When I was young my mother wouldn’t let us get cereal variety packs because, she said, they were too expensive. So when I saw a packet in Cheepers I just had to get it but I’m not sure if they were really much cheaper because I didn’t get a receipt and anyway had got too distracted by the other bargains to notice or care. That’s how it works with discount shops but I still felt I’d done ok coming home with 6 farm eggs(69p) and cut price washing powder(£1.89). There was a surprising amount of foodstuffs — tea, coffee, sugar, pasta and alot of packet buns and cheap milk, 79p for two litres I think. For them, it’s brilliant and for us consumers I can’t complain — there’s always something cheaper in Cheepers!

I love what these people have done with the shop name. Not only does it connote the discount aspect of the store, but it is also reminiscent of birdsong, particularly the sound of the budgie.(Yes, I know you’re wondering where I’m going with this, but stick with me.) This fact is not really worth noting on its own, but when you discover that the plastic bags they provide are yellow… well, I think it says it all really. Shop name deeply appreciated, I couldn’t wait to see what lay inside. Cheepers turned out to be a higgledy piggledy mass of cheep, er, I mean, cheap stock. As my eyes scoured the walls, I soon discovered Werthers Original Chocolates in milk chocolate for a mere 99p. Snatching the last packet, I over-excitedly exclaimed«look!» to my sister, who was buried in the sweet section, and managed to persuade her that I had indeed found a bargain, as these chocolates usually retail for over £2. Yellow bag, 50p mix-up and a bag of Werthers Originals later, and I was happy, happy, happy. Almost cheeping, some might say…
