House of Bols

Nur für Besucher ab 18 Jahren! Toller Rundgang –sehr schön gemacht und mit dem Audioguide sehr interessant. Mit dem Eintritt erhält man einen Cocktail gratis. Ein Besuch lohnt sich. Die Cocktailbar hat uns etwas enttäuscht — wir haben mehr Show erwartet. Cocktails sind gut. Ende durch den üblichen Shop mit 10% auf alles :-)

House of Bols was AMAZING!
I’m so glad I made sure we went during our visit. I’m extremely partial to a cocktail now and then *cough everyday cough* and going to a museum dedicated to the Netherlands no.1 spirit was definitely going to be entertaining for me.
Whilst here we learned all about Genever, the main spirit exported from the Netherlands. It was the no.1 spirit exported around Europe (I daresay the World, but I can’t remember) until us Brits tried to steal the recipe, and accidentally ended up with what we now know as Gin! (how rude!)
There were lots of interactive things to do, including tasting breath strips where you had to guess the flavour whilst looking at various imagery designed to confuse you.
Now on to my favourite part. included in the price of the ticket is one free cocktails and 2 shots of whichever flavour bols or genever you would like! There are touchscreens where you can select the kind of flavour you would like to go for (complex, simple, sweet, sour etc) and you will be given recommendations. If you stick around you can get further cocktails at a discount… I ended up having 4! (whilst in Amsterdam)…
Definitely a must visit if you’re in the museum quarter.

cool distillery tour that engages all the senses… unique compared to other distillery tours. the free drinks with your tickets are generous (you literally get a cocktail and 2 shots). 3 stars because the mirror bar at the end was sloppy — discarded drinks piling up all over the place. also not a fan of Genever or liquors (even though I really like Gin).

Great self guided tour! I had fun trying to guess the flavors by smell, and learning how to throw a bottle of alcohol around is always fun. Totally worth it as you get a cocktail and two shots at the end! I had a fun time.

Stopped in here on a whim while wandering through the area. The tour was very informative and you go at your own pace. So take as much or as little time as you want to get to the cocktails at the end. The tour includes a couple of samples and one full cocktail. You can then relax and order more if you have more time and money to spend. I’m glad I stopped in and would recommend you do too. Cheers.

This is nothing but a fancy tourist trap. The «tour» is not a tour, instead it is posters about the company’s history with a lot of marketing propaganda. You lead yourselves through a few rooms and then end it with a cocktail. This should be free or no more than 5 euros per person. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

House of Bols is both a tasting experience and a museum. Before going to the House of Bols I wasn’t sure how the experience would be after reading reviews on a couple websites, but I’m glad I went since it was both informative and fun. I purchased tickets ahead of time online because I had a coupon code that brought the price down by a couple Euros.
The first part of the experience is the museum, which goes over the history of the House of Bols. Next is a section regarding tasting and smell senses. At this point there are taste strips available to see how your brain reacts to information. Followed by this is a long room where you can smell a variety of different flavors. It’s a great experience in learning what to look for during a tasting experience.
After the museum and sensory experience is the drinking experience. At the end of the walk through your ticket entitles you to one drink and two shots. You select your drink by going through a computer, which then prints out a receipt with the drink recipe.
Overall this may be a touristy experience, but House of Bols was a lot of fun and interesting. Next time I’m in Amsterdam I would definitely go again.

Fun. Different. Cheap. I enjoyed this place. Had some great drinks, learned a bit. If you want to get away from all of the art and culture that is 15 feet away, this is a good stop.

I don’t like touristy things, but this was fun! The tour is modestly priced for such an experience. Threw all through tour takes about 30 minutes and then you are guided to a modern bar were you can sample and grab a cocktail. The bartenders were very friendly and skilled. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good cocktail.

