Memphis EMB Hotel

On the second leg of our Eurotip we flew from London to Amsterdam. After experiencing a horrific hotel in London, The Memphis hotel was a refreshing surprise.
The location is great, there are 2 trolley stops within a couple blocks of the corner. The trolley gets you into the heart of the city in 15 minutes.
The rooms were very spacious and the beds are very comfortable. We don’t have any complaints. The staff was also very helpful.

Great location but this place needs heavy duty remodeling and repair. First of all the heater is blasting to the point that turning off the unit in your room does little to combat the heat coming through the door. If you are a fan of hot and stuffy this will work fine. The tub is so small that the bottom is just wide enough to place two feet. The toilet paper holder impedes over the toilet making it impossible to sit straight on the thing. There is a horrible stench in the hallways and elevator which smells like open sewage. Wifi is free but if you want a coffee from the lobby it’s 2 €. In a word it’s awful.

I stayed here for a few nights in February of this year and enjoyed it. The price was fantastic, even considering that it was during shoulder-​season. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful with whatever requests or questions I had, especially when I was trying to figure out how to ship a few things back to the US (Amsterdam has no actual post offices.) Breakfast was very good, I woke up each morning and went downstairs to have a plate or two and read while enjoying the view. Surrounding neighborhood is mostly residential and quiet at night. It’s not right in the middle of everything but it is within short walking distance to Vondelpark, Rijksmuseum and other points of interest and there is a streetcar stop just a few steps away from the front door if you want to explore the city further. My room was very comfortable, all appliances and fixtures worked as expected and were in good repair. Fantastic stay.

One word– MICE!!!
There were mice in 2 rooms– we asked to be moved to another room only to find another mouse crawling across our sheets!!! needless to say we ran out of the room and checked out ASAP, only to be aske dby our taxi driver how the stay was, to which we told him about the mice– his reply, after a big belly laugh, «this hotel is known for having mice– its an old building and needs to be town-​down in order to remove them– they are all in the walls and everywhere!!» Note to self– DO NOT stay in any lodgings that are not new buildings in Amsterdam– such a lovely city and its a shame the old buildings are infested by them!
