I like Body Shop products, but my five stars is for the fantastic personal service I received from a brilliant member of staff. Care was taken in ensuring I knew what was in some of the skin care products when I said I’d had a reaction to some of the vitamin C range and also the vitamin E range too. They allowed me to return two expensive serums, without the receipt, as I’d had a reaction when first trying it out and also let me return a body butter I’d received due Christmas at the full price, not the sale price. I think this is great service and I wouldn’t hesitate to return to try more products.

In terms of the stock and the store itself, the Body Shop is just another Body Shop. Expensive bath products and cosmetics. What is so great about the Body Shop, and particularly the Brighton one, is that they do a lot of community work and charitable donations. I organised a fundrasing spa event for a local charity and the Brighton Body Shop supported it by coming along with two members of staff, a whole stall full of stuff and doing free makeovers and giving out free goody bags. I just went in, spoke to Deb the manager, told her what I wanted and they provided. They did a great job, were really helpful and their presence was an excellent addition to my fundraiser.

I am very grateful to Anita Roddick, The Body Shop(although have you ever stopped to think how macabre that name is?!) and the pioneering work of both when it comes to fair trade and commercial/cosmetic ethics. Not to be sniffed at I realise. It’s just that the actual products sold in the shop aren’t as appealing as they used to be when there was much less choice. Now there is acres of choice and body shop stuff seems a bit tacky. all the different scents are sickly, the creams are greasy and the packaging looks a little dated. It needs some sleek re-branding to catch up with new sophisticated customer. The ethics are still there though which I applaud and the prices seem much more reasonable. If you like the smell of the stuff the go for it!

Way before Lush and other cool companies emerged, Body Shop founder Anita Roddick was sourcing and selling beauty products made from natural ingredients. Now a worldwide chain owned by a multi-million cosmetics giant, The Body Shop still sells a great selection of natural products from body butters, moisturisers and soaps to mud and honey face masks. The problem is, the packaging and shop layouts feel a little dated and corporate now. I rarely go in and when I do, I usually leave empty-handed. Another problem is, when do I do go in to buy gifts for other people — the staff usually try to sell me products I don’t want, like lip glosses and tea-lighters. I know it’s company policy to try and sell customers 3 or 4 products but as a customer, its kind of irritating!
