Small pub and a great Sunday roast(I had the vegetarian option)! It is better to book a table in advance during the weekends.

The Sussex Yeoman do a fantastic roast. The problem is, most of Brighton seems to know this now so they are always really busy. Don’t expect to walk in and grab a table at short notice, you need to book a couple of weeks in advance. If you are organised enough to do this, you won’t be disappointed. The roast’s are delicious, varied and locally sourced. Not to mention ginormous! There is a great selection — four meat, two veggie plus two specials, featuring unusual dishes such as venison and pheasant. Sides include a Yorkshire pudding, roast spuds and a good selection of veg cooked al dente. The gravy is good and there is just the right amount and the whole lot is topped with parsnip crisps, adding a delicious extra texture and great seasoning. The puds are also good — I had the sticky date pudding on my last visit. It looked a little dry when it first arrived but it was very tasty and left me satisfied. The only downside to The Sussex Yeoman is that you can feel a little rushed, it’s certainly not the place to wile away a long Sunday afternoon. Because of the huge demand, they book the tables up in two hour slots. After clearing our plates today, nobody asked if we wanted puddings. We retrieved the menus from the bar and decided what we wanted, but it was a little while before we could catch anyone’s eye. When we finally tried to order pudding we were told no as we only had 15 minutes left before the next people would need our table. Telling an 8 and a half month pregnant lady she can’t have pudding is never going to go down well! They eventually moved the next slot on to another table as they had had a cancellation but made it sound like they were doing us a favour, when really they should have taken our pudding order a lot early. Pudding issues and pregnancy hormones aside, this is a very good roast and I would highly recommend giving it a go!

Went for a Sunday roast and was sadly disappointed. They ran out of most the meats but didn’t tell us when sat down. Ended up with chicken which didn’t taste that nice. Vegetables were good tho. Staff were a bit rude I thought. Don’t think I will bother again.

Excellent meal and service. Definitely elevates British food reputation. I had the pollack and bean casserolet dish. Fish was well cooked and not dry. Every dish they brought out looked excellent. I could come eat here everyday.

The best Sunday Roast in Brighton, and actually the best one I have had in my life to date. Granted, I’ve only been in Brighton for half a year now but I have certainly made the Sunday Roast rounds, including to much more expensive gastropubs. I could eat here every single Sunday and never get sick of it. I really can’t rave about it enough! I do recommend you book ahead, and there was one time where the service was absolutely abysmal and resulted in our food taking more than an hour(and thereby pushing back and delaying reservations after us) with no compensation made for the trouble, but luckily that seems to have been a one-off. The desserts and appetizers are also delicious, but if you are having the Sunday Roast you probably won’t have room for these. I had the lamb trio the last time I was there and it was the best roast yet. The only downside is the price.

I was lucky enough to be taken here for lunch by the Unilocal duchess of the Sussex Yeoman, Brix H and her boyfriend The Yeoman is located a very short uphill walk from Brighton station but you may a little difficulty recognising it as the E has fallen off the sign, making it currently the YOMAN! It’s quite cozy inside but Brix had booked a table. Despite its proximity to the station, it was a nice relaxing place to chill and chat. It did get busy later with football fans and we vacated our table so that others could eat There was a good varied menu with some ambitious dishes on there. I was warned that the portions size is generous here and you certainly won’t go away hungry. You know it’s a good menu when it’s really difficult to choose I eventually settled on scallops with black pudding and potatoes served on salad including apple. The portion was huge and while the presentation wasn’t fine dining and certainly wasn’t intended to be fine dining, the combination of flavours was spot on. The scallops were sweet and I appreciated the fact that they had left the coral on — there is so much flavour there. The slightly spicy and deep flavour of the black pudding was the perfect foil and the salad dressing was well judged. Yum This is a pub with a serious kitchen. Recommended!

Great food, shame about the awful Greene King beer.

Easily the best pub food I’ve ever eaten! I’ve eaten at a lot of pubs and the Sussex Yeoman is by far the best! The portion sizes are great but the quality of the food is even greater! The pub itself has nothing that special about it. It’s small and quiet but the food makes up for this by a mile! Would recommend everyone to go here as there is a large selection(for a pub) of main courses so there’s something for everyone. Absolutely amazing!

Superb place. Really friendly, food so good. Just to add to this, I am so surprised this isn’t buzzing. The staff are always very friendly, and the food is excellent, I had an open ravioli there once, divine. And the ciabatta’s they serve are amazing. YOUMUSTTRYTHISPLACE!

I don’t mind this place. It serves a good selection of beer and lager, its clean and comfortable and the staff seem pretty friendly if a little smug but every time I’ve been in here for food, there’s never enough seats and they run out of most things on the menu really quickly. The burgers are really impressive and really tasty but cost around £10. Its a hamburger!!! I’m all up for pubs offering top notch food but think they should try and keep their prices down a little more.

