When staying in Durham or nearby we love to use the Gala theatre for wonderful shows as well as 2 great cinema screens.

A brilliant edition to Durham! A theatre with a wide range of plays, concerts and different things on all the time. They often have comedians on and the comedy store from Manchester appears once a month and is excellent. It also has a cinema in the basement which is small but does show current listings and does mean there is still one in Durham however having been a few times the metro or boldon are much better. The gala also has a nice coffee shop/restaurant which does good cheap food. The tourist information is also in the same building

There are all sorts of shows put on in the gala, from local youth theatre groups to more established stars doing small venue tours. The auditorium is small with a lovely intimate feel and a good design and acoustic. It is a very flexible multi-role space capable of putting on shows with complex special effects. The cinema part of the complex is downstairs and is a good place to watch a movie.

The Gala theatre and cinema are right in the centre of Durham, just a short walk from the market place. The theatre hosts a variety of shows from the youth theatre groups to touring comics. The cinema shows a couple of different films each week and is much cheaper than going to a cineworld or odeon for example. just check out their website for the prices and times.

The Gala Theatre and Cinema is located in the new Walkergate complex at the bottom of Claypath. The building also houses Durham tourist Information centre. There is one auditorium that puts on different shows and plays and one cinema screen which shows the latest films. Both are on the small side, but it makes for a nice cosy atmosphere It also have 2 bars, but if you can get away with it, I probably wouldn’t drink too much there as it can get expensive! Right next door is the new car park which is extremely handy and lots of bars and restaurants to end the evening in.

The Gala Theatre is in a bit of an awkward place I feel, but inside is modern with disabled access. They have a nice cinema although it does not have many seats. Good shows on but in general pricier than Odeon or Newcastle Theatre.
