The chicken was good. Everything else was meh. Given that everything on this main restaurant strip seems touristy with menus being shoved in your faces in different languages, this one was much more low key and off on a side street. We were specifically looking for the rotisserie style portuguese chicken and this one was recommened in Lonely Planet. There seemed to be another one with a menu hawker on the main street too. A little intimidating as it’s no frills and dim lighting. The whole chicken for was 10,50 € and you can get sides of «vegatables» such as french fries(frozen and greasy), creamed spinach(avoid), and salad(looked dangerous). When you sit down(which I have learnt is a common practice) they give you bread, dry cheese and butter, and cod cakes. Each will cost you money. The bread was 0,55 € and the butter was something like 0,30 € each. If you eat it, costs you. If you leave it or ask for it to be removed, they will not. EACH of the cod cakes costs 1,55 € not all four. And they seemed like they had been sitting there for a while with the oil soaked through. Come here for the chicken and some wine. That´s about it.

This restaurant, Bomjardim, is easy to find. It’s immediately to the east of Praca de Restauradores, and the little side street, or travessa, which feeds into Rua das Portas de Santo Antao, THE street for restaurants and«menu hawkers,» will put you right in front of this restaurant, which is on a corner. Bomjardim is more low-key. They are not as aggressive and a little friendlier than are the others on Santo Antao once they have you in the door. It is also known as «Rei dos Frangos,» or «the King of Chickens.» Unlike many restaurants which feature seafood, and you can get seafood here, Bomjardim is best known for its rotisserie styled chickens constantly being attended to … and awaiting a spot on your table and in your stomach. It is a Lisbon institution. The presentation is very typical of the area, with accompaniments such as roasted potatoes and vegetables. I will say that the chicken is good. Roasted chicken requires some patience to find the prime pieces you will devour first and then leave you in dismay over what you couldn’t reach. So many of us have become spoiled by boneless chicken breasts. For those folks, this is not your kind of place. For others who want roasted barbeque styled chicken, you will like it. Also, the price /quality /quantity ratio is very fair. I’m giving it about a 3.75, which is basically a 4.
