One of the most visually inspired animated films I have seen, the work of American artist Martha Colborn, was on show here earlier this month as part of the Danse Macabre exhibition. Catalyst is housed in an old industrial building in College Court, an obscure area of no-mans land between an old Belfast Tech building and the main Victorian building across the way. The exhibition space itself is classic urban ware house, where the light streams in through big paned window and reflects from white washed brick walls into a large bare room worthy of a film set. The approach isn’t exactly salubrious and there are quite a lot of steep stairs to climb but it is well worth the effort. Also I got a friendly welcome from the girl minding the exhibition who seemed genuinely pleased at the appearance of an appreciative visitor. Altogether Catalyst is much more approachable that it may seem at first glance, for the publicity makes it seem a shade inaccessible.
