Get the hutspot. I am told this is authentic regional food, so who am I to question? sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere. We loved this place. A place you might should visit twice during your trip?

Nice little restaurant in the area. Service is fast and friendly. I ended up getting the combination plate because I couldn’t decide between them. The Hutsput was probably my favorite, but I’ll echo other people, the sausage is the star here. Great flavor, not overly salty.

Had my best Dutch meal experience by far here. Great food and funny friendly staff. My favorite is hutspot but I guess the combination dish is the best choice. They serve Dutch wine here. Which is rare but I prefer the trappist beers. Where the dubbel is my favorite. Know that tips are appreciated though some tourist guides might tell you differently. It’s not mandatory as in the US but a round up to max 10 euro is truly appreciated.

Unilocalers are the best. Followed the Unilocal reviews to this place called The Pantry, where they served the traditional Dutch dish of mashed potatoes with carrots and ground beef mixed in called hutspot. They also had one with kale mixed in and one with sauerkraut, which I quite liked. The other dishes we got were a shepherd’s pie-like dish with cauliflower, pea soup with rye bread and bacon, goat cheese croquettes, and for dessert, vlaflip(custard, yogurt, and fruit syrup mixed together), and poffertjes(fluffy pancakes with powdered sugar). The food felt so home-y and was so good. All the food came out piping hot. Service was also amazing. Oh, and the menu comes in multiple languages(including English) so that was helpful for my boyfriend and I. I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re looking to try some good Dutch home cooking in a cozy spot.

Authentic Dutch food. Excellent beer. Accommodating and friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Great décor. Not very noisy, you can keep a conversation in normal voice. What’s not to like! I am not sure why it is in the category of modern European restaurants. In my opinion it belongs more into the traditional Dutch, which is a big plus in my eyes.

A fabulous local Dutch café. We have a limited palate now due to no red meat and I don’t even eat cheese but let me tell you … There is cheese fondue and meat and mashed potatoes galore Ask the lovely server for a sample of their dill pickles and mini pickled onions. Heaven! There creamy mustard soup sounds bizarre but it was a delicious tangy treat. The shrimp cocktail is like no other with a cocktail sauce more like tangy 1000 Island dressing. There is also a wonderful shrimp croquette. Our friend ate traditional Dutch oven dishes heavy with mashed potatoes, veg and meat. Even mashed potatoes with sauerkraut and ham and blended together. Great staff, great food and wonderful atmosphere. Try the local beer«Brand» — it s the local Heineken. Our server gave us local tips and was a delight.

Came here on a whim, wound up having the best meal and experience we could have asked for. Very hospitable even though we were under dressed and out of our element. Thank you so much for making us feel at home and serving us a hot, freshly made meal! Best first impression of Amsterdam we could have asked for! Love, the girls in rain jackets and running clothes.

This place is popular! There’s no denying that. Grabbing a last-minute seat for dinner on a Wednesday evening was not possible. So, I returned between meal-times the following day to see what the fuss was about. I still don’t get it. The service was quick and very friendly. No complaints there at all. I ordered the set menu. If you do this, I hope you’re hungry. I had skipped lunch that day and still found it difficult to finish. It probably didn’t help that the food was mediocre and very salty. You also better like meat. Pea soup, with meat in the bowl and on the side with your bread. The main course was a sizable sausage with three types of hutspot. The one with kale came with more meat(mixed in and sprinkled on top). To emphasize the point, there was a porcelain plate(likely from Delft) on the wall next to my table beautifully decorated with a scene from an old-timey butcher-shop doing what they do with pigs on tables and split-style, dangling from the ceiling. If you’re in the mood for very hearty, meaty, salty comfort food, then this is the place. Just get the pilsner on tap to help wash it down.

Extremely Hi standard and extremely warm greeter-owner ~ authentic Dutch chef prepared and plated, nothing but deliciousness, dishes. My husband enjoyed menu No 1; and me, pea soup and croquettes ~ both beyond 10 stars. Not only clean and peaceful ambiance but clean restrooms too. Would we return, 100 star YES!!! Why would anyone eat anywhere else in Amsterdam than The Pantry.

So, we Unilocaled for an authentic Dutch restaurant around us and«the pantry» came up. We have no idea what to expect when we walked in, but it was a great experience and we were glad we went. It was very homey, something like your grandma’s place. We had the mustard soup and bitterballen for our starters. We were a little squeamish about the mustard soup, but decided to give it a try. It was a pleasant surprise as to how great it tasted. The meatballs were great as well. We shared a traditional sausage with beef stew mashed potatoes. We don’t usually finish our food, but we left nothing on the plate. It was truly an enjoyable dinner and we would recommend you to stop by if you are around the area.

