Sometimes I like to accompany my boss as she does her shopping. Even though I only work at a hotel during the weekends, I like to visit during the weekday as I can get free food and all the Instant Coffee I need to jump start my day. But as my boss likes to leave the hotel in the afternoon to walk into town, I usually pop by in the afternoon as well, and just follow her around as she does her shopping. This allows me to become familiar with Brighton, and visit stores I normally wouldn’t visit. Purple Heart is one of those stores. My boss needed to buy the things required for a children’s birthday party: the candles, the balloons, table stops, cups, spoons, bags, banners, that sort of thing. Well, Purple Heart had a load to choose from, and everything was pretty cheap as well. My boss left the store with enough items to last 3 birthday parties, and she was happy.

The North Street branch of Purple Heart is much bigger than the original branch on Gardner Street. This hasn’t stopped the owner from filling the shop floor to ceiling with all kinds of kitsch and colourful goodies. Literally every surface, table, shelf and display unit is packed with child-friendly treats. Alongside tie-dyed babygrows, shoes, kids clothes, books and toys, there are fun items like water pistols, bouncing balls, fairy wings, fancy dress costumes, picture books, soft toys, heart-shaped soaps, yo yos and Russian dolls. To help parents with the unenviable task of planning birthday parties, there’s also minature games, playing cards, balloons, banners, party bags and practical items like cake stands, candles and paper plates. The only thing Purple Heart can’t supply you with is boundless amounts of energy, enthusiasm and patience!

I’m sure when parents are planning parties for their children, Purple Heart is the first stop they make. It just has everything you could possibly need, and for reasonable prices. Practical things include cake tines and cupcake stands, icing and sprinkles, paper plates and cups, balloons in every possible colour, confetti, banners, and a party bag service. The huge display of items for party bags was great fun to look through: sweets, tiny ‘connect four’ games, parachuting figurines and plastic jewellery. Children must love shopping here too — It’s also a well stocked toy store: books, stuffed animals, costumes and an impressive collection of classic gag gifts. Plastic dog poo, snake in a can and the squirting flower were a few. This location is less busy(and I think a bit bigger) than the one in the North Laines, so I’d recommend this one if you’re looking for party supplies.

This is the new second branch of local Brighton favourite Purple Heart. This particular branch is more spacious and thus a little less claustrophobic than the North Laine’s Gardner Street branch. Though I’d say the chaos of towering shelves packed with toys and gifts, not to mention wall displays and dozens of things hanging from the ceiling, make the space factor pretty negligible! i reckon this shop must be a kid’s dream, with loads of unique, colourful and cute toys, all chosen to capture the imagination(for adult and child!) — with clothes, stocking fillers, cuddly toys, fancy dress, decorations, books… Unlike many of the Brighton shops aimed at rich yummy mummies, this place seems to cater for a wider range of tastes and budgets. I like the party bag items, where you can get magnetic ladybirds, fortune teller fish and other such gems for pocket money prices!
