Café Bax is a very«locals» pub, but with a «huiskamer gevoel»(homley feel, but that doens’t quite translate as well…) It is located right near the Ten Kate Market, so you can also get your shopping on! On weekends they have had a flea market near the pub, that was also very cool, and they might do it again soon! the Pub, the interior is quite eclectic, from an Ikea table set, to the antique wallpaper, it is a very well decorated pub, and that gives it a nice and layed back atmosphere. there is a long wall sofa along one of the walls with relatively small tables to sit at, but very cozy for a chat over a few drinks. They also have some random tables to sit at, if you are not feeling the sofa. Or, you can hang out at the bar. They have free Wi-Fi, but a drink is mandatory, duh… the Terrace, this is my domain, as a smoker, I need these terraces like I need my sauv Blanc on a Friday evening. And this terrace is, dare I say it? Perfect! You can either hide from the elements under the heated canopy, or soak up the sun at one of the picnic tables. the Food, as it pains me to say, it used to be shit. But they have hired some new kitchen staff, and it has really been for the better!(not so much for the old kitchen staff though). Their sandwiches are great, the soups are mega tasty, and they also serve«bouncers» (uitsmijters) and other great and traditional Dutch café food. the Drink, They have a variety of special and seasonal beers on tap, and the staff is well informed about what they can offer you. If you are not too keen on a cold one, they also have some pretty decent wines(I am yet to convince the owner to get an acceptable dry white though), and a full bar. They also know how to do a flat white, or a cappuccino and have the oh so hip(barf) fresh mint tea. The staff, they rock! It can be a bit of a wait in the terrace during a lunch rush, but you can also order inside if you are feeling super thirsty, or oh so important that you just cannot wait… be sure to tip 20%, as all bar workers should be able to have something to show for after a 10 hour shift… The Music, no clue, because see the bit I wrote about theTerrace, sorry.

A nice chilled-out café around the corner of Kinkerstraat. I was here to satisfy my hunger after the long office hours. What else is better at these occasions than a burger? So I ordered the burger with a fried egg. The burger was served with french fries so my happiness was limitless. The burger was manly and had besides thick meat also delicious sauce and marinated onion rings between. I couldn’t even finish it! But what really stood out at this place was the service. Super friendly and helpful. The cheerful waiters came along several times to ask if everything is okay. That doesn’t happen too often in Amsterdam. Lastly, why I don’t give them 5 stars is the location. We were sitting outside(okay, they do have a big terrace) and it was rather noisy(street cleaning machines and cars and homeless people passing) so it wasn’t really cosy. The surroundings itself is not particularly aesthetic, however the food and service come very close to compensating it.

It’s what i would call a neighborhood pub. I was there for a weekly event held by friends i was visiting. They have«house» cat named clauss — very lazy and adorable fella. The menu is on a chalk board behind the bar — apparently there has been turn over in the kitchen so it can be hit for miss. The bar is usually rotating. We asked for a wheat and enjoyed the selection we received! The staff is definitely overworked… 1 maybe 2 servers working the whole place, including food ordering, beer, dish clearing and food delivering. It’s a lot of work for one guy. Note: they don’t take credit cards — they do take the local«pin» cards, so it’s fine for being a neighborhood bar, but not great for out of country visitors unless they bring cash. We chose the kip sate — it came with a slaw and some french fries(ask for fri sauce — aka mayo). It was tasty — y’know, chicken with peanut sauce. All in all, not a place i would choose to visit, but if my friends want to meet up there and enjoy and evening, i’ll go.

Now I wouldn’t go out of the way to come here but when in the neighborhood this is actually a wonderful spot to grab a drink with friends. If I did live in the ‘hood, this would probably be my local — I liked it that much! Free wifi. Great service. Just a really solid place for drinks, a bite and conversation.

Café Bax is the place for Appsterdammers to gather every Wednesday evening at 19:00. We’ve been coming to this café for the past two years and we absolutely love them! Their daily specials are delicious, and their kip sate is top! But what really makes this place the best, is owner Jasper Bax and his attentive staff. It’s rare to find good service in the Netherlands, and even rarer to find *great* service. I love you, Café Bax!