Ich habe bei der Bewertung zwischen 3 und 4 Sternen geschwankt.
Das Bols-​Haus ist natürlich stark werblich ausgelegt, was den vergleichenden Informationsgehalt der Texte und Filme stark beschneidet.
Nichtsdestotrotz macht es Spaß, seinen Geruchssinn an 36 Proben zu testen (ich glaube, es ist nicht schlimm, wenn man weniger als 10% errät — die Fläschchen sind schon ziemlich abgestanden;O). Wenn man Geruchsproben in den Schubladen mit den Zereal-​Zutaten anstellt, merkt man, dass auch dort die Proben inzwischen vom Geruch her sehr aneinander angeglichen sind (alles riecht stark nach Anis).
Vielleicht wird hier ja mal nach ein paar Jahren ausgetauscht.
Im Eintrittspreis von € 14 sind 1 Cocktail und 2 Shots inbegriffen. An Selbstbedienungsautomaten kann man sich Cocktails heraussuchen, die fast ausschließlich aus Bols-​Zutaten bestehen (was die Drinks nicht gerade besser macht). Trotzdem: Schlecht schmecken tut hier nichts. Und wer seinen «Bar Stuff» noch nicht beisammen hat, kann seine Hausbar mit allerlei Equipment aus dem Shop erweitern.
Alles in allem: Lohnenswert.

En entrant dans ce musée, j’ai vraiment pensé que j’allais passer 1 h dans un truc interactif sans intérêt slash piège à touristes, mais ce n’est pas le cas: les salles né sont pas nombreuses mais l’expérience olfactive et gustative est garantie. À la fin, vous composez un cocktail et pouvez gouter à 2 liqueurs de votre choix !!!

This is a must if you visit Amsterdam! A very vibrant tour followed by a handmade cocktail at the end that unbelievably delicious! The bartender spoke English very well and extremely nice. He let us help him create a punch that would be used for a tasting for the day then gave our group a free glass! I wish i had been here before the end of my stay here!

For some reason the Scottish weather decided to follow us to Amsterdam which left us feeling a bit washed out. Thankfully House of Bols managed to revive our spirit. The tour was interesting but the best part was the delicious cocktail at the end. The bartender whipped a lovely wee banana number up in no time at all! Hopefully I’ll get a chance to try and make some cocktails now that I’m home. Enjoy.

Not to be missed. We walked over after touring the Van Gogh museum. The lobby has some fun historical items. Taking the tour is not required but it was still early and you get a cocktail included with your ticket. You end up in the bar after the tour and we had good fun with the bartenders. There is a cocktail vending machine where you can purchase additional beverages.

It’s a fun little place to visit and is a welcome break from the chaos of the musuems and tourist traps. Great place for some cheap cocktails (€ 5) but is closed for renovations for a while.

