After a busy week and not much time to cook and thus eating either junk food or ready made dinners, my body was, not whispering but, clearly yelling at me for some healthy food, and healthy food I had for roughly € 15 per person for lunch. We found this little eatery at one side of the subway stop«van Boshuizenstraat» in Buitenveldert Amsterdam, just inside of Amsterdam at the border of Amstelveen. You’ll find this place just on one side of the subway tracks where on the other side you’ll find Jumbo and a few other shops. It’s really a 1 minute walk from the stop. We ordered two lunch menu sets, one with grilled fish, a small kind of mackerel, and one with breaded deep fried boneless chicken. The deal included miso soup, salad, side dishes(such as lightly pickled oden), steamed rice and a scoop of ice cream at the end. Of course, we ordered some nice green tea with our lunch. After this healthy lunch I really felt revived from all the junk food. The green tea was real Japanese sencha, slightly sweet, not too bitter, almost creamy, flavorful and at the right temperature; around 75 degrees centigrade. The small grilled mackerel was initially a chore to eat as I had to pick the fishbones out on one side. Once I flipped the fish and easily ripped out the skeleton, I was left with only the filet and some intestines, which I didn’t eat. I asked the very nice and homey waitress if Japanese people normally eat the intestines, to which she then gave me a positive answer. I’ll try them next time. Everything was fresh and of high quality but I didn’t feel much for the salad. It felt out of place. I tried a bit of the fried chicken. It was breaded like at KFC but it wasn’t as greasy, but was still flavorful and juicy, and not dry at all. All in all, it was a great experience. When we walked in we only saw a few Japanese people sitting alone and enjoying their lunch. I will definitely be coming back here for lunch. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s tired of glutens and sugars(e.g. high tea) or MSG(e.g. dim sum) for lunch.