From the outside, the Yeoman might look like any other ale house, but such thoughts would be wholly wrong. Inside you are greeted by an impressive selection of wines and ales, enough to please any potential connoisseur. While this isn’t exactly something to write home about, the food certainly is. Inside the Yeoman, you won’t find reconstituted burgers with a helping of soggy chips. You will instead be given the task of choosing from a weekly menu of locally sourced dishes, combing traditional British cooking with a modern continental influence. This isn’t the cheapest lunch you will ever have, but it is possibly the best one you’ll find in Brighton. The Yeoman would be more at home in trendy North London, not 20 yards from Brighton station’s smoking area. That however, is our gain, and not London’s. If you are searching for a warm meal, this pub won’t be for you. However, if you really want to try good food, then look no further.

Local favourite the Sussex Yeoman is situated close enough to the Station that is convenient and central but hidden enough so that its doesn’t get rammed with tourists in the summer. Its fairly small and quaint with a very traditional vibe. Everyone has their fave roast in Brighton and I have to say the Sussex yeoman keeps coming up. The crowds are very varied and friendly, the pub attracts everyone from student hipsters to olde ale drinkers so its should to suit all tastes.

Just round the corner from my friend’s flat is this little beauty. Claire has been raving about the sunday roasts for a while, and she wasn’t wrong. It says a lot that we were only able to secure a 3.30pm slot when booking a week before! Tasteful décor, fun and relaxed youngish clientelle and some very funny and friendly staff meant we were instantly relaxed in the place, tucked away in a comfy corner. I was half tempted to propose on the spot to the lady who helped clear our table and share a few jokes with us, but I was too hungover. Her loss, I guess?! The roast itself was incredible. One of the best I’ve had. Huge roast potatoes, 5 tasty veg(including some delicious red cabbage), and a yorkshire pud accompanied my roast chicken. Between us we managed to cover most of the meats; pork, lamb, beef, chicken and venison. A quick swap/taste session confirmed that they were all delicious. I think I’d go for the pork next time! We spent a good 30mins in here lazing around and drinking after finishing our meals; both too full to move and incredibly relaxed. Next time I visit friends in Brighton I’m going to insist we head here on the Sunday. Omnomnom.

The Yeoman can be found upon a small incline as you come out of Brighton station and is a warm and inviting traditional pub with a great food. The food can be a tab pricey with the cheapest main course being £11(sausages and mash) but the menu shows a huge amount of craft. They serve up local, seasonal food and even have their meat bought in and hung in the cellar. From here they make choice cuts and created their own sausages called Elles Bells, which you can buy and take home with you. The venison burger is a popular favourite and they also do fish really well, I’ve had the whole plaice and trout and both were delicious. With a huge wine selection and amazing food, you could stay here for hours and the waitresses were lovely and really on it!

The service here is friendly and efficient. The bar is comfortable, if a little drafty if you are sitting near the door. It’s a chatty bar, with music being played on a laptop from behind the bar. It’s the sort of place that if you ask nicely they will let you plug in your ipod and play some of your own stuff. But the best bit about this place is the menu — the chef has been here for some time, and produces some fantastic grub. Most recently I had the home-made soup with crusty bread followed by a potato rosti with the most perfect poached egg on top and a delicious sauce. There are loads of veggie options with plenty for meat eaters too. The wine selection could be better, which is the only reason I’ve not given 5 stars.

A small pub just over the road from the Battle of Trafalgar. It is well known for its food, with good reason, offering a good choice of unusual, often locally sourced foods. I was feeling a little unadventurous when I last visited, and stuck to the fish and chips, but this was delicious — particularly the mushy peas. If you find yourself in here after they’ve run out of food, they don’t mind you nipping over the road to the chip shop for chips to eat in either. The décor is sort of posh traditional — with wooden floors rather than carpets and generally on the simple, cleaner side than some places, but still with a good pubby feel.

Last night(friday 18th December) I was driving up Guilford Road. Had to stop on very icy road, started to just slip down the hill. Could have been a nasty accident. The locals from the pub came out and salted the road, helped me get out, there must have been a dozen of them. I wish I could have thanked you all personally and the Cab driver who gave us a ride to where we were going and refused to accept payment. That’s what Christmas is all about. Marc

The Sussex Yeoman is conveniently situated near to the station and the North Laines and is a great proper Brit pub. Renowned in Brighton for its gorgeous pub grub, the Yeoman offers Sunday roasts, fish and chips ploughman’s along with all the usual deliciousness. You will pay slightly more than usual if dining but its worth every penny. They’re proud of their real ale selection and have national and regional faves. Its slightly hidden up the hill from the main road so is usually packed with locals rather than visitors, but still gets mega busy particularly with after work drinkers.

Good for a quick pop in, or a Sunday Roast the Yeoman is the spot. With a crowd that is as mixed as Brighton itself there is hardly a dull moment here. The pub is a touch small, but its very rare that it is filled to the brim. The well stocked bar has a decent selection of beer, and can make any cocktail you can think of. Try it out for a Pub quiz on Tuesday.
