I really like the Kellaway. It is a local pub with a lot of oomph and passion for all things pub — food, drinks and community. Their special lunchtime deal of two lunches for £7.95 is a bonus, as the food is brilliant. Another special quirk is a basket of free chips that is handed to every table halfway through their Wednesday night pub quiz. Thursday nights are always jampacked as it is the Kellaway’s live acoustic night which regularly features great up-and-coming performers. The Kellaway boasts a fantastic large pub garden which is perfect for drinking the afternoon away. Basically, thumbs up all round!

The Pub is an embodiment of what one would expect from and indeed want from your local, old décor, music from a jukebox, pork scratching on offer, and darts and pool to be played! I have spent many an afternoon enjoying the facilities on offer in this fine establishment. Every Christmas the pub dons its Christmas attire, and the staff hang tinsel from every conceivable object, making it a particularly fun place to be at that time of year. They don’t serve food, which is annoying because there isn’t anywhere nearby that does.

Sitting up in Redland, this is very near my old flat though I never frequented it regularly. It’s a street corner pub on Hampton Road a stone’s throw from Whiteladies, though it seems a world away from fashionable Clifton. The interior is large, old fashioned and nothing to get excited about. The’ve got a pool table, Sky Sports and a poker night on Sundays(I’ve got a mate who swears by it), but it’s all a bit too ye olde to be a place that’s going to fire up an exciting weekend night out. There are better options of this kind over on St Michaels Hill(The Highbury for one).

When you just want to go out in your jeans and t-shirt and sit with old men, drink real ale and scoff crisps, The Clyde answers your prayers. With tricky quiz nights, strange shots of bright liquers, and dependable pub chairs, this is the Sunday evening alternative to the Antiques Roadshow. The facilities are a bit seventies and the clientele hardly trendy, but give up your pretensions and sup from a tankard, you’ll be wearing slippers and stroking the friendly pub cat soon enough.

A locals pub during the day, this is often the starting point for a lot of people going drinking in Clfton. It’s not quite close enough to Whiteladies road though to be one of the 18 or so pubs that are part of the infamous Whiteladies road pub crawl(a review /guide /details will follow soon). The interior is very much traditional, panneled walls, dark heavly pattened carpet, rubbish paintings on the wall. The selection of drinks isn’t amazing, but a couple of real ales: Butcome and Doombar make it worthwhile for the beer aficionado. There is a small courtyard garden which keeps the smokers happy all though there is very little cover from the weather. The main highlight to this place is the non drink related activities. 2 pool tables, a dart board, four fruit machines, board games and a quiz machine make this good student territory but there’s enough to keep most people occupied. By all accounts the local pool team is very good, the large selection of trophies on display should vouch for that. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a paul newman then you’ll get a good game here. They do a quiz on Tuesday nights, which is truly dreadful. At least it was when I went and I really suggest you avoid it. The staff are a mixed bag, the land lady is lovely and friendly as are a couple of others(both female). The others I’ve met(mostly men) are either incompitant or condescending occasionally both. If you like more to do at a pub then just drink this should keep you happy however the décor will put most under 30’s off coming here. I would give this 2 and half stars but I can’t so it only gets 2.
