The bathrooms are always spotless and the staff are always friendly and polite. Sure Dean can come across as a little grumpy at times but thats just his way, he’s a really nice person when you talk to him! I told Dean about what had been said on this site about him and rotcher and he says that ‘people who have really enjoyed rotcher can’t wait and bend over backwards to tell them before they leave’ but people who havent enjoyed never say a word to them but cant wait to put it out on line somewhere’ so he doesnt look anymore. I hope that We(my daughter and I) have redressed the ballance a little because we love rotcher and think that its very child friendly indeed. p.s E(my daughter) wants to say that rotcher do the best milkshakes and fairycakes in the universe, and can she give them 10 zillion out of five!!!

We have visited Rocher a few times and always been very happy with the service and enjoyed the food, however on our last two visits there was a definate shift in attitude and this can only be down to one thing, we now have a baby! The first time we found a table downstairs out of the way and my husband asked the gentleman in charge if we could use the highchair, he was obviously not pleased about this and commented that we would probably not find a table anyway. My husband explained we were already at a table and he reluctantly gave us the chair. We thought we must have called on an off day and that they were obviously busy, however after our last visit I now know this not to be the case! My husband, my one year old daugher and myself called in for a sandwich on a very quiet Thursday afternoon. I would class it as quiet as there was only us in there. My husband again asked the gentleman if we could use the highchair, again he was not pleased and as we walked to a table, out of the way, he told the waitress to go and get our pushchair and put it behind the door. The waitress a little embarrassed came to us and explained that she was going to take the pushchair to which I replied that I would need to take our daughter out first and then I would collapse it for her. The gentleman obviously quizzed the young waitress about why she had reemerged without our pushchair as she had to explain to him what I was doing and why she was empty handed. I agree that in a busy café bar nobody, including myself, wants unruly children and toddlers running about however give parents some credit and lose the arrogant obnoxious attitude towards customers that have children. My daughter is very well behaved and used to being out with us. At the end of the day the establishment was empty and our pram would not have caused any inconveinience to anyone had there been others in. I wouldn’t have minded if the gentleman had come over himself and politly explained that he didn’t like prams in his café and could he pop it somewhere until we had finished, however he obviously has a lot to learn about customer service and decorum. I woud like to highlight to Rocher and in particular to the gentleman in charge that it is the customers that keep you in business and pay your wages. You may not like children or want them to form part of your customer base, but if that is the case I suggest that you have the balls to communicate with customers and tell them that or at the very least put a large sign in your window stating NOCHILDRENALLOWED. I would have preferred this as I could have enjoyed my lunch in one of the much more friendly cafes on offer instead of feeling uncomfortable and angry in yours. We will definately not be returning and hope that this makes anyone with children think twice too!!!

I’ve been to Rotcher on a number of occasions and have always found the atmosphere, staff and service to be excellent. However… …I am now a mum. Rotcher is NOT child friendly. This in itself is not a problem, nor is it a criticism. I had a life before baby and I certainly didn’t appreciate going for a quiet coffee only to find myself knee deep in delinquent toddlers. What I do object to is going to a café that I like with my 11 month old and partner in complete ignorance. We weren’t given the usual warm welcome from the staff — I just assumed they were having an ‘off’ day, we all have them so didn’t really think about it. On sitting down, I happened to read a laminated card placed triumphantly on the table which was so sneery and sarcastic in it’s tone it made me extremely angry. It was entitled«a polite note to parents» or something similar. Listed on this passive agressive bit of literature was a litany of «do not let your children… blah blah blah». Unbelievable! We had already ordered and had no choice but to neck our brews and get out before our child climbed on the furniture or committed some other heinous offence. I am annoyed that we had to pay for our coffees, even though we didn’t enjoy them once we had read the rules and regulations. In fact, I’m quite sure we felt as uncomfortable as one of their«desirable» punters who doesn’t like being in the same air-space as children. Imagine sitting down in a café and being told how to behave. If you don’t want kids in your café that’s fine but put a big notice on your door so people don’t accidently order something before finding out they’re not welcome!

I have been to the Rotcher Café a few times over the last few months, the décor & location are great but unfortunately the service has let it down every single time I have been. I don’t like to be rushed but nor do I expect to wait 20 minutes to be served whilst the staff have a committee meeting. I dine out alot & know that sometimes it’s a fine line between good a bad services & every establishment has bad days however I fear that the Rotcher simply hasn’t learned a thing about service & the pattern has never changed! Today was a prime example: I stood at the counter because I was unable to get to the menus due to a group of customers talking, so I ask a member of staff stood no more than 2 feet away on the opposite side of the counter if she could pass me a menu«they are here, help yourself» was the reply — clearly I couldn’t!!! As the group dispersed I was eventually able to get my menu! I took a table on the mezzanine level noting that there were only a couple of other customers in &2 staff busy talking! 10 Minutes passed, I sat & waited for someone to take my order, nothing. Another customer came in & was given a menu & told to take a seat«I will come and take your order in a few minutes to give you a chance to read the menu», which was a fair statement said a member of staff. 20 minutes after I sat down I was still waiting for someone to take my order, there were now 3 staff still having a committee meeting. I got up & walked out slamming the door in disgust! If you are not bothered about service don’t open! I for one will not step foot in this place again unless at the express wish of whoever I am meeting! Otherwise I will endeavour to discourage my friends from going to an establishment that does not warrant patronage of any kind!

This is such a welcome break from the more«old lady» cafes of Holmfirth! There’s a good food & drink menu; when I went I just had a smoothie & cake, but would definitely go back for food based on those! The smoothie was freshly made & yummy, & I got a really generous slice of cake, which was lovely & moist. I’d definitely recommend it!

Rotcher is just what Holmfirth needed! It has a modern, contempory menu with a large range of reasonably priced food and, having visited on numerous occasions, I must say the ffod is delicious! I have not been let down once. The coffees are lovely, the nicest in Huddersfield in my opinion, and I will pass on the word to coffee fans everywhere! Great service from approachable, young, friendly staff, and on a final note I must say thankyou to Rotcherfor bringing Holmfirth into the 21st Century!

The food is very good, but I feel I have to comment on the very slow service, we viewed it as one of our favourite cafes in Holmfirth and after the 1st and 2nd visits we just put the slow service down to co-incidence, but on our 6th visit we were left sitting 20mins with our finished dishes infront of us, after getting up and asking to have some coffees we were told the waitress would come and take our order, another 10mins passed, still no service so we left without coffees or desserts and went to another café, we are very dissapointed and won’t go back again now.

a new licensced café in Holmfirth. Excellent windows for viewing the town. Everything to eat you cam imagine, and if you dont see it — ask. they may put it on the menu. The couple that own it are putting their heart and soul into the place, and you can tell. Its clean, friendly and inexpensive. Gives the other cafes a run for there money
