I did not like this place. The reason I am willing to give it two stars is because the food was stomach-able at best. It took an extraordinarily long time for simple food. The atmosphere is loud and SMELLY. The food left everything to be desired. Between the undercooked chips that were basically just soggy potato slices to the bread that I physically spit out, I hated it. The group I ate with didn’t hate it as much as I did, but the meal was met with a chorus of «it was… Okay.» We ended up here out of pure hunger and need for the bathroom. It satisfied one of those two. The man who served us was nice. Nothing against service besides the insurmountable amount of time it took. In summation, I hated it.

There is a bit of a Park Street pub crawl which usually starts at the bottom and ends at the top. The Ram is almost halfway up so by the time you get there, you’ve boozed your way through a couple of quality pubs at the College Green end(cue The Hatchet and Greene King) and before you reach the more questionable bars towards the top of Park Street(Elbow Rooms I’m thinking of you). The Bristol Ram is part of a chain but it has enough of an independent feel to make it one of the more worthy stop off points on Park Street. The booze isn’t too pricey, the vibe is laid back and chilled, it’s in stumbling distance of The Cooler and they have a wicked pub quiz. A good solid proper pub among some more pretentious additions on this drag.

You can tell how good a pub or eatery is by how kind and patient they are when you ask lots of awkward questions about the menu. I did just that at the Bristol Ram, because I had someone with me who had some food intolerances, so it was important to find out exactly what was in everything. The people behind the bar were absolutely brilliant, really helpful, not at all impatient or flustered by it all, spoke to the chef, reassured us. They seemed to be actually enjoying talking about something different and having a challenge. Apart from that, it’s a great pub anyway, and is almost a gastro-pub, but not in a pretentious, arty way. It looks and feels just like an ordinary pub — albeit a nicely presented, comfortable one — and it’s just got a really good menu. Classic pubs are actually quite few and far between around Park Street so this place does rightfully well.

This pub is strange to me. I don’t quite understand what their entire theme is; it isn’t a traditional pub, and it isn’t a flashy bar either. If they are trying to be somewhere in the middle, maybe it isn’t portrayed very well. The food is pricey for what it is; for example a Pieminister pie that only costs £5 from the actual Pieminister shop not too far away costs £9.50 here, which I think is a complete rip off! There is live music here every Friday and Saturday evenings, which is always fully packed, but unfortunately the vibes here just aren’t for me. This place is a big pub, suitable for those who want a pint when walking down Park Street, but I personally don’t think I will come here again anytime soon.

The Ram is in many ways your typical classic English pub, it’s a traditional feeling place with a warm and friendly atmosphere — great for grabbing a few drinks with friends and family, or for having some food. I really like this place, sometimes it’s nice to go somewhere that’s not so commercial like most bars and pubs are nowadays. In my opinion the Ram kind of sits in the middle, it’s not overly brilliant, but It’s also not bad at all, it is a comfortable and relaxing place, and generally it doesn’t get too busy so you can actually get a seat. Foods also pretty good, and they have a good selection of drinks — however prices can get a bit steep on Friday and Saturday nights. I’ve been to this pub a few times, but the fact it’s at the bottom of Park Street puts me off a bit because I mainly go to other places around the top and around the triangle — making it a bit of a walk — but it’s a good place, and I’d recommend it to anyone!

This used to be a real old man grunters pub which was best avoiding but has been refurbished to be an altogether slicker outfit. It still has a traditional frontage but is much fresher and cleaner inside. It’s great for watching rugby or footie on a Saturday while munching on a Pie Minister pie or some lovely bangers from the Bristol Sausage Shop in St Nick’s. But it’s got a fairly cool vibe in the evening too and is a great place to drink before heading to a gig at The Academy or The Colston Hall. The bar is really well stocked with lots of Youngs cask ales and a great cocktail menu. If you ask nicely the staff will usually rustle you up one if it’s not on the menu.

With time to kill before a gig at the 02 Academy(previously the Carling Academy) I headed up Park Street in search of somewhere to wet my whistle. With plenty of pubs and bars to choose from, it wasn’t long before I stumbled across Bristol Ram. In a lot of ways, The Ram is a breath of fresh air on Park Street amongst the shiny, sexy bars and the garish, sleek clubs as it is just a regular, old fashioned pub. The service isn’t particularly friend, and the atmosphere can be a little stale but they serve a descent pint at a reasonable price. I don’t make a habit of coming to The Ram often, but if you’re looking for a simple drink in simple surroundings — this is the place for you.

I find myself going into The Bristol Ram quite regularly, but whenever I do, I always think«why have I come in here again»? There’s nothing particularly wrong with pub, it has a decent selection of continental beers on both tap and in the fridge. The food is pretty good and it famously serves a whopping 16oz beef burger, which is frankly too large even for me. But whenever I walk in what strikes me every time is just how dead the place feels, even with a large group of people in there. I think the décor and lighting has something to do with this. It’s all dark wood and very cold lighting, plus the liveliest area of the pub tends to be at the back and down a set of stairs, so at first glance the place feels soulless. I know why I go in so often. It’s the location. Situated towards the bottom end of Park Street, it benefits from me not wanting to walk up a steep hill. With this location it should be heaving all the time, but it’s not and I think that says it all.

I used to come here quite often before a night out because the food was good if a little dull and they did good beer(it is a Youngs brewery — Bombardier!) and great champagne cocktails. The crowd was always genteel but young and you could pretty much always find a table. It also has the feel of a proper pub rather than a bar so the atmosphere is relaxed. However a hiccup occurred with some terrible meals and having to put up with the band playing downstairs — the place isn’t soundproofed very well and going to the downstairs loos was quite painful on the ear. However the positioning in town and the cocktails may yet entice me back for another go…

The Ram is certainly one of the better pubs on Park Street. Firstly, it’s a Young’s pub, which means it does good(if slightly pricey) food, though you’ll want to try and come here earlier if you want to eat it in a fairly serene atmosphere. This also means they specialise in ales, though obviously this is mainly a place for the beer boys. It gets busy on weekends, especially when they cram a band in(it’s always free entry though). This place’s saving grace, however, is the back room, which is more secluded and less noisy. It means you occasionally have to fight your way to the bar, but you can get a seat back there on even the busiest night, and in this part of town that counts for quite a lot.

At times, those going out drinking on the weekend can make Park Street a bit of hell hole. I know this sounds like a line from an wingy NIMBY letter in the local rag. However, the state of this road on a Saturday night really is something else. A relief, then, to find somewhere a touch more civilised than most of what’s on offer here. The Ram is a pretty middle of the market bar. Although it’s smart, with wood floors and neat bar staff, they still have sky sports on in the backgroud. I like this, a bar doesn’t have to either be super swanky or a total dive. Downstairs there’s another bar with live music played(I should declare a conflict of interest; they once put my friends band on). Slightly secluded from the fun on Park Street, keep a note of this for when you need to take shelter. Not too posh, but not a ‘lets get paraletic and fight something’ bar. This makes it a a nice contrast to its surroundings.

Whenever I go into this place it always seems to be quiet. It’s a nice place don’t get me wrong but there never anything going on when I’m there. There’s always posters on the wall advertising the sport on a weekend but I’ve never gone in to check it out. Having said that, the drinks are nice and the food sounds pretty good. The last time I was in I had a sandwich and a side of chunky chips and they were excellent! They seemed to have taken care over the food and I was impressed. The sandwich was massive! It’s more spacious than it looks from the outside too. Seems to be a favourite haunt for local suits after work, if I worked in town I’d definately pop in for a quiet pint after work now and again.
