It’s listed as a Indonesian Malaysian restaurant, however they don’t serve the typical Malaysian dishes. When I think of Malaysian cuisine, I think of laksa(a spicy noodle soup), roti canai or Hainanese chicken rice. So basically, when I’m in the mood for Malaysian food I go to Nyonya Malaysia Express. The food they serve here reminds me more of Indonesian food, but then Indonesian food on steriods, I guess with the steriods being the Malaysian influences. I much rather prefer this food compared to the typical Indonesian, the flavours are somehow more balanced. I’ve never eaten in, always do takeaway and I always go for the Nasi Lemak Malaysia. It’s like your own little mini rijsttafel for 1 and where else do they serve a rijsttafel for 1, exactly nowhere. You get a big portion of mild coconut rice, slowly smothered beef, slowly smothered veal, sate, an egg, sweet & sour mixed veggies amongst others. The people over there are always so friendly, offering me something to drink while I’m waiting for my food. They have a tv as well… remember watching a Wimbledon match while waiting for my order When my mom comesover for holidays, I must order the Nasi Lemak Malaysia at least once. She absolutely loves it and that after all is the best food there is, food that helps create happy memories

Beware. This place is expensive for what it serves, and it claims to serve Malaysian/Indonesian food. Well, I happen to know Malaysian food pretty well and all we got served was some verisimilitude of Malaysian dishes done quite badly. We had tried to be fair and asked the owner to make some recommendations, and we ended up with a really poor expensive dinner. The satay was a joke, the curries were laughable and all the dishes were done with too much sugar in an attempt to make them palatable. The atmosphere is bland and the décor was a touch eclectic, but this wouldn’t have mattered if the food was good. I am new to Amsterdam, and this was the first Asian restaurant I tried there following a recommendation from a guide book. I just hope that others would have higher standards. It was a pity as Rotterdam had some nice Asian places, so I was hoping that Amsterdam would be at least comparable. Please note that I really do not like to slam places like this, but the attitude of the staff irritated me immensely, the food was horrid and substandard, and the cost of our meal was unconscionable.
