Authentic Portuguese food. Excellent service. Very simple place but the food is great. Someone local pointed us here since we were looking for authentic Portuguese food and we were not disappointed. Fish is very fresh.

Small place that was really busy. Authentic Portuguese food. Tuna steak was very fresh and perfectly grilled. Fried rabbit came with some clams and fresh cut fries and was very tasty. Cubes of chicken with fries was grilled. Little light on the flavour, but good.

This was a nice little find on the backstreets close to tour Air BnB. We called ahead just to make sure they had availability and told us to come on in. The staff and in particular are waiter was extremely friendly. Although the menu was in Portuguese, our waiter was able to explain everything in perfect English. The restaurant itself has a small old family feel– nothing fancy. Good wholesome food without being spectacular. The menu has lots of fresh fish. I was recommended the local white fish with Portuguese potatoes which was excellent. The whole meal including bottle of wine came to only € 30. #dealcentral

3 star for the food + 0.5 star for the ultra friendly service I walked and walked up more hills to get to Antigo 1 de Maio. I am not even sure what they serves but my Unilocal app told me that it is decent and serves Portuguese cuisine at a reasonable price. And my Google map gave me directions to get there but did not warn me about the uphill«battle» for me to get here. Antigo 1 de Maio is warm and welcoming. We were given a Portuguese menu that I have no idea what I was looking at aside from vinho and cerveja. So we ended up asking our waiter what’s good to eat and ordered what fresh. Grilled Fish of the Day and Sausage of the Day were both good. Simple and homey. Not a culinary experience but a taste of what locals eats here day to day. The friendly waiter even gave us suggestion for another local restaurants for some more meat dishes for dinner.

Best friend and I had gotten to the point in our travels where we were relying less on meticulous Google and travel book searching, and more on our noses and gut instinct. That’s when we walked past Maio. Feeling the thrill of a gamble, we walked in and found the venue completely full, with a small queue of diners waiting to be seated. We took this as a good sign. And rightly so. Our servers were beyond accommodating and friendly. And the food! The whole fish I ordered was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and sans once-frozen disintegration, of course. And even the boiled cabbage was tasty — especially after I learned from our spunky waiter how to use olive oil to really spruce up the flavor of those greens(sorry, Asian, and I’m an olive oil n00b). Everything was absolutely delightful, beginning to end. I will be going back, the next time I’m in Lisbon.

Knowing how late things typically get going in Lisbon, we were so relieved to find this taverna that served dinner early at 7pm. We had been walking all day and were exhausted. But we couldn’t, for the life of us, find a place that was open for dinner. After walking around for what seemed like an hour, we just happened to walk past this restaurant and were immediately seated(perhaps snaggin the last table in an already jam-packed restaurant). We were seated next to fellow English speakers(a British family) and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The bacalao(salt cod) dish was probably the best dish although for cod, I thought it was slightly tough. The John Dory was ok but we didn’t expect it to be fried(but at least the meat wasn’t dry). It was served with mashed bread(which was an acquired taste). The sea bass entrée was not a hit. Not at all what we were expecting. Turned out to be really thin with lots of bones. But the wine was good and the prices were fairly reasonable. They must get lots of tourists because the waiters all spoke pretty good English. Cash only.

A Portuguese colleague took me to this place, which he described as a typical taverna. It definitely felt very local to me. It was reasonably priced, and I would go again. The wait staff were great, too. I recommend the salted cod — it was one of my favorite meals in Lisbon. The apps we got –tempura veggie and overly-oily clams, were unimpressive.

Disso tenho a certeza.
