One of my favourite galleries. Think they’re something to do with the more mainstream Art Republic. Ink-D is off the beaten track but they’ve got a great little space and an impressive roster of artists… well worth a look if you’re nearby… glass panel in the floor is a nice touch…

This is a decent gallery exhibiting the darker side of illustration, design and fine arts. Although the aesthetic is underground, many of the artists you will find here have long been far from it, such as Stanley Donwood — the illustrator for bazillionaires Radiohead. They get in some big names here and for a reasonably small gallery that’s commendable. The work is very reasonably priced considering, and the gallery has a relaxed and laid back vibe which helps you to chill out and enjoy the work, which in itself is luscious and holds interest as often it is stuff that has spread its tentacles further afield than much traditional fine art. The curators here must know what they like and know how to present it.

If you could cram all of Brighton’s local artists, talent and nutty minds and into one space, Ink’d would be the place to do it. Although I do have to admit that initially I thought Ink’d was a tattoo shop, simply because the gallery shares its name with the original A&E series, but to my surprise and glee what I found was a fantastic new artistry. Papered with local artists that range from Pop Art to Mix Media, Ink’d is candy for the creative eye, and with a sale of %10 going on now why not stretch the Winter pockets for a little art? One of my personal favorites was the Black Foam core in the bathroom that was painted with Hotdogs, Skulls and Birds… so up my alley! Prices do vary, but generally things do cost a pretty penny, but when you have Jesus on a saucer dish with the words«I Love Satan» how could you say no? Make sure to check upstairs for the £5−15 deals, and art cards. You’ll be sure to find something that tickles your creative fancy! P.S… try and catch an opening too, details on the website

Tucked between a Tattoo parlour and a hairdressers, Ink_d at the bottom of North Road is easy to miss but worth seeking out if you want to discover original, innovative art that doesn’t come with an eye-watering price tag. Among the featured artists at the moment are Stanley Donwood(lino prints from Radiohead’s backroom boy), Carrie Reichardt aka The Baroness(subversive ceramics) and Eine and Zeus(typographical troublemakers responsible for the unmissable mural on the corner of Gardner Street and Church Street). Arranged on three compact floors, the gallery is currently holding a studio clear out, which is great opportunity to pick up some bargain limited edition prints. The clear out runs until February 21.

I think this gallery did use to be a tattoo parlour! I love that this gallery puts urban and graffiti art up on the wall to be admired, but without turning it into a staid, detached object. The whole atmosphere of the place is approachable and interesting and the prices are surprising– they do head up into the thousand plus mark but you can also pick up some amazing original pieces and limited edition prints for hundreds rather than thousands. I don’t know anything about this category of art, except that I’m interested to learn more, and I certainly felt like I learnt more in this gallery… without feeling intimidated or stupid. They have a great website as well, which tells you more about the artists and the different shows they have coming up.

This tiny little gallery could be mistaken for a tatoo shop due to its size and name but once through the doors you’ll find an amazing collection of modern artwork to suit all tastes. The gallery host exhibitions solely of local artist for example at the moment ‘Made in Brighton’ is demonstrating the talent from the surrounding area. Priding itself on offering collectable affordable art the gallery has its own print studio in the basement as well as providing original work. If your interested in urban art or graffiti then Ink_d is definitely worth a ponder, or even if you looking for an unusual piece o perk up your living room, Ink_d has something for everyone.

Awesome local gallery that specialises in urban, underground and graffiti art. The curators — Dan and Jenny — are passionate about what they do and put on interesting exhibitions by local and national artists. As well as group shows, visitors have seen solo exhbitions by Peter Blake, Dan Baldwin, James Kauty, Stanley Donwood, Richard Heeps and Ben Allan. All the work is for sale and there’s a second, smaller space upstairs with a mix of ceramics, limited edition screen prints and mixed media pieces. If you want to find out about forthcoming shows and private views, join the Ink-d mailing list. Also check out their bigger, more commercial, sister gallery — artrepublic on Bond Street.
