Growing up in Hong Kong, I remember going to Il Colpo with my mom. I remember it being a glamorous salon where women, sometimes even Hong Kong movie stars would come here to get their hair done. My mom goes to one stylist and even to this day she see’s the same stylist. I think that speaks volumes since she is very picky with her hair. Needless to say, the people at Il Colpo has watched me grow up. Upon attending high school I would only be in Hong Kong during summer vacations and whenever I would go to Il Colpo, everyone would gasp at how tall I’ve grown or big I’ve gotten. My mother was always happy whenever she was at Il Colpo and I find it to be true for me too. Growing up, Il Colpo was located on the 2nd floor of the Grand Hyatt hotel, they have now moved to Pacific Place. Usually salons have weird lighting. Not Il Colpo. The minute you walk in, it is star treatment. People take your jackets, and gets you your choice of beverage. People come say hi and talk to you about your life recently. Stern, exclusive stylists walk around with serious hair business on their minds for their clients. It is all a very busy and chaotic atmosphere but for some reason also a place where one would enjoy hanging out. Magazines up to the latest gossip columns are spread out before you. If you don’t feel like socialising, stick your nose in it and no one will bother you. With all that said, I guess the most important part is the technique they use to cut your hair. In all the places I have been to, growing up in California, China, Canada, there is NOTONE salon who gets it right ALLTHETIME. Except for Il Colpo. Dick Chan is my moms stylist and is now mine. He’s consistent. He knows what you want. He will not lie to you if your style of choice is not achievable but instead he will suggest to you what he thinks would work best for your situation at that time. I find him to always be right. I always walk out happy with my hair and isn’t anyone who can cut my hair like he does. Magic hands I call it. There’s a reason why my mom sticks with him and there’s a reason why the friends I introduce him to always go back. Price wise it is steeper than your average salon so don’t expect it to be inexpensive. For what it’s worth, I go back every three months even when I’m living in Hong Kong. I used to have to wait a year before I can get my hair perfectly fixed by him. So if you want a good, lasting haircut that will grow out beautifully, try Il Colpo and ask for Dick Chan.
