Since I introduced my workmates to this spot, they have refused to buy their lunch anywhere else. These guys know their sanwiches. The granary bread is perfect, the Super anything sandwiches blow my socks off, and they do chilli jam! I opted for the French Connection today(I usually go for the triple decker but decided to stop being such a fatty hah), which includes beef, brie, dijon mustard and I asked them to add some mixed leaves(20p extra). The staff are brilliant, and cater to whatever bizarre request the guys ask for(cheese, mayo AND chilli jam, anyone?!) and are always up for whatever massive order I suddenly throw at them at 2pm on a sunny Tuesday. Great job guys, keep up the good work!

Toast is pretty iconic on the North Laines, but im afraid i’m not so taken with it. I used to be there most mornings picking up buttered toast to nibble on at work(it is great toast so theyve got that spot on). One day I was craving it for lunch instead so went back around 12ish. Apparently getting toast… in toast… after 12 is impossible-they just wont do it for you(which is incredibly annoying). The toasters are still there alongside the bread and butter– and you can have a toasted sandwich… but no toast allowed after the morning. So if you want to actually eat toast at toast– make sure you get there in the morning to avoid disapointment.

Excellent little independent sandwich shop, with a be-musingly varied menu of sandwiches with amusing names. All of which come on white, brown bread, toasted if you want. The quality is superb, service is friendly and causal… definitely the place for lunch in Brighton!

This little café is hidden away in one of the North Lanes quieter streets, but I am so glad about that because the more people that know about it, the harder it’ll be to get a seat, or more appropriately, a sandbag in the window. This is the perfect independent coffee bar that offers a really good quality product, but with the addition of charm and style that are non existent in manufactured chains like Starbucks and Costa. The coffee is one of the best I’ve had in Brighton, as are the healthy organic breakfasts on offer(don’t worry, it isn’t just toast).

Lovely little place serving some very high end coffee and selling some excellent sandwiches. The seating and the whole atmosphere inside sets a really nice ambience. It is a little off the beaten track so midweek there’s usually plenty of space to sit and relax over your lunch/breakfast. I had a lovely tuna and cheese melt sandwich in here that was so filling and will definitely be back for more! Great staff that are happy to natter away or just leave you alone to enjoy your day.

What a Gem. I went in here because I approved of the groovy Ed Hardy esque graffiti on the outside, even though I am not all that find of Ed Hardy, it just looks good here. They have a killer selection of fabulous sandwiches with the secret ingrediant appearing to be the sweet chilli sauce which adds a lovely kick to bites like the Fish Finger Sandwich. This is a nice tucked away sandwich shop with great staff and an imagination for all things sandwich.

Toast may look like some hip place for cool kids from the outside, with its extravagant and purposefully ‘cool’ spray paint flowers, letters and vines, but inside it couldn’t be more the delicate British café, with plenty of coffee, cakes, sandwiches, jacket potatoes… and yes, different toasts. This whole area is a little full of little cafes like Toast, and their attempts to stand out from the crowd can be a little over-the-top. In Toast’s case, their décor is rather eye-catching, and thankfully that charm doesn’t let off when you actually get inside. The prices are dirt-cheap, with plenty of different British lunch-time classics on offer, in particular sandwiches. The collection of possible sandwich fillers is impressive, as is the different options for what to have them on, from toast through to jacket potatoes. There’s also plenty of coffees and teas, so more than enough for the hungry(and thirsty) person on their way into town or up to the station. The main problem here is that there is never anywhere to sit. Plenty of cafes in the area have gone for plenty of space, knowing that Brighton is full of hungry shoppers, angry to rest their weary legs, but the seating here, while looking great, is always chock-full. I normally end up looking hungrily in the window, then walking down the road to one of the equally good places(with less choice) that offers me a seat. Still, with enough space for seats they probably couldn’t recreate their exceptional prices: everything is dirt cheap, which is amazing for the quality and amount of stuff you’re served. A nice little place, but doesn’t have everything you want or need. I’d go for somewhere I can sit any day, somewhere that’s just tasty is always a toss-up.

Tucked away at the top of the North Laines, Toast is one of Brighton’s most distinctive sandwich shops. Whilst the other cafes and shops in the area have been decorated in plain shades, Toast is painted dark grey with colourful flowers and elaborate lettering spray-painted on top. The result is an eye-catching building that’s hard to miss. Inside, Toast is more subtle with a big glass counter, a couple of comfy armchairs and a few tables and chairs. At lunchtimes, there can be queues outside the door but early morning or mid afternoon it’s usually easy to scoop a seat. As for the food, we’re talking fresh and flavoursome sandwiches, baguettes, jacket potatoes and melts made to order. Ingredients range from staples like ham, cheese and bacon to fancier items like dill pickles, roasted peppers, avacodoes and artichokes. I’ve eaten here on at least half a dozen occasions and always left with a smile and a full tummy.

Toast now caters for company lunches and provides free delivery to those based in its neck of the woods(North Laines). The prices compare favourably with the nearby competition: Breakfast Club(crispy bacon, free-range egg, tomato and melted cheddar £3.50); Achille’s Heel(Feta cheese, roasted peppers, olives, watercress and basil £3.00) and a bacom or sausage sarnie(£2.20). Veggie options include veggie nicoise, tuna and falafel and cost £3-£3.50. Drinks range from espresso, cappuccino, latte et a l to fruit smoothies. Oh yes, and they also do toast.

Contrary to the name, Toast doesn’t just sell toast, but a great range of(un)toasted sandwiches, as well as jacket potatoes, salads, cakes and coffee. The menu is extensive — lots of delicious and well thought out sandwich filling combinations, and a create your own option. There’s also a choice of breads. Ingredients always taste good quality, and include continental style preserved meats and cheses, and favourites such as bacon or fish fingers. Prices hover around a very reasonable £2.50.

This place is popular and once you’ve had a sandwich from there you can see why. Lots of tasty combinations and great coffee. There isn’t much seating inside and most people seem to take away. The prices are reasonable but not cheap.
