Since moving here from New York, my husband and I have been on a search for a little taste from home and stumbled on Tony’s — I mean, «NYC» is in the name of the establishment, how bad can it be? We are not bagel experts by any means, but this is as close as it gets in Amsterdam! Tucked away in a busy shopping complex, carry out service is quick and friendly at Tony’s — we actually prefer to order a mix of 10 bagels(for 9 €) and a tub of cream cheese(I believe it’s 3 € each — skip the honey walnut, chives are your best bet). Not only is this a cheaper option compared to ordering off the menu, but the trick is to go home, slice each bagel in half and freeze them in plastic baggies; when you want a fresh bagel, simply take one out and slip each half in the toaster — good as new! I know they sell frozen bagels as well, but I’ve been so used to freezing my own fresh ones so why mess with a good thing?

Don’t come here for the healthy choices: there are virtually none. It can also be very noisy, especially when it’s busy and the espresso machine is hissing like a steam train. No, the reason to come here are the sinfully cream cheese laden bagels that have just the right consistency. New York it’s not, the hundreds of bikes outside the window attest to that; but take the food at its own merits without useless comparisons and you will enjoy whatever is on offer.

The service was fine, order at the counter and they bring it to your table. They have a nice mellow music selection, perfect for this type of place; especially on a Sunday. I ordered a BLT on an everything bagel. The bagel was rather stale, but that was the least of my problems. The bacon could have been crispier in my opinion, but they for some reason decided to put honey-mustard sauce on it: a terrible combination which was not mentioned on the menu anywhere. Ruined my meal.

After a proper work out(well sort of) you need a bagel to recover.(I am pretty sure it’s a statement uttered by some health expert. No? Oh well moving on.) So i had me pumpernickel bagel with pastrami and ate it too. Quite nice although i had to get over my disgust for bugs, one was staring at me with his dead eyes from a rocket leaf, how rude. In all fairness it was dead. But still, don’t stare while i eat! I don’t see how different and/or better it is from say Bagels & Beans. It seems equally good/bad pending on what you expected. Good enough though for a quick stop, but not one i would remember let alone recommend.

I love this place to sit and do some work. My favorite part is that they offer«American filter coffee» with 1 euro refills — feels like being back in my favorite studying café in Vancouver… Lots of seating, plugs, and free wi-fi, and you’ve got a whole bunch of shops in the area if you suddenly feel the need for knitting needles, a bottle of whiskey, some vitamin C or groceries for the evening. The food here is OK, I’ve had much better bagel sandwiches elsewhere, but it’s decent and affordable.

In my never-ending quest to eat cheesecake, I came to Tony’s Bagels based on a fellow Unilocaler’s recommendation. As a café, it is a lovely place to sit, grab some coffee and have lunch. I will have to come back! Food: 3⁄5 I had cheesecake and a cappuccino, and the cheesecake was a classic NY style cheesecake but isn’t anything to write home about. Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to try the bagels but they did look very good and there was an impressive collection of lunch options. I would recommend this place for a cheap lunch or coffee. Service: 4⁄5 The staff is friendly and nice. Best part is that there is free wifi, so you can get some food, sit down and rest your weary feet. It is also very close to the Gassan Diamonds building, so you can swing by there before or after! I stayed until they were closing and they were even polite about kicking me out. Atmosphere: 4⁄5 There is plenty of seating and also window seating, so it is a great place to people watch. Value: 5⁄5 The sandwiches range between 4 – 6 euros and that is a pretty reasonable price. The bagels were huge.

I am such a fan of Tony’s NY City Bagels! I have been passing up on this place for years, must I say big mistake! The food here is great! Don’t let the simple appearance of this bagel shop fool you into believing that it’s not great. I came here for lunch and I loved every bit of it. So nice when the simple things can put a smile on your face. Unfortunately, they don’t have Gluten free bagels but they have an amazing Gluten Free Tuna Salad for people with Celiac. Travelers who are on a budget I would encourage you to hit up this spot for lunch, it’s amazingly cheap as well.

I used to love going to H&H when I lived in Manhattan. But now its pretty easy to find a decent bagel all around the US. Come to Europe and it gets a bit more difficult. In Amsterdam though there are quite a few choices. Village, Bagels & Beans, Gary’s and more all have some great bagels available with tasty toppings. They prove its possible to have a bagel done right on this continent. Unfortunately the place with the most American name has the worst versions of bagels I have tasted. The coffee is ok, but its hard to go wrong on that. For a bagel, you might be better off with a bag from Albert Heijn.

I love it there! I always take a cappuccino, and still love it. The bagels and sweet stuff are also great!

From the outside, it may not look like the most cozy place, but the atmosphere inside is really nice. Very good coffee and a nice and helpful staff helped us to have a nice time there. The bagels looked good, though we didn’t try them.
