This is a great independent off licence mainly serving the good folk of Hanover their alcoholic tipples. They serve all the expected beers and a fair range of wines. You can always pick up a multibuy deal. There are also a number of more random spirits and suchlike including hemp vodka and a savagely powerful chilli vodka. If you wanted to appear at a party with some random concoction, then this would be a good place to get it. The opening hours aren’t always that convenient and the best time to try your luck is the early evening. Certainly don’t leave it until the later hours to get your booze in. One other bonus is that they frequently have a few cheap beers that are at or just passed best before date and they have never turned out badly for me thus far.

This is a pretty good off licence really, I won’t deny that the lack of a chilled drinks selection means that you unfortunately have to plan your visit, but the selection is pretty fantastic for such a remote place. Why this is Southover Wines, I do not know. While they do sell wine, they sell far more curious and unfamiliar beer and ales, notably Hobgoblin, Arundel and a number of continental choices. Price wise, it could be better, but as I mentioned earlier, such a remote location can probably explain that. I’ve only been here a few times, but this is a far better option than going to one of the nearby shops.

One cold fridge of alcohol for the whole of Hanover, and it’s not even that cold! All the booze is stacked around it on some sort of rotation system that keeps most of it warm-and since the recently sad departure of Threshers, it is the only option. Another confusing aspect of Southover Wine is the opening times, they’re never open when the sun is up and seem to closed relatively early in the evenings-which is a shame. If you do manage to get into the shop at any point, they are some nice organic ciders but as mentioned by previous reviewers you can almost see the cogs turning in the cashier’s head as to what to charge this time.

It’s a real bummer that this is the ONLY off-license in the area. It’s not that it’s terrible– they have everything you expect an offie to stock… lager, cider, wine and a vast array of spirits, but as Ross M. suggests it’s random and confusing… and you kind of feel like they’re making the prices up on the spot. The prices, I should add, always seem inflated too, but that’s par for the course in off licenses, unfortunately. My biggest gripe with this place is that they only have one tiny fridge, meaning the selection of cold beverages is paltry… a few beers and some white wine– that’s it! On the up side they have a good selection of mixers, meaning you don’t have to traipse off elsewhere for juice and lemonade. They also sell Divine chocolate, amongst other sweets and to be honest, that’s what I use this place for most– after dinner chocolate!

Unfortunately, other than this store, there aren’t many places to pick up alcohol on Southover Street, which is annoying, as this shop’s interior is incredibly confusing. You walk in and find yourself greeted by a plethora of alcoholic beverages, no idea of what anything costs, and only a rather confusing list of deals to guide you along. The deals themselves, aren’t particularly amazing either, and one does feel a little overcharged when one leaves.
