This is the kind of place I wish there was more of. There’s often far and few between of such little authentic gems. The husband and wife who own this business are the ones who were serving the curry. The wife Jay, who specifically served me, was so friendly and happy to talk me through all the curry’s on offer that day — even with the ever growing queue of avid curry eaters behind me! I felt like a friend of daughters that was visiting for the first time and a little shy. If you’re after a greasy classic British curry that leaves you feeling lethargic then this is NOT the place. Instead what you will find is limited menu of authentic Gujarati currys’ made that day. Gujarat is a western state of India with extensive coastlines providing wholesome seafood dishes. However, the state is primarily vegetarian(due to Jain and Hindi influence). As such, Gujarati cuisine has a reputation for being healthy, with an array of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Gujarati cuisine, including that which is available at Tiffins, uses less oil, none of their dishes contain ghee(clarified butter) or artificial colourings/flavourings. They really do provide authentic real Indian food. Each day you will find something different but if you become a regular you will soon learn your favourites and some dishes are more frequent than others. In addition to the wide range of vegetarian dishes, there is a chicken and a lamb dish everyday. It’s £6.50−7 for a meat curry and £6 for a vegetable curry(for the larger boxes). At lunch time its £5.50 for a vegetable curry and rice = bargain. The food is chilled in a counter from which you can choose your feast for that day. The food can be leisurely taken home to warm in the oven/microwave –unlike the traditional takeaway, where, with my family there is always a mad rush to get home in order to keep the food as hot as humanly possible. My mum is very fussy. Plates must be heated at least 30 minutes in advance. Cold plates are for heathens in her household. Alternatively you can eat in — they will happily warm it up for you. However, its not really a place to be dining in, I think there’s just the one table. It’s designed to be taken away, besides I think there’s more fun to be had that way. Also, there are chappatis, naans, and their chilli and coriander chutney. For some, the chutney alone makes the trip to Tiffins a worthy one.

Absolutely, without a doubt, THE best Indian I’ve ever eaten. Ever! Tiffins offers incredible value for money, absolutely fresh, great choice of food healthy even. £4.50 for rice and veg curry, or £5.50 for meat curry. The couple who run it are lovely, always ready to chat, and advise on what curries have been cooked fresh that day. Cannot compliment their food and service enough! Definitely try the homemade chutney with your free popadoms or a naan.

Tiffins is already covered in detail by Ian O, but it’s always nice to have a second opinion. However I am inclined to agree with the vast majority of what he says. Lets start off with a warning — don’t bother with the pizzas, better ones are offered down the road, but you’re not going to an Indian restaurant for pizza anyway. The menu of food is indigenous to Gujarat, and as Ian says, is idiosyncratic in its variety. Don’t come here expecting horrible Anglicised versions of curries. The southern aromas and northern spices are nowhere to be seen but instead you get very refined Western Indian curries, packed with vegetables and a limited selection of meat, which is a great sign of authenticity as the region is largely Hindu. Get a lunchtime special and you won’t be disappointed.

I couldn’t believe this place didn’t already have a review next to it. Tiffins is home to some of the most flavoursome curry and friendliest service in Bristol. Situated opposite the Highbury Vaults, the top-end of St Michael’s Hill has everything you need to tee you off on your night out during the weekend, or to complete a nice mid-week treat. I used to frequent this place for a cheeky lunchtime fill-up when my work was located nearby, but now that I live remarkably close to this establishment, there is nothing stopping me. Tiffin’s offers a menu of food idiosyncratic to Gujarat, a state in the Western region of India. This means vegetables and lots of spice. If you like neither of those, stop reading now! There are vegan and vegetarian options, as well as a daily chicken and a daily lamb dish. There is a varied and ever-changing selection of vegetable dishes, so you are guaranteed a change each time you visit. Interestingly, they also offer tandoori Pizza’s cooked in format of you in their huge pizza oven, worth a shout if you’re feeling something different. The lunchtime special is good for a weekly treat. £5.50 buys you a meat and vegetable dish with rice in a handy takeaway lunchbox. After a while, they’ll recognise you and probably chuck in a free popadom or two, too! The only thing stopping this from getting top marks is perhaps the ambience. The staff are amazing and friendly, and the place is spotless and airy, but it isn’t really somewhere that you would choose to go in for a sit-down meal in the evening. It isn’t quite a café and isn’t quite a restaurant. But for takeaway or a lunchtime sit in visit it is ace and if you like spicy meaty veg goodness you can’t go wrong!
