The salads here are TOP. Get the mix of everything — you won’t regret it. It’s a huge portion and really delicious. The gluttony sandwich is also spectacular. Staff were great, super speedy, polite and cheerful despite how busy they were. It’s small but there is some outside seating which is fab for people watching when it’s sunny. Been back 3 times now so it must be good!

I have no words to adequately describe the American potato salad from here. It’s just ridiculous. We got the aforementioned salad, greek salad, lasagne and a pasty and oh my word, it was all so delicious. It tasted like they’d added a homemade vinaigrette to the American salad as well which just made it taste incredible. I have a thing for salads and this place goes way beyond any expectations I’d have for a deli. Easily my favourite place for food in Brighton.

We only popped in for a cold drink during the morning. Was nice to see that they had Stowford Press & Sanpelegrino drinks. The seating outside is a bit hit and miss. The table we sat at had three chairs around it, but 2 of them didn’t look that safe and you were left to balance on them just in case.

As far as I know, this place has been on Gardener Street for ages, and I have walked past it many many times. On Sunday however, it caught my eye as the shop front has had a bit of a revamp. I had a peek in the window and saw some amazing look Mac and Cheese, but Scott wouldn’t let me stop and buy some… … So today I was in town on my own, and I had Mac and Cheese on my mind. Off to Hell’s Kitchen I went. A portion cost £4 to takeaway and my word it was HUGE! I brought it home with me so I could stuff my face whilst watching RuPaul’s Drag Race. I still haven’t managed to eat it all. Considering there is so much there, you’d expect the quality to be a little lower, but nope they haven’t compromised! I’ll be heading back there soon — I spotted some Lasagne there that has my name on it.

Aptly named, drawing, as it does, on the Noo Yoik deli theme. Mega cheap jacket potatoes(never my thing) and all manner of subs, sarnies & coffees with deli ingredients: Smoked salmon, lutkas, chorizo & the like… groovy North Laine location too. I did think the coffee was a little bitter though.

I’ll concur with hartingale on this. You certainly get a friendly local welcome from Donna and Michael Rix-Martin. The family has run this place since the 1950s and today they are proudly flying the St George flag which is about as Noo Yoik as Max Miller. For many years it was known as Deb’s Deli named after the former matriarch — and it has always served no-nonsense fill-yer-boots grub. It also provides outside catering and buffet food from £4.50 a head. I am a staunch admirer of Greggs, but it doesn’t hurt to support the home team occasionally.

Hell’s Kitchen is a great little place for a grab-and-go lunch. If you can eat wheat, that is. Full of great-looking sandwiches, pasties, cheesy pastries, pizza slices and the like, I usually dismiss the place unless I have a craving for a good-sized, reasonably-priced jacket potato. This café undeniably has a great location, smack-bang in the middle of the ever-popular North Laine. Seeing as a jacket potato isn’t the greatest snack to eat whilst walking, I normally only go here when it’s warm enough to sit outside and absorb the bustling world around me. Or when I just REALLY want a cheese ‘n’ bean-laden jacket.

Tuna sweetcorn and egg mayo just doesn’t cut it in this crazy world anymore. If you want to compete with the big boys, you need all kinds of cheese, cured meats and breads, to cater for the increasingly sophisticated customer. It’s all a bit of an illusion, of course. People like to think they’re more sophisticated because they’re having the pastrami ciabatta with dill cucumber and dijioniase, but actually it’s just beef-mustard. But you can’t complain about the diversification of the lunchtime menu, even if it can be rather insubstantial once you scratch fro surface. Hell’s Kitchen is one such place that deals in smokescreens, presenting itself as a typical downtown New York deli, specialising in hot salt beef and potato latkes. Really they’re an above-average sandwich stop, but one worth going back to. There’s also a range of pasties — including pasties, sausage rolls, samosas and spicy Jamaican patties. Its location on Gardner Street means the queues can grow, but the service is brisk and friendly.

Hell’s Kitchen is very, very cool: a self-styled ‘New York Deli’ with plenty of choice in their lunchtime offerings, ranging from lovely little sandwiches and the like to pasties, samosas, mini-pizzas… anything of that ilk you can think of is on offer here, and everything tastes great. It’s also surprisingly cheap: a great place for a lunchtime getaway, if always packed thanks to it’s North Laine location and popularity. Still, worth the wait: the food is scrum and very cheap! It’s an amazing selection, when you take a closer look. What looks from the outside like sandwiches and the like is actually far greater: sausage rolls, pasties… the list is endless, and a nice mixture of classic British as well as some other cultural delicacies. I’m not sure where the ‘New York Deli’ fits into this, but still: a great selection of offerings, with nearly everything under a fiver! Add to that great, quick service, cold beer to take with you, and you have one of my favourite sandwich shop-style places in town. The only issue here really is how long it takes to get served: the curse of the popular Brighton business strikes again! However, there really is little like this elsewhere: nowhere else has the mixture of offerings, or the prices: worth the wait in my book!