Totally in ‘me’ style regel ik een cocktailparty bij House of Bols. Want een Bols likeurtje dat lusten we wel.
Vooraf per e-​mail probeer ik te reserveren voor mij en vier vrienden. Ik besluit de cocktailparty te nemen, deze is inclusief een cocktail tijdens de museum tour en drie tijdens de party zelf. Ik krijg nog wat informatie over themas, maar voor de rest geen vragen om een keuze te maken, dus ga ervan uit dat ik dat ter plekke regel.
Ook krijg ik in informatie over de hapjes die ze serververen. Als ik wat te knabbelen wil hebben kost dat 3,90 p.p.voor wat pindas en kaasstengels en ik moet minimaal voor zes personen afnemen. Heerlijk zon op maat gemaakte offerte. Denk maar niet dat ik 20 € betaal voor wat pinda“s. Dus ik laat het bij de cocktailtjes. Overigens kan ik alle andere hapjes pas afnemen als ik voor minimaal tien personen betaal, dus geen hapjes voor ons.
Er wordt gevraagd voor een aanbetaling en bevestiging van de factuur en mijn party is rond. Aldussss
We komen aan bij house of bols een vriendelijke jongeman ontvangt ons enthousiast en mn resevering is bekend. Joeppie dit beloofd wat! We hebben er zin in. We krijgen nog een vipbandje om en met wat house of bols flyers en cocktailmuntjes (3p.p.) worden we t museum ingestuurd. Drie denk ik bij mezelf? Hmm kzal me wel vergist hebben. We lopen de tour. Het museum is erg commercieel, maar leuk opgezet. Binnen 20 minuten zijn we er dan ook doorheen.
We komen aan in de spiegelbar. Het is er megadruk. Waar moeten we heen? Geen personeel om ons op te vangen. Ik had toch een event georganiseerd? Ik spreek een medewerkster aan. Oow ze weet dat we kwamen. Ze zegt dat se zelfs een tafel voor ons heeft gereseveerd. Helemaal top!
Tot dan toe dus.:
Onze viptafel staat midden tussen twee lange rijen mensen, die voor de twee computers staan om hun cocktailkaartjes te printen. Onze tafel is vies en er staan lege glazen op. Het meisje zegt dat we en cocktail van de kaart mogen kiezen. En dat er nog vier extra cocktails staan op een kaartje op onze tafel.
Zoo dit is het dus?
Ik vraag naar de leuke themas die mij gemaild zjjn. Met een hele lijst met speciale cocktails die mij beloofd zijn. Het meisje weet er niet veel van en haalt haar meerdere. Deze vrouw beweerd dat er ge-​emaild js, dat ik moet kiezen voor een thema. Dat ze gemaild hebben voor mn telefoonnummer om me te bereiken. Ik zeg dat het niet zo is. Maar ze houdt voet bij stuk en ik mag alleen nog kiezen van de cocktails in de computer. Zoo daar gaat mn special event. Ik ben niks meer dan een gewone house of bols gast, met een vipbandje dat nergens op slaat en een vieze smerige gereserveerde tafel. De «meerdere» wenst me een fijne avond en gaat weg.
Uiteraard check ik ter plaatsen mn e-​mail. Waarin uiteraard geen vraag is gesteld over een thema of over een telefoonnummer. En uiteraard staat in mn e-​mail dat ik vier cocktailmuntjes krijg.
Zo vip voel ik me niet meer in deze tent. Mn vrienden staan inmiddels al een kwartier in de rij om onze cocktails te bemachtigen en ik doe nog een poging om de medewerkster die ik de eerste keer had aangesproken te vragen naar t vierde muntje. Ik laat haar de e-​mail zien. Her duurt een poos maar eindelijk krijg ik na een tijd mn vierde muntje.
Het is nog steeds erg druk. De cocktails smaken lekker maar doordat je steeds zo ontiechelijk lang moet wachten op je cocktail, gaat de sfeer al gauw naar beneden. De helft van de partypeople staat namelijk in de rij. En de andere helft is druk bezig om alle andere non-​vip ahum gasten van ons tafeltje als strontvliegen te verjagen, maarja die mensen kunnen ook niet helpen, dat er nergens plaats voor ze is.
Ik zou zeggen. Laat je ni afpoeieren met een arrangement hiero. Tenzij je graag met een rood vip bandje 15 minutenin de rij wilt staan, je aan een vieze tafel je coxktail wilt drinken en je een bedrijf wilt steunen dat liegt over haar e-​mailverkeer met je.
Easy-​omzet, amper service! Shame on you!

Dutch Gin. Like no other. Called Jenever its a juniper based spirit.
Its also the «National drink of Holland (and Belgium, but really, Holland lead the way I’m sure). It is the forefather to gin (you know, what we tend to drink in America. Like some wines, in order to be called Jenever, it must be made in certain places in certain countries (The Netherlands, Belgium, parts of Germany and parts of France).
History is actually unclear where it first came from (most likely Flanders), but it is clear that, like many alcohols, it was first marketed as a medicinal product.
House of Bols is a fun place to visit. Come here and see how genever is made, why the juniper was first used, and have a cocktail at the end. Its a win win. Similar to visiting a vineyard, they really want you to enjoy the experience and have made it a nice one as a result, If you buy your ticket online there’s a slight discount.
Come here for a different kind of culture after you visit the other «real» museums in the area.

This is a walking tour so you get to go at your own place. It’s informative and fun but kind of short. It includes a cocktail of your choice and two tasters. You can also get a student discount.

