I’m not a massive fan of this pub, but there is pretty limited choice if you just want a drink in the Marina. Like most Weatherspoon’s pubs it is big, loud and generic. There is nothing particularly welcoming about the place and the staff don’t exactly go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. On the plus side, there is some lovely outdoor seating and the prices are cheap!

I was pleasantly surprised by this Wetherspoons. Last time I went in a wetherspoons was at Uni when we used to go just to chortle down jugs of beer and pimms for nada. I would have the occasional Jacket potatoe which was always microwaved but still raw and dripping with melted cheese(I prefer just grated) and it came with a side salad which was either just one piece of lettuce or something else that had started going off. Well here I ordered a Jacket and out came a very nice oven cooked potatoe with lots of cheese(not melted) and a big salad that was fresh AND had a nice dressing on it. I also had the pleasure of eating it out on the deck whilst watching the boats rock in the wind. An unexpected and pleasurable experience.

I’m not generally a fan of Wetherspoons or Wetherspoon-type places, but for some reason I really like The West Quay. It isn’t your typical stainless steel bar and cheaply carpeted kind of place though, in fact it’s really traditional-feeling and full of big, heavy wooden tables and chairs(some are actually thrones) and has something unheard of in most chain pubs… atmosphere! True, the food isn’t great after all it IS a Wetherspoon but it is dirt cheap. I recently went along to the signature ‘Steak Club’ night with the boyfriend and although the steak was thin and FAR too overdone, at about £16 for two generous steak dinners and a bottle of wine neither of us were complaining. The drinks(in true chain-pub style) are immensely cheap and best enjoyed on a summer day, sat on the balcony overlooking all the boats moored in the Marina. It’s an incredibly satisfying juxtaposition to be sat somewhere that feels so classy for such great value.

There’s usually only one good thing about Wetherspoons: it’s cheap. Typical characteristics of pretty much all the ‘Spoons I’ve ventured into include: £1 pints Cardboard value meals Sticky, uncleared tables Resident day drinkers propping up an overcrowded bar The West Quay, however, has none of these traits. It’s clean, warm and(dare I say it), rather pleasant. Despite the undeniable JD chain feel it inhabits, there’s a real ‘ye olde pub’ feel to it and it’s kitted out with a real log fire and hardcore overhead heaters, perfect for sheltering from the cold winter air. And spread over two floors, it’s got balconies and picnic tables overlooking the Marina, perfect for lazy summer days. If ever there was a reason to still like ‘Spoons, the West Quay is it.

Right, I’m going to disagree with the previous reviewer. I’ve been to many a Wetherspoon’s pub(not by my own choice) and have had that familiar feeling of fear, depression and eventual nausea. I don’t feel this place should be marked down or put in the same category as any of those dreadful holes as it hasn’t got anything in common with them in any way what so ever. I’ve been frequenting this place for a long while and up until now didn’t realise it was a Wetherspoons because the food is really good, the bar has a good selection of lagers and real ales and the staff are all friendly and enthusiastic. Its the best place to eat in the Marina without a doubt and to be fair, Brighton can get a bit hectic in the summer so its worth hopping on a bus and grabbing a long lunch here.

West Quay you are a Wetherspoons, so sorry but I cannot give you more than 3 stars! However, this place is worth a mention, being one of the nicer places to head at Brighton’s predominantly dreary Marina. Sit inside where you’ll find local real ales, wooden floors and a friendly pubby, if slightly dark, atmosphere. Alternatively sit outside on a picnic bench(they’ll bring food out too) and look straight out onto the harbour and moored boats — very pretty in the sunshine, this really is the selling factor of this ‘spoons.

This has improved a lot in recent years. For a long time, the Marina was a pretty soulless environment, but as its mature its gained some character, and so has The West Quay. Being Brighton, its not just the yachting set that comes to the Marina, at festival time, and several others throughout the year, its full of performance art, and The West Quay can be similarly quirky. Reliable food, however!

This a very large pub with 2 floors and plenty of seating. It’s also a JD Weatherspoon production, which means the prices are set as the same as other pubs owned by JD. The food is not bad and at a reasonable price. Overall, a good pub when going with a bunch of mates before heading to the town centre.