I had to try Dutch food for real. So i went here. Bitter-balle, nah not so good. But god damnit, I never thought a sausage with some mashed potatoes could taste this good. Good portion, great staff, friendly aura. A lot of people come here, and I understand why. It’s for tourists I guess, but it’s a must-try if you havent tried dutch food.

Braving the rain and huge wind that was so strong that had physically forced and pushed me to take a few steps ahead was an unforgettable experience I ever had in Amsterdam. Can’t imagine my trip throughout was mostly rainy with some hiccups but still we managed to get some good meal in between. Walking up and down of the streets due to the blurred vision caused by the rain and street lights, we had finally managed our navigations to the doorsteps of The Pantry as advised by our mobile application for Traditional Dutch Food. And Wow, we never knew seat was almost all taken and was lucky that we got ourselves the window seat by the door even without a reservation. We was warmly greeted by service crew and with a question of «Where are you from?» and was handed the English Menu. Environment was cozy in its dimly lit chandeliers, furnished by solid wooden table and chairs with traditional Dutch decorations(paintings & porcelains) on its wall. This spot fits a perfect date with a nice ambiance and famous music playing softly in the background. To be frank, I know nuts about Dutch Food and as usual we hit on the usual order by choosing the Pre-Set Menu, one each. Meanwhile before the Starters, we were so excited about Amsterdam Beer and got ourselves each a Amstel Gold and Amstel Radler. They were soothing as we adjusted ourselves in the warmly heated up environment. Amstel Gold 3,75& Amstel Radler — 3,25 Eur MENU1(19,95EUR) Starter Having Pea Soup was not very ideal in my impression from a start as I’m not very comfortable eating peas alone but these dutch Peas had totally changed my mindset. Soup was served in Lion Head Porcelain Bowl and it was orange instead of mushy green color. To be honest, the soup had whit my appetite. It tasted as sweet as pumpkin soup with herbs and cream and grab the slices of rye bread by the side and dip in! Pea-Soup with Rye Bread and Smoked Bacon Main Presenting the traditional taste of Dutch with meatballs and mashed potatoes. The dish has a very long history in its cuisine with boiled mashed potatoes in combination of carrots, onions, sauerkraut. It has the choice to be served with smoked sausage or meatball and we chose the latter. Meatball was made up of minced meat was real good in its sauce. Combination of Hutspot, zuurkool — en boerenkoolstamppot served with meatball Dessert While dessert was Vlaflip — Vanilla custard with yoghurt and syrup. It wasn’t too bad just that I had forgotten to snap a picture of it. MENU3(26,80EUR) Starter It took me a while before I actually start eating them as I was kind of shocked to receive the combination as a starter. 3 kind of dutch sausages were cooling and tastes quite differently. We spreaded the paste on the bread added with pickles. Well ~ what’s the best /proper way to enjoy them? Combination of Three Dutch Sausages, Served with Bread, Pickles and Mustard Main Pairing of Beef with onion stew was perfect for the night. The main was delighting with its tender cubes of beef. Together with sides like the shredded red cabbages and mashed potatoes, even though the portion may look small but it actually got us filled up easily. Savoury Beef and Onion Stew with Red Cabbage and Mashed Potato Dessert Ending the meal with a square-cut size brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and generous portion of whipped cream, adorn with the zig zag patterns from the cherry sauce. Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream, Cherry Sauce and Whipped Cream Having dined in The Pantry was an excellent choice with friendly server that took additional steps to service their customers. Moreover as an Asian who had never experienced Dutch Food, I’m very glad that my choice of dinner was wisely chosen. Don’t let your taste buds run elsewhere, The Pantry is the good opportunity for Traditional Dutch Food.

If you’re travelling to Amsterdam and want a taste of traditional Dutch food, but with the OPTION of bailing out and having something a little more universal, you should rock up at The Pantry. It’s easy to miss as it’s tucked down some side street right in the centre of the city. Don’t give up. The food is definitely worth the appetite that you’ll build up trying to find it. This is the only place that I visited twice for lunch during my recent stay. The first time, I wasn’t really feeling ambitious enough to try some traditional Dutch food, so I opted for smoked sausage and a green tea. I realise that this is probably an odd combination, but it demonstrates there is something for everyone. Not too hungry? Grab a sausage with a lil mustard and you’ll be set for a solid 5 hours before you need to eat again. If you’re feeling particularly peckish and want to dive right into Dutch cuisine, you’ve got to go for the hutspot, boerenkool– and zuurkoolstamppot combo served with a smoked sausage or a meatball. I have no idea what is in these foods. It’s kind of like a mashed potato medley, shaped like scoops of ice cream, but hot and a little sour, savoury and erm… not all potato. It’s all in gravy. To top it off, you get a smoked sausage or a meteor sized meatball. It’s quite a tough dish to finish as the food is very rich. As you look around the room, you will see plenty of people giving themselves little«food breaks». You will WANT to finish everything on your plate so that you don’t have any hunger regrets later in the night. It is that, damn, good. You will not want to eat for a good 12 hours or so after eating this dish. There are a few reasons I couldn’t give The Pantry give stars: — It took us a while to get served — probably 20 mins before our orders were taken and then another 10 – 15 before we were served our food. — The chairs are a little uncomfortable and there’s not a lot of room if you’re sat at the tables just in front of the doorway. Also, a quick note. You can’t split your bill here. Whilst we were eating, a group of American tourists wanted to split their bill. The waiter made is clear that they don’t split bills at The Pantry(and lots of other places in the Netherlands). Things got really weird. When I go back to Amsterdam, I look forward to going back a third time. Perhaps I will try some more traditional food. But if not, I always know there is a pot of hot tea and a smoked sausage waiting for me. And that’s just fine.

