I wish this place wasn’t so far away. As a kid, I used to watch Home & Away and wish that I could live like the kids who used to hang around in the diner all day. This is as close as it gets. There is a diner, sand, volleyball, coffee, orange juice and people wearing yellow polo t-shirts. All year round. They sell pretty good nachos. If you’re into volleyball, you will want to spend all of your time here. Best of all, they have a room called The Clubhouse. What a great name. I want this one room to be my home. It’s light and spacious. Suddenly you are surrounded only by the sea. You walk in and all you want to do is shut the door behind you and sleep. Perhaps you’ll switch on the TV for some background noise and have some diner food delivered to you every few hours. This is my dream. I’m walking on air.

Having a new baby is opening up a whole world of new places to visit. I always knew that the volleyball courts were here at Yellowave, but what I didn’t know was that is was also home to a fantastic café with outside seating, event space that is bright, sunny and clean, and a sandpit area for the kiddies to play in(what a hidden treat amongst Brighton’s pebbles!) I now attend a baby class here on a Tuesday and it’s impossible not to hang around and enjoy the space afterwards. It will be even more delightful when summer eventually arrives, but I can imagine the area will soon become busy. There are baby change facilities too, which has now become a must have when I’m choosing places to visit — oh, how life has changed!

I’ll admit I’ve only ever been to Yellowave for coffee! I’m not really into beach sports, and Yellowave is a little bit too far out of the way for me to want to go there specifically for anything to eat or drink. It is right opposite the Concorde 2 on madeira drive, and as I used to have lectures there and gig there sometimes, I go inside for a hot drink sometimes. They provide Soya Milk, which is always a good thing for me as I take it in my coffee. They also sell hot food and salads, which I have heard really good reviews of from friends. If I ever decide to take up volleyball, I will make sure I head to yellowave!

I went to Yellowave for the first time this weekend to play a Volleyball Beach tournie with friends. I was really impressed with the venue. Being a volleyball player myself and an addict I must say, this is a great place to train and play beach. The sand is perfect, there are around 6 courts available, and the staff clearly know their stuff! There’ also a lovely café/bar to chill out and have snacks, a climbing wall for fitness and an area for children to play with the sand outside of the courts. The venue is also available for some other sports like beach soccer, beach rugby, frisbee, etc… And for volleyball addicts like me you can hire a court to train for as little as £18/hour. So get your training gear on and try it out this summer!

Yellowave is a really different sport venue, not only is it beach sport orientated but it has a great little licensed bar/café on site if you’re more of a spectator. they host major volleyball tournaments and the Chinese Olympic volleyball team will be using it as their practice ground for 2012. Its a really easy and different day our for the family, the facilities can be rented out and they sometimes have live music events in the bar so check the website.

I ran past Yellowwave the other day from above the arches and looking down toward the sea, I couldn’t quite fully believe what I was seeing. In the week of writing, the U.K. has experienced one of the most violent storms to hit it for many years, and pictures of 60ft waves battering Porthleven in Cornwall attest to its power. So gale 5 – 6 winds were pummeling our own, fair South Coast, whilst at the same time Yellowave can be seen like a beacon through the dark, golden light glowing proudly from it’s floodlights. I was surprised to see that Yellowave was on at all; it was of course, at around 8 o’clock, November, howling winds. But this was not the most surprising thing, because to top it all of, there was actually about 4 or 5 volleyball games taking place. Amazing! So obviously, come rain or shine, or in this case Gale force winds, Yellowave is a brilliant and quirky place to play sport, or just watch and have a coffee.

This is a excellent little stop of for Brighton families as it has so much to offer. Not only does it have sand sports courts where volleyball, beach rugby and bouldering are played, its also a sheltered haven on an often breezy pebble beach with a licensed café. An ideal place to spend a Sunday chilling out at the Barefoot Café with a vino, watching a tournament while the kids muck about in the sand. The only venue of its kind in the UK Yellowave Brighton has played host to many beach sports events such as the British Women’ Volley Ball championship. The venue is also used for live music events ad parties so definitely worth checking out of you have visitors down.

It seems like a strange concept to create an artificial beach next to a real beach. However, Brighton might have a nice beach where you can laze away days in the sun, or have barbeques and drinks come evening, but what our glorious beach is distinctly lacking is the joy of feeling sand between your toes. Alas, the beach volleyball courts offer a great place to enjoy the best of both worlds — being in Brighton, by the sea and not fearing the loss of teeth when you dive for the ball. Unfortunately this isn’t a beach where you can sunbathe, but it is a great place to play sport in the sun whilst simultaneously breathing the fresh sea air. I played volleyball here a number of times this summer and at £18 per court, per hour(including ball hire) you can have a great time with up to 12 people at a really cheap price. Okay, the weather might be heading downhill as I write this, but there have been some glorious days of late that would be perfect for a spot of volleyball. The courts are immaculately kept and the staff are super friendly. If the winds aren’t too high, you can even play under floodlights when the sun has put his hat on. Be sure to book in advance though, it’s a pretty popular place.

Nivea Sun Yellowave is an outdoor beach volleyball venue with six to eight sandy courts available for hire. Alongside the courts is a small café/bar serving snacks and hot food as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Its a great place to chill out and even if you’ve never seen a volleyball — get down and sandy with a group of mates.
