The name might suggest gigantic plates piled high with cheap and greasy bacon, sausages, eggs, beans and black pudding but Tommy’s Tucker is actually a cute sandwich shop. Hidden between antique shop Swag and day-glo rave clothes shop, it’s a hole in the wall that serves cheap and filling sandwiches, toasties, panninis and hot drinks to take away or eat at the trio of metal tables. The selection isn’t as varied as somewhere like Toast but there’s still something for everyone from meat eaters to veggies and vegans. I ordered the goats cheese and red onion pannini and was pleasantly surprised by how tasty it was.

I love Tommy’s Tucker! It’s a little hole in the wall but it produces great great sandwiches and paninis for less than anywhere else I can think of! With very little space they have managed to cram in a full kitchen and proper coffee machine so that if you work nearby or are in town to wander you can buy sustenance and a hot drink for under a fiver. On a sunny day you can sit at their metal tables in the little cul de sac that they have made their dominion– just by the antique shop Swag and the end of the Laines. When it’s rainy they have a great bright orange awning to stand under. Brilliant value and loads of choice.

Although finding Tommy’s Tucker isn’t the easiest of tasks, despite its slightly hidden location, just off of Trafalgar Street, this quaint little sandwich and coffee shop manages to attract a sizable number of customers. Indeed, a couple of days ago, whilst the nearby Forfar’s bakery remained completely empty, I found myself patiently waiting in line at Tommy’s, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to purchase one of the enticing looking sandwiches on offer. Once I eventually managed to complete my stated task, I soon discovered why such a queue had formed. The food was great, very appetising, and, most importantly for a student, affordable! Sandwiches retail for around £2, Paninis are slightly more expensive at £3, and there’s a wide range of toppings for both. Try this shop!
