M&M Kebab & Pizza is on Marsh Street, alongside Start the Bus. There’s usually about a dozen Domino’s pizza bikes parked outside(free, courtesy of Bristol City Council) so no prizes for guessing where the competition is. The inside is nice and sparkly and clean which gives a good first impression. There’s basic seating and a television to watch. I had the quarter pound burger which was just average for this kind of place. The prices aren’t average though. You pay over the odds here. A burger is £3 and chips £1.80 which makes for an expensive meal for this kind of food. Not good value for money.

In my opinion there are way too many greasy kebab shops in Bristol, they just seem to be everywhere — and this one is no different at all. I do tend to get dragged to these places after a night out by my friends, and this is pretty much the only time I ever come to them. I’ve been to this one a few times and ordered their chips, and in my experience they don’t cook them for long enough — you know when you get a hard bit in the middle — yuk! From the outside this joint looks the same as all the others and is nothing special — you know, with a tacky exterior just screaming grease! M & M offer all your standard greasy kebab style foods such as kebabs, burgers, chips etc… definitely not somewhere I would recommend as there are much nicer places in the area! I guess it serves a purpose for after a night out, but I am not a fan…

Yuck, I’m sorry but I really am not a fan of these places. Empty during the day and heaving with drunken youths in the evening. No, not something I like at all. Plus the food is horrendously greasy and you can literally feel your life expectancy slip away before your very eyes as you chow down on some cheesy chips. Buuut as much as I regret to say it, there is something so wonderful about these places after a night out so I can’t be too hard on them. Plus the staff in this particular joint really know how to handle a rowdy crowd, and best of all they were really efficient in dishing up my chips. And they weren’t half bad if I am being totally honest.

After a Saturday night out on the razz, a kebab tastes like a kebab, the price is insignificant and the after effects never seem to enter my thoughts. M&M kebabs is the sort of place you might find yourself in post-Start the Bus, Timbuk2 or Wetherspoons and does not disappoint. The menu is the same as most, so you won’t be too confused after one too many vodka-lime-and-lemonades.

It’s always a plus point, I think, for a kebab joint to be off the main drag of kebab shops in Bristol. M&M’s clearly do a roaring trade thanks to Start The Bus over the road, and I’ve been in numerous times in varying states of coherence. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t in a good enough state to assess the quality, which was pretty high for a central kebab joint. At the same time though, fairly greasy and not too cheap, so it’s pretty much bunched in with the rest. Good chips, however, will redeem it, as will the more friendly service and lesser queues than the standard shops over near the taxi rank.
