This pub is a bit of a trek out of town, but that’s not a bad thing, it has given the Cider House a really random mix of people and not who you’d expect at all given the location of the pub, but then maybe I’m stereotyping. But being in this part of town makes the drinks very cheap and tends to remove any pretentiousness. The proper West Country(very strong) broad selection of ciders has to be the highlight. Perfect for pickling your brain and making sure you remember none of your evening. The open mic nights are the very definition of openness, there was some music being played but I think the ‘comedian’ was the real low light. The crowd was very polite though, he’s lucky he hasn’t taken his show to Newcastle or Ireland. There’s also a beautiful cast iron staircase, leading up to a balcony and outside smoking area at the back.

I stumbled on this little pub with some friends a few days ago, when we were headed for Cosies, but didn’t want to pay a cover charge to go somewhere to have a drink. So we all ended up here, and I think I completely fell in love with it the minute I walked in. What a place! It is totally gorgeous, and feel so rich in tradition. The seating areas look like little bays that you’d get in an old boat, and the bunting around helps to add to that imagery. There are plenty of old wine bottles in dusty glass cupboards, huge wood barrels of cider and old posters around and about this pub. The bar is small, mainly serving cider, with a few other choices of beer, wine, spirits and ale. Up the lovely stairs, there is a room that looks like an old mini library, a small balcony and another room off the main one, that has several Chesterfields. They do a ‘Host a Roast’ every Sunday, where you can book a roast for a group(minimum of 10 people) for £7.50 and basically it’s like having people over your house for a roast, except that you don’t make any of the food. Hosts get to eat free too. I am already looking forward to coming back here, probably next for their open mic night that’s on every Thursdays, to enjoy this place again, and their yummy cider selection. A star of a pub.
