Now the last time I was here, it was the Three Monkeys, a pretty terrible but entertaining bar with some rather terrifying customers. Now, it’s been bought over, and is forming part of the gentrification of Portobello. It does food too — Caribbean street food — which was the main attraction for pulling us in. The SR, who considers himself to be an expert in all foody things Caribbean style, was disappointed at the lack of ackee and dumplings. However, where it fell down there, it got a thumbs up for the rip-your-wotsits off spicy sauce which turned your moth nuclear, even just a drop. Thank foodness for mango salad and coleslaw — everything has it’s rightful place in the world. The jerk chicken(and for me jerk sweet potato) were pretty spicy too, and I enjoyed the sweetcorn. The Porty Palm Tree is also dog friendly, and has a beer garden, and some pretty good tunes playing. Definitely an improvement on the monkeys, although I think the clientele may have migrated across to The Galleon.

Portobello area has never been short of bars and with my time coming here for the past few years I’ve seen a few come and go. Palm Tree is a new addition to Portobello high street with a new make over, I kind of miss the old bar that was once there before, as they had more drink options here now you have to go for the third choice, as there are fewer options available & unknown beer’s. But one good thing is that there is now a food — snack menu on offer where as before there was only crisps & nuts available and a beer garden out the back. I get the feeling that this bar is really aimed at the younger crowd, next time I’m in l I will give the food a try.