Un musée en face du musées Van Gogh qui lui est bondé de monde ! Au moins chez House Of Bols il n’y a pas de temps d’attente… La grande façade de briques rouges nous en dit peu sur ce qu’on peut trouver à l’intérieur hormis qu’il y a de l’alcool… Nous sommes donc rentrés à l’intérieur et avons découvert un lieu spacieux et moderne. Nous avons payé 15 € par personne, ça peu paraître cher, mais c’est l’un des musées les moins onéreux de la ville et ce qui est sûr c’est qu’on en a pour notre argent ! Puis, nous avons donc commencé à découvrir la marque Bols, la distillerie la plus vieille au monde et qui fabrique des liqueurs à Amsterdam depuis 1575 !
La visite s’articule autour des cinq sens, on commence par goûter une petite feuille qui se dissout dans la bouche et l’on doit deviner de quoi il s’agit. Puis, on se met à sentir une trentaine d’odeur de composants de liqueurs: anis, orange, café etc. un jeu amusant qui permet de se challenger entre amis. On passé au toucher où l’on plonge les mains dans différentes graines. Enfin, pendant tout le long on en prend plein les yeux avec toutes ces couleurs de liqueurs différentes.
La visite se termine par l’accès au bar, notre billet d’entrée nous permet de consommer un cocktail et deux shooters de liqueur au choix ! En effet, à Amsterdam on boit dans les musées (avec modération). Pour le choix du cocktail, nous avions dû sélectionner sur un écran nos préférences, fruité, doux… Evidemment, les cocktails sont servis par des barmen experts en jonglage de bouteilles et on peut même essayer avec des quilles devant une caméra (c’est tout de suite moins parfait que le barman).
Nous sommes partis ravis d’avoir pu goûter à cette célèbre liqueur, encore un excellent moment passé à Amsterdam ! Un lieu original que je vous conseille vivement de découvrir et qui reflète bien la vie amstellodamoise.

The museum itself is pretty interesting because it is so interactive. It was pretty busy when we walked through, so it was hard to smell all the scent bottles, but it was still very interesting. The best part of course is when you get to order a cocktail and two shots of genever. I ordered the passion fruit and peach brandy and my hubby got the sour apple and strawberry. The sour apple was by far the best. I got the pomegranate cocktail, which was very tasty. We also taped ourselves trying to flair bartend on the booth. You get to send the video to an email address. If you can, go on Friday, because there is a 5 Euro discount if you go after 5pm.

They call it an experience. That is an understatement.
The self guided tour takes about an hour and a bit, depending on how long you stay in the last ‘instalment’ but I’ll go into that later.
Entrance is limited to the 18+‘s and the entrance fee may seem a little OTT but, in my estimation, worth it. Again that will be explained later.
The tour takes you through the History of the House of Bols and how, we Brits, pinched the genever idea and started to make the ‘inferior’ gin. That’s how the Dutch explained it. Great visual displays in the form of video and sound and light displays. Fantastic selection of Delft houses given to KLM Business class passengers. Then comes the crowning glory of this tour, teaching you how your taste and smell senses can be deceived. Placing a taste strip in your mouth and watching the screen your brain is sent into overdrive. Shots on the screen of various fruits scramble the brain. Was that taste strawberry, cherry, melon etc etc. Awesome. The final challenge in this room was to pinch the nose while placing a taste strip in the mouth. NO TASTE. Unpinch the nose and WOW, the flavour comes through.
A room with about 48 bottles to smell the various scents. Truly fascinating.
Finally, I mentioned the entrance fee. The ultimate experience is a visit to the bar where, on a visual display, you choose a cocktail. Print your choice out and take it to the bar where a barman, from the bartending school above, makes your cocktail. Followed by your choice of two shots of any of the full selection of genevers. There goes the entrance fee. You can even have another cocktail, or two, for a price of 6.50 Euros each.
We were extremely lucky that while on our visit a ‘student’ came down with his new cocktail and asked the bartenders and us to give our thoughts on his delightful ‘concoction’. Full of citrus flavours, wonderful.
If you are in Amsterdam, well worth a visit. Especially if, like us, you enjoy a different alcoholic beverage.

