I had lunch here today and it was very good. Beef, fries, house wine, a bica for dessert. It’s very much a local place — everyone knew everyone else, folks were introducing their babies around — and the atmosphere was great. I look forward to going back for dinner.

Veremos.

My wife and I went for lunch at this place after we had read the review from April this year. The restaurant was rather empty at lunch. This is quite normal I think. We have walked past numerous empty ones during the day. Most places come to life in the evening when the temperature is a bit lower. Back to the food. We each had a different fish so we could share and thus taste both. We agreed that both fish dishes were very tasty, and surprisingly, the two fish tasted totally different. This proves that the fish is prepared in such a way its individualality comes to the fore, instead of it having been smothered in sauces or spices. Finally the cost. I challenge anybody to find a place for lunch serving this level of quality at such a low price. And by the way, the waitresses were extremely helpfull.

Restaurante Carmar is kind of a non-descript local restaurant in the Baixa section of wonderful Lisbon… a place you could walk by and not even notice. But that would be a mistake. Sometimes people forget about the awesome eating spots in Baixa because it lies directly in between the fabled quarters of the Alfalma and Chiado. But this inexpensive restaurant which serves tourists and locals alike is one to put on your list. The food is very, very good. The flavorful Carne-de-Porco-Alentejana I consider their specialty — it’s a perfect melding of so many food sensations. It’s the best rendition of this famous dish that I’ve ever eaten. Order a salad with it and some awesome Portuguese wine and you just can’t go wrong for dinner here. But as good as the food is here … the highlight of Restaurante Carmar was the waiter. Yes, the waiter! The young guy who was the waiter. I think is the best waiter I’ve ever had in my life. He was totally charming, informative, and beyond competent. I watched him work all the tables in the whole restaurant … and the bar area as well. He had everyone smiling… I mean every single person. And he noticed everything … my teabag dripped a couple of drops of tea on the table … he was there to quickly wipe it up. A lady left a bag behind on the floor … he pointed that out to her before she was out the door. A solitary local guy drinking shots of whiskey at the bar got a reassuring pat on the shoulder as he passed by. Every city in the world should borrow him for a couple of weeks just to experience his charm. I think this waiter’s name was Miguel Ruben.(I’m not sure). But what I do know is… If you’re in Lisbon … don’t miss him. He’s the best waiter in the entire world!