I would have to agree that this isn’t quite a New York deli, but then most ‘Italian’ restaurants are owned by people from Leicester(example, not every single one of them…) They offer a decent selection of food; beyond sandwiches, you can get a very good wrap choice, along with homemade samosas, burritos and pasties etc. I would say about the latter of pasties and co, that they are really quite expensive, coming in at about £2 each. None the less, this is a good and reliable deli, it isn’t trying to sell you a lettuce leaf for £5, instead offering food you know and like.

I do love this place but not too sure it can call itself a New York deli as it really is just a good bakers in my book. The sausage rolls here are the best in town — without a doubt! Also try the cornish pasties and the pizzas. The staff are always really jovial in here and happy to advise on any new creations they have come up with. This place attracts a huge amount of people around lunch times so either get there early or be patient! Its worth the wait.

There’s nothing really hellish about this kitchen. It’s a delightful place where friendly customers interact with the friendly wait staff in a friendly environment. It was a pleasant experience for me as all I did was sit near the window and watch people walk up and down North Laines as they pointed at the various shops on the street. After I finished enjoying my Chicken Sandwich and cup of coffee, I stared off into space and contemplated serious matters in a very serious way for an ungodly amount of time. I’m sure that I received some looks from other patrons, as I was just some guy near the window who was staring at the floor for what must have been 20 straight minutes. But Hell’s Kitchen provides an environment where one can do that sort of thing. Thank you Hell’s Kitchen for providing me with an environment where I could reflect on my life!

The name Hell’s Kitchen might conjure images of Gordon Ramsay cursing, screaming and throwing plates at trainee chefs. This particular HK however, is a quiet and friendly deli that attracts a constant stream of locals and tourists. They serve quiches, sausage rolls, samosas, latkes, burritos, homity pies and a long menu of fresh sandwiches, baguettes, rolls and foccacia. Last time I was in, I noticed a stream of customers ordering the hot salt beef but as a recent convert to meat, I’ve yet to try it myself. With a handful of tables outside, Hells Kitchen is a great place to grab lunch and watch the world go by. My only grumble is some of the products in the windows aren’t the most appealing looking. In fact, if a friend hadn’t suggested meeting there last year I might never have stepped through the door.

The window display is enough to make your mouth or any part of your body water. They have a great range of calorific snacks and pastries to eat hot or cold. Perhaps an oven would make for a crispier and all the more delicious eating experience, however, I have yet to try this out on the Cornish pasty which is my favourite in the local vicinity. Ultimately satisfying but not satiating.

The name could be considered a tad misleading and far from hellish calorific carbed-up creations, they make the best in fresh healthy bites. If the options on offer don’t particularly grab, the nice ladies that work there have no problem with crafting together your own combinations. There are so many good things to engulf here but I can’t go in without purchasing a slice of delicious spinach quiche. A great place to stop off and have a bite if you’re busying yourself in and around the North Laines, nice fresh food with plenty of choice.

The food here is yummy and Hells Kitchen provides takeaway options in contrast to the many neighbouring cafes. Rolls, baguettes and sandwiches are all made to order and between £1.80 and £4.20 so really great value, and they pretty much let you make up your own filling too if you’re a fussier eater, or feeling a bit adventurous. The best part though is the fresh pastries in the window — you’ll find quiches, sausage rolls, pasties, latkes, burritos and samosas, as well as more unusual creations. They do jacket potatoes too if you do fancy sitting in. The only downer is that the pastries aren’t served hot and if you ask for this, they’ll microwave them making that crispy pastry all soggy — definitely better cold!

Hell’s Kitchen is the place to go if you’re in the North Lanes, feel peckish and don’t have the time for a lazy lunch. First and foremost a takeout deli-style sandwich bar, Hell’s Kitchen make their lunch time treats to order with good, fresh ingredients and a selection of breads. They don’t mess around, they’ll build you a serious sandwich that almost satisfies American deli standards! Okay so maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but this is one of the best sandwich places I’ve found and the prices are really reasonable. It’s also a great place to pick up a bagel with cream cheese if you’re in need of a breakfast on the go. What I reeeeeeeeeally like about this place are the homemade goodies in the window… all sorts of delicious deli bites and savoury pastries call out to be enjoyed. The spinach slice is really good and there’s also samosas, quiches, pasties and more. If you’re in need of extras they have all the best flavours of Kettle chips and a fine selection of interesting fizzy drinks. The staff are really chilled and friendly and will accommodate all sorts of weird create your own requests!

The goodies on offer in this deli do actually transport me to a side street in New York– the eclectic mix of foods, the hunger friendly portions, the low prices and smiley staff. They sell classic American deli food like bagels and cream cheese, pastrami sandwiches and American snacks like oreos. The great thing about Hell’s Kitchen is that alongside those they also sell amazing samosas, sausage rolls and great rostis. The fried foods here are delicious but if you are looking for something a little healthier for lunch then you can have a sandwich made up with some of their fresh ingredients. They also have incredible homemade carrot cake.