Avec le prix de l’entrée très abordable vous avez droit à une visite avec l’histoire de la distillerie Bols. Durant la visite vous choisissez deux alcools dont vous avez appréciés l’odeur et à la fin de la visite on vous sert deux shooter remplis de vos alcools préférés et un cocktail.(tout ça compris dans le prix d’entrer)

Je né suis pas «fille a musée», non pas que je n’aime pas l’art, mais le monde/l’ambiance m’ennuie profondément dans ce genre d’endroit.
Alors, pour mon court séjours dans la ville j’ai dis adieu a Anne F et Vincent Von G. pour dire bonjour au «House of bols» (faut dire que les deux autres sont pas au point niveau cocktail).
Aves les 11 € de l’entrée vous aurez le droit à une visite/​parcours sur le thème de l’alambic avec les «5 sens». On goute, on sent, on plonge les mains dans des grands tiroirs pleins d’ingrédient (avec le petit plaisir façon «Amelie Poulain» dedans), on en prends pleins les yeux avec toutes ces couleurs.
A la fin du parcours, et inclus dans le tarifs d’entrée à 11 €, on se fait offrir un cocktail au choix parmi la mutité de parfum proposés.
Cet endroit est à mi chemin entre la sortie éducative et l’apéro. Je né saurais dire à quel point j’ai été conquise.

House of what… Bols? Yes, that is exactly right. Bols is a Genever (Gin) first created in Amsterdam in 1664.
Now this is my type of museum! Upon entering, you will see a whole wall of different colored Genevers. There is every color and flavor imaginable. The girls at the ticket counter were personable, helpful and patient. They explained that the museum is a self guided tour, answered all of our questions and even took our jackets to hang up for us so that we can explore in comfort.
The tour shows you the history of the Bols family and distillery. As you wander around, you are able to smell and touch the different ingredients that go into producing these Genevers.
At the very end of your tour, you can select your choice of a free cocktail on a computer, print the choice and present to the bartender. The bartender is in the mirrored bar room where you can enjoy watching your cocktail being made, take pictures and get 2 more free shots of your choice.
I recommend the strawberry yogurt. It was the most refreshing, fruity and delicious cocktail I’ve ever had.

Unten wurde das House of Bols ja schon sehr gut beschrieben, da kann ich mir das ja sparen. :)
Uns hat es dort auch sehr gut gefallen.
Mit dem kleinen «Musuem» dort kann man sich leider nicht sehr lange beschäftigen, aber es ist gut gemacht, sehr interaktiv udn schön dekoriert.^^
Und den Preis von 11,50 EUR inkl. eines sehr leckeren Cocktails und 2 Shots nach Wahl find ich auch absolut gerechtfertigt.

Nach der Besichtigung des Van Gogh Museums wollten wir mal ein Päuschen machen und sind daher ins gegenüberliegende House of Bols gegangen. Der Eintrittspreis beinhaltet schon gleich einen Gutschein für einen Cocktail nach Wahl sowie 2 Likörproben.
Zunächst schlendert man jedoch durch ein Marketingwunderland der Likörchen. Das alles ist schön aufbereitet. Besonders schön sind die zahlreichen Zerstäüber, an denen man seinen Geruchssinn testen kann — Sorten wir Grüné Banane sind beim besten Willen nicht rauszufinden. Aber auch schon bei einfacheren Aromen tut man sich erstaunlich schwer.
Der Rundgang endet in einer verspiegelten Bar. Am Eingang finden sich Touchscreens und aufgrund der eigenen Vorlieben, werden Cocktails vorgeschlagen. Das Rezept seiner Wahl druckt man und gibt es dem Herrn am Shaker — und ein paar Momente später hält man ein leckres Getränk in den Händen.
Nachdem wir dies getrunken hatten wurden wir mutiger und haben (Plastik)Likörflaschen jonglierend einen Videogruß zu unseren Lieben zu Hause geschickt.
Anschließend durften wir noch je 2 Liköre nach Wahl verkosten, bevor wir uns wieder — natürlich zu Fuß — auf den Weg gemacht haben.
Fazit — kein Muss, aber ein nettes Kann!

This place is awesome! We visited the House of Bols with one of our «Holland Passes,» which I highly recommend if you’re visiting Amsterdam. You start off the tour learning about the history of Bols, and how it came to be. Moving on are some really interactive exhibits that excite all of the senses. There are taste and smell exhibits, and a HUGE wall where you get to smell an enormous number of different flavors. After a few small rooms you head up to the top room where you’re able to customize your drink on a screen. The voucher also includes two shots of your choice. I should also mention that the place has a very modern and classy vibe, so you can take that in while you’re enjoying a fine, handcrafted cocktail. If the Heineken Experience is the Willy Wonka of Beer, this place is the Willy Wonka of hard alcohol.