Freundliche, nette, aufmerksame Bedienung.

Tip: WiFi pw is pantry1234. Loved it! My traditional Dutch dish of a sausage and three types of mashed potatoes was delicious. Even though the place was super busy on New Year and I had no reservation, they did their best to accommodate me and others in my situation, telling us we could have tables until X time when guests with reservations were due to arrive. There was also the option to sit outside. While I waited about ten minutes to be seated, they started to prepare my food so that I wouldn’t feel rushed once my table was cleared. Very efficient. The staff was charming – engaging and friendly, all smiles. They were happy to chat lightly and to explain the cuisine. I noticed that, between them, they speak at least three languages, which is incredibly handy in the center of the city. I should emphasize that this place isn’t swamped with tourists. I saw locals for sure.

This place was SO good we ended up going twice during our 6 day stay! Another gem discovered on Unilocal,we spent a while looking around for The Pantry(it’s tucked away on a little side street, just off the Leidseplein), but believe me it was worth walking around for! After reading some of the reviews that other Unilocalers had left, I opted for the combination of hutspot, boerenkool and zuurkoolstamppot with a meatball. What an amazingly rich and tasty dish, perfect for warming your cockles on a winters day! It consisted of mashed potato with carrot and swede, mashed potato with kale and bacon, and mashed potato with saurkraut, with a huge meatball on top. I’ve never tasted anything like it, and I wish I could eat this sort of thing at home! The waiter was very good at explaining the menu and recommended a good beer to accompany my meal. On our second visit, I had the same again but from the fixed menu. I had pea soup with rye bread to start, and as a newcomer to pea soup, I have to say it was just brilliant! So warming and tasty. I feel like I want to start eating pea soup more often but I’m just worried it won’t compare to the pea soup from the pantry! For dessert I had something called ‘vlaflip’, which was yogurt, custard and some fruit sauce. It was okay, but not three things I would usually combine and eat together. I’ll try anything once though, and it was okay! The Pantry was definitely one of my highlights of my visit to Amsterdam. I cannot wait to go back!

Legitimate dutch food here. Make a reservation or you may be SOL. They pride themselves on local food here and I recommend that you make a stop here if you want to experience some of what Amsterdam has to offer. Their sausage with mash was good(ask to add a meatball as well) and their stew was extremely tasty while being served with some of the best red cabbage slaw I’ve ever had. 4 stars for good food and good service… just wish they had a few more beers on tap.

Good spot for some traditional Dutch food… which actually isn’t that great. I found everything to be a bit… mushy? I mean isn’t «pea soup» just a fancy term for baby food? Anyway, if this is what Dutch food is, they do it well. They have a 3 course menu for a reasonable price, outdoor seating, and great service.

Before leaving Amsterdam, I wanted to try some traditional dutch food and The Pantry came up high on the list of restaurants to check out. We stopped in mid-afternoon(probably around 3PM), hoping for a quick meal since we had to go back to our hotel on the other side of the city to grab our bags before heading to the train station. Luckily, there were only a few other patrons since we stopped in at such a random time. We explained our time crunch to the waitress, and she was very understanding and helpful. She recommended menu items that would come out more quickly and did her best to get us everything we needed as fast as she could. We really appreciated this, especially knowing that dining at a restaurant in Europe is usually a much more leisurely experience than it is in the US, where dining experiences are often rushed. The service here is really what made this a 5-star experience. The food was also delicious. I ordered the hutspot, which is mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions, and served with a large meatball(a smoked sausage was an option in place of the meatball). The meal was delicious and the epitome of comfort food. I really enjoyed it and wish I would’ve had the time to try more items from their menu. The restaurant atmosphere was warm cozy and reminded me of someone’s home, especially with the hospitality we were shown!

Really nice place to discover local dishes at an affordable price.
