The only thing I knew about Surinamese food was from those Chinese/Indian/Surinamese«toko”/takeouts. I didn’t know what I was missing! This place is awesome! Okay, so here’s the thing! I love BBQ but none of that lame propane grilled crap people dare to call barbecue! NO! Propane is not BBQ! You might as well slap a piece of meat on a gas stove and say«I’m barbecuing». Even unicorns would stop shitting rainbows at that thought. Get that shit away from me! Charcoal is the only way to go! But what if you’re so carbon deprived that simple charbroiling just doesn’t suffice anymore? What’s the next step to heavenly charness? Stop pouring accelerant over yourself, you don’t have to go that far, no, it’s Smoked and then Charbroiled meat! And that’s what they do here! They smoke meat for hours in a smoker cooker and then they charbroil it. I’m not a big fan of chicken(stop getting upset and being shocked. I said I’m not a big fan of it, not that I hate it) but the chicken here tasted SO good, so smoked and charbroiled, so tender and juicy… that, for a minute, I actually contemplated: «hey, is this pork… or chicken… it tastes too good, it must be lean pork». Amazing! We also had this noodle«salad» with Thai«rice tagliatelle» and a bunch of fresh ingredients, including smoked and charbroiled super tender chicken breast, at your disposal to shove in your noodle«salad» bowl, mix, and nom it up. It was a great appetizer! The noodle salad, the conventional salad, the fried rice, the chicken, the ribs etc. were all amazing! Including the fries! The fries were deep fried in dripping! That’s animal fats that drip from the meat when on the grill. They re-used those drippings for frying the potato fries! I recognized the flavor, but surprisingly, I enjoyed it. So I was again in doubt and asked the waitress. She checked with the chef and indeed! Animal fat! Whuttt!!! I tried disgusting fries fried in dripping in England twice and it was HORRENDOUS! It literally made me retch and gag! Like I was biting into a greasy dead cow. UGH! I’d rather be licking on a poopscicle. Which is why I was in such doubt because these fries were Amazing!!! I’m a person who cuts off the fat around his steak if it’s not completely melted onto the steak. Not even marbleized will do for me. I don’t like animal fats. But these fries… these fries were not greasy, they were crispy, they did Not at all have an overwhelming taste of animal fat, ATALL. Instead they had this pleasant, aromatic butter ghee like accent. Very well done, very well indeed. Last dish I wanna mention is the banana pancakes. Now, these were American style pancakes, not the Dutch thick crêpe style pancakes. I’m not a pancake guy. I’m more a waffle guy but AGAIN These South Americans managed to surprise me! The pancakes were absolutely scrumptious! You have to try them! …DOIT! Also worth mentioning is that they add a certain type of wood chips to the smoker cooker for added flavor because of the different scent in the smoke. Also, don’t worry about the infamous Dutch service. Here you will be treated very kindly. The fact that they managed to pleasantly surprise me with 3 things I normally don’t love/like, is why I’m giving them 5 stars!

What a unique place and unique find in Amsterdam. Absolutely hard to find BBQ awesomeness! Probably some of the friendliest and hardworking people I’ve seen in a long time. Also a very cozy and comfortable place to spent an evening with friends or a date. Also try this place during the daytime for Buscarglione coffee of a quality you would never expect in a BBQ place. These people take their business very serious. Go!

if you want a real bbq’d meat experience i highly suggest you try this place. everything is roasted/bbq’d in their bbq pit. the marinades were perfectly subtly sweet and with an amazing smoky flavor. they also have a banana pancake that is out of this world. it’s the fluffy kind, american style! it comes with a sweet butter sauce and roasted sesame seeds, not so american but i LOVED it! the owner also said they make a french toast that is very popular. extra thick slices of bread the way a good french toast should be made. i’ll definitely be going back to try this. last but not least. i was impressed with their cup of coffee. just the regular kind, no lattes or capps(which they also serve) was out of this world. if you like a nice strong cup of coffee, which in my world is the only way to go, then you must have a cup or two. it’s a family run business and the owners are wonderful! they’re right in the heart of the albert cuyp market. do a little shopping & then go enjoy some bbq, pancakes or coffee!
