Always popped in here for a drink on the way back to where were staying. My partner never realised that I had the sat-nav set to go this way EVERY day LOL. How could I miss a pint of Thirkstone Black. Wonderful view sitting outside. Watching cars using the Struggle to Ambleside and back. We never ate here so cannot comment on the food BUT seeing what was being served to other visitors, it looked scrumptious. Service can be a little slow at peak(yeh, I know, it is at the top of the pass) times but, so what. It is only a small bar. Loved the place and will be back on our next trip up to the Lakes.

Can’t attest to the food but we stopped here on a long road trip and had a beer. This pub is so authentic. The bar was built in 1496, their is a peet fire burning and union jack’s flying. It was the perfect stop on a chilly afternoon.

We stayed here this same week 5 years ago & stopped by today. It hadn’t changed much at all which isn’t surprising considering how long it’s stood here. When we stayed the room was comfy & nice & the proprietor John made us very welcome. Recently seen him on tv on a documentary about the lakes. The pub has no mains electric or gas but the lights never flicker once. Nice big car park used by walkers to take to the hill. The pub is supposedly haunted but we didn’t experience anything & it was Halloween when we stayed!

This pub is an great location at the top of The Struggles, the road down from the Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside. There are great views from here and good walking from the carpark. The pub itself is cosy, welcoming and traditional. It’s not too busy or too empty and children will be kept entertained while you’re drinking your pint or hot chocolate by the collection of decorative objects and curiosities which is more bizarre than most pubs and has obviously been worked on over many years.
