Sqaure is located in a nice area of town, thankfully for them, there isn’t too much competition. That might sound harsh, and there isn’t a whole load wrong with Square, but there is equally not an amazing amount right with it. One good thing is the 3 course food option, priced at a very reasonable £10.95. My food was totally passable, although a little bit on the lukewarm side. For a lounge to have a drink, I’d definitely recommend Square a bit more. As already mentioned, the location is good, as is the modern and tasteful décor, very leather.

When roaming Western road in search of a decent place to drink you’ll pass many places that will look promising. The décor will be inviting or stylish and you’ll feel like you’d like to be seen hanging around in that sort of place. This is one of those places but unfortunately its price and location will leave you feeling a certain sense of regret. Why didn’t I go somewhere closer to other bars? Why didn’t I go somewhere cheaper? Why didn’t Square Bar deliver like I thought it would? The reason is that it’s simply not what you think. Yes the drinks are great: there’s a wide selection. The staff are nice and the décor is quite stylish, however, you’ll understand what I mean when you’re surrounded by drunk hen night girls and slick, beshirted guys with tightly groomed facial hair and rooster haircuts. It’s not a bad place by any stretch of the imagination. It’s just a shame that it’s been hijacked by the sort of people who think paying too much for something gives you social standing.

As far as drinks selection is concerned the Square bar and restaurant in Hove is more than satisfactory. If you’re after premium cocktails and champagne this is the place for you. However, if you’re a fan of adjectives like refined, subtle and modest then perhaps look elsewhere. There’s nothing bad about the food or drinks but if you’re just popping out for a few quick ones it’s not a place that’ll give you just rewards for the subsequent dent in your wallet. Situated a little too far from the nearest descent pub, Square can often have a rather flat atmosphere but on the weekends it tends to pick up, especially when the hen nights come out to play. The wide variety of beers and spirits could make for an interesting evening but would ultimately only serve to put you in a stupor. I’d recommend Square only for special occasions and bar crawls, as there are many other places nearby that’ll give you just as much bang for not as much buck.

Know the fashion designer Roberto Cavalli? Know that he makes vodka? If you answered yes to question one, I bet question two was still a surprise. If you answered yes to both you’re a smart arse and if you answered no to both, this review is kind of for you. Palmeira Square is a gorgeous location. One of my favourites in Brighton & Hove I’d say. Tucked away in the corner is Square: a bar that stocks said Roberto Cavalli branded vodka. I wouldn’t really have ever noticed Square if I hadn’t been on a hunt with a friend one Sunday afternoon to find somewhere showing the Moto GP. We entered the empty bar and were greeted by a couple of really nice bar tenders. They were both fans of the sport and we entered a long conversation around the race proceedings. We drank a couple of coffees and took in the surroundings. Square is extremely well presented, much like the neighbourhood in which it sits. The bar is stocked with high-end beers, wines and spirits, some of which I didn’t even dare to order for fear of high prices. This place isn’t cheap, but it’s a nice contemporary bar where you feel like you’ve arrived. Come here for cocktails and then go into the city for the big night out, or stay here and enjoy some quality alcohol in a quality venue. Sometimes high prices make you enjoy things more and at Square you get this feeling, but without feeling like you’re being ripped off. I liked it a lot and that was a lazy Sunday afternoon. I will go back and try that Roberto Cavalli vodka, but I will do it on pay day so it hurts less!
